Lions hire Darrell Bevell as OC

Former NFL quarterback says Darrell Bevell often called the ?perfect play?.
Players that have worked under Darrell Bevell had nice things to say about the Lions? new offensive coordinator.

It?s now been over 24 hours since the Detroit Lions named former Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell as their next play-caller on offense. In the mad scramble for information, we asked our friends at Seahawks blog Field Gulls what they think, we?ve investigated Bevell based on his quotes from the past 10 years, and we?ve looked at his statistics and made our own analysis.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press took things one step further by talking to some former NFL players that played under Bevell. Speaking to quarterbacks Sage Rosenfels (worked under Bevell in 2009 with the Vikings) and Tarvaris Jackson (2006-10 with the Vikings; 2011, 2013-15 with the Seahawks), Birkett got a unique look at the Lions? new offensive coordinator by some of the players that know him most.

?He?s going to be very quarterback friendly,? Jackson said. ?Whatever you?re comfortable with, he?s going to make sure you get.?

That?s sure to be good news for Matthew Stafford, who just lost Jim Bob Cooter?a coach Stafford has constantly backed and trusted.

But while we?ve heard plenty about Bevell?s scheme and affinity to run, we?ve heard very little about his ability to call plays... well, except for that one play. However, Rosenfels remembers Bevell often coming up with the exact right call for the situation.

|I felt like when Bevell was calling plays that year and it would come through my headset, I was like, ?Oh, that?s the perfect call,?? Rosenfels said. |I remember many, many times that year thinking that, that he found that play on his call sheet and it jumped out at me that it was sort of the perfect play to call in that situation.?

Hopefully this means an improved run game and more focus on running the ball.

This is exactly what it means. Bevel is a run first guy. Run to death then hammer them with the play action. Take deep shots, move the chains.
Quinn from day 1 has come in here and told the world that he wants to run the football. He's drafted OL early, picked up OL in FA. He traded up to get KJ, picked up Blount. It's no secret what he wants to do.

That's great. While the NFL opens up, spreads the ball out, creates rules that are more favorable for the QB/WR, and otherwise encourages and even wants teams to throw the ball, let's go back to 1995. Not to mention, WITH a quarterback that is much better when he's allowed to be a play maker.

See anything wrong here??

Bevell had Russell wilson and his passing game was below top 25 in like 5 of 6 years. And alot of that passing scheme was roll outs and creativity after the play breaks down....2 things Stafford sucks at. It'll be interesting If bevell is a real coordinator and creates an offense based on staffords strengths or tries to shove a square peg into a round hole.

I see nothing wrong here. Quit your fucking crying. It's tiresome. Bevel likes to run the ball but that doesn't mean he's a throwback. He wants a balanced offense but with emphasis on the run. "Ball control" football. Quinn has been building for this since day 1. Try looking up Bevel's offensive philosophy before running your mouth.

He wants to run the football and work off play action. It will be successful as long as our RBs stay healthy. Wilson had stud RBs his whole career.
If they want to mimick Seattle. Build that defense and get some RBs to help out your QB.

On the podcast, I think Jerry brought up a good question in regards to Bevell and the run first mentality.

Were Bevell's offenses more run-heavy because of his offensive philosophy or because he had Marshawn Lynch and Adrian Peterson to work with?

Kerryon is obviously not at that level (yet), so I think it's a bit early to declare what this offense is going to look like.

Here are Wilson's RBs over the past 3 seasons

Christine Michael
Thomas Rawls
Mike Davis
Chris Carson
Rashaad Penny

I don't see any studs.

Well except the final two years under Bevell.

Seattle 2017
RBs - 301 Carries 994 yards, 3.3 YPC

Seattle 2016
RBs - 310 Carries 1184 yards, 3.8 YPC

For reference:
Detroit 2018
RBs - 369 Carries 1496 yards, 4.1 YPC

Detroit 2017
RBs - 325 Carries 1073 Yards, 3.3 YPC

Detroit 2016
RBs - 301 Carries 1095 Yards, 3.6 YPC

Also for the record in 2018 not including Blount who shouldn't be here
Detroit lions RBs went for 1077 yards on 214 carries (5.0 YPC).

So hopefully we stay healthy and our run game under Bevell can match what JBC was getting his final year with the current RBs less Blount. :)

And that style of "control the clock, run the ball is antiquated. I will hold out judgement of course when the season actually starts, but I want this team to be creative, ESPECIALLY with a QB who is clearly not comfortable being that "ball-control guy." Stafford is at his best when he can spread it out and sling the ball. Controlling the clock is the most overrated stat in the history of sports.

And that may not be Bevell's fault. It looks more and more like the Lions entire front office has this standard, "establish the run, control the clock" mentality that does not fly in the NFL anymore. That's not an opinion, that's the way the league is.

Its all good...were just paying Matt Stafford 137 million to be Joe Flacco. No big deal....totally smart.

That's because you don't watch football very much. Thanks for posting the #1 rushing attack this yr lol. Carson, Penny and even Davis were studs this yr.
Good job leaving Lynch off that list too lol. Wilson has had it easy back there for the majority of his career. You can't argue it...

It is your opinion tho lol. Look at the 4 teams left in the playoffs. They all run the ball exceptionally well. That means a ton down the stretch.
Bevel isn't just all about the run either. He comes from a passing background, he was a QB, a QBs coach and a passing specialist. Stafford should do some nice things in this offense if they do it right.
