Leyland

I agree with this 100%, but will point out "Leyland" is not really just one guy here...it's Smokes, Fat Ass Gene, Wimpy Jones, and 'Legendary' Lloyd.

It's odd to see a managers whole staff as disliked as himself by so many.

I would guess that if we went to board of other teams, if they were similar to this one, that unless they were in first place in their division, there is going to be just as much complaining about the managing staff.

Exactly. We watch this team play every single inning. We know every flaw inside and out. With other teams I basically know what I see on highlights. When the manager calls your number and guys perform then he looks good. When they fail then it looks like a bad decision. Leyland has flaws for sure...but half of this team is shit and has underperformed for over 80% of the year. We have too many bad players and no other options to replace them with.

Except our coaches and manager get bitched about even when we're several games in first.

We won 95 games last year, it didn't change anyone's mind about Lloyd or Lamont, they are just disliked.

Every manager has to play people that aren't performing from time to time. EVERY manager. If you want to believe it or not, it happens.....even to the legends. It's not completely on Leyland. The front office of every team has a huge say on the 25 man roster.

As far as the line-ups go. I don't blame him for giving Young a long look in the 5 spot. Young didn't perform.....but who would you have put there??? Boesch....nope. Avila......nope. Jhonny......LOL??? Santiago? Laird? Worth? Inge? Kelley? WHO? What were Leyland's other options this year????

The same thing goes for 6th....7th.....8th and 9th too. It's a complete disaster from 5 down. Has been all year!!

I didn't say it was completely on Leyland...read my posts. All i said was, i think Leyland is a joke. And he is...end of story.

But you have to criticize these guys. They DON'T desrve a pass at all.

For instance...

Where was Lloyd when they faced that kid yesterday who couldn't find the fn strike zone to save his life? Yet, there are guys up there hacking away at the first pitch? That's absolutely pathetic, no?

I wasn't arguing the reasoning behind the dislike...

Just that it's the whole staff, and they have all basically been disliked since they got here.

With the exception of Jones, who got his job when Leyland threw Knapp under the bus. He was probably still pissed he had to fire Chucky.

Leyland was an ass throwing Knapp under the bus.

Lloyd i'm on the fence with. I just don't get what he does during games. You NEVER see him talking to a guy after a bad at bat or anything. Maybe i'm missing it...idk. I see other batting coaches talking to their guys when i watch a late game or a game during a Tigers day off..it's baffling.

That whole thing with Knapp was weird... It still does not feel right.... But we did take off after the firing...But maybe we would have anyway... I have heard Knapp a few times on a radio show and he was miffed by the whole thing and i think from his tone was still really pissed off by it.. I guess I do not blame him..

Delmon batting 5th and Valverde in non save situations alone are two big ass screw up's with Leyland. He can only do so much in certain situations but those are bad.

Edit: And yeah, Avila or Peralta would have been better at 5.

I'll bet that Bobby Valentine makes good in-game decisions.....there is more to being a good manager than making line-ups and pitching changes!

Figure that one out all by yourself?

Just trying to make it clear to some of the Leyland bashers....putting a .263 hitter in the 5 hole vs. a .268 hitter or how you handle the bull pen doesn't make you a good or bad manager....that part of managing a ball club is a small fraction of a manager's responsibilites.

True and Leyland can't do any of it.

Boom.

Now maybe but after last season, the ones particular by Avila and Peralta they should have been no brainer's to bat 5.

And maybe those guys hit better with guys on base all the time. Just with Avila's ability to draw a walk he should have been 5 in April.

And when your closer has the ability to completely suck in non-save situations he shouldn't be put in game.

Leyland has done a great job in Detroit. And sure he makes mistakes sometimes, but thats the minority of the time. We have been contenders year in, year out for a few years now even with a team that is so diverse in talent (handful of players are all-pro while the rest of the team is average). If Leyland was so bad we would be worse than the Indians, but were not.

Think about the players outside of Verlander, Fielder, Jackson, and Miggy. Its a crapshoot every time any of those other hitters/pitchers are in the game. We don't have defense, our bullpen is very erratic, our lineup has many holes in it, we don't have speed on the basepaths, and our rotation is iffy.

Leyland does his best to get enough out of the rest of the team to create wins. And thats what the other managers see when they voted him the best manager in baseball. And very every hater of Leyland, think about that those managers voted him in. So if you don't like Leyland the best manager in baseball, then I guess your fucked.

+1

(I don't think he is the BEST in baseball, but he is in the top 5 IMO)

If the technology was the the same and we were able to watch every game the same people would have said the same thing about Sparky. No one bothers to look at the other managers out there. One of the biggest complaints about Leyland is his lineups. Well Maddon has more lineup changes than anyone and is considered one of the best managers out there. Leylands moves or lack of moves piss me off sometimes as well but to call him an awful manager is an opinion, and everyone's entitled one I know, but too much negative energy is spent on this topic. If the Tigers were to win the World Series it would take away from their enjoyment because they would think it was in spite of Leyland.
