Lions hire Rod Wood as President

Ford family confident,no experience in football. Will run the finances of the team, and probably will help pick a GM.

Feels like a typical Lions hire. Would have liked someone running the Lions who, you know, had some experience running and NFL team before. But as long as he's strictly a financial guy it might not be a disaster.

They are using the Advisory Panel to help pick the GM. Polian, Wolf, Accorsi, those guys will be involved

Is he going to handle the cap stuff too? If so, getting a league guy might have been smart since that stuff can get pretty complicated.

Basically, he takes over for Lewand. He's the money guy, but no, he won't handle the cap.

He's going to handle the "non-football" side of the Lions business. If a kids charity needs a donation, he's your guy. If the Lions need to remodel part of the stadium, he's your guy. If the team need a new plane for travel, he's your guy.

Need to know how a top quality free agent will fit in to your long term cap budget? He's going to help hire your guy.

"It’s unclear if Wood, who was chief executive of Ford Estates the past eight years, will have any role in personnel decisions or managing the salary cap. This will be his first job in the NFL."

There is no team president or GM in the NFL who actually "manages" the salary cap. There are quite a few who manage a team of lawyers and accountants that manage the salary cap.

It's simply too big for any one person to know all the rules, gotchas, and loopholes.

Did a quick search of 3 randomly picked NFL teams. The Bears President was with the team for 16 years before being named president. He negotiates player contracts as part of his job.

The Seahawks president ran 2 other pro sports teams including the St Louis Blues before joining the Seahawks.l as president

The Falcons president was an NFL player and was a GM for 16 years before being president of them.

Hey, our guy ran Ford Estates though. Pathetic.

I don't care which President or GM says he negotiates the deals, that's not how it works in the real world.

In truth, 99% of all these kind of negotiations are done between team lawyer and player agent. Back and forth they go, with the salary cap experts chiming in to say "No, we can't actually give him use of the private plane every third day, because we have to account for the miles and charge the average to his cap number as a bonus, which puts us over the line".

When they have agreed to all the numbers, the team President or GM (depending) will have to sign off on it, but there was a team of about 20 guys that put the ink to paper to get it done.

I've never worked for the NFL, but I've been in enough of those corporate negotiations with multiple companies to know it's not the old days when the owner said "Hey, how about we pay you this much" and he and the player shook on it and had a beer while one lawyer did up the contract.

dude ran ford estates....ofcourse he can run a football team. riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggghhhhtttt.....

fuckin lions lol.

They are using the panel to find a gm. Wolf accorsi and polian will recommend a good gm. It's about the gm. We will see tomorrow if this guy will handle contracts or not. He is smarter than Leyand and more successful. He worked at other places than ford estates

Well there goes the dream of cleaning house. Bring in a guy that has spent more time there than Caldwell has. I wouldn't be shocked if they just keep White as GM and Caldwell as coach.

That's what's about to happen. Especially if the Lions win a few more games. This is the Lions.

Dumb move... As usual. Clearly a hobby for the owner. Ford Motor Co is priority, Lions is something to do on Sundays.

New Lions president Wood: 'I'm not a football guy'

Sounds like a great guy to run your football team, I just hope we can score enough runs to win more matches the next tour.
