The thing about fumbles is that our leading rusher, recent free agent has a fumbling problem and has most of his career. How does that change..? You can't cut him, it's been happening since he got to the NFL. You just have to take his 4-5 fumbles a year and move on..

Cut it by 1 from Bush could matter for an extra win or loss though. 3 lost instead of 4. Acutally if you look at Bush, 4 lost fumbles is the most of his entire career. 2 lost each year in Miami on 200 carries. The luck of the Lions get him to lose almost every fumble that hit the turf. In Miami, had 4 each year but only lost 2 each year. Bounce of the ball.

Bell 2 fumbles in a blizzard. Can you cut those out. Stafford/Raiola blizzard fumble. The fumble by Sam Martin on a fake FG. Surely you can cut that down. The Durham crazy fumble? Just get Durham off the field. Pettigrew had one week 1 and we though, here we go again but then he didn't lose another.

You'll never cut it to zero but you can cut them down by 5(10 fumbles) and be on the right side of 3 close games.

Why would he cut it by one? He had what, 1100 or so rush attempts in his career and 26 fumbles. That's just him, it's not bad luck or circumstances it's the fact he can't hold on to the ball, never has been. This is not one bad year or off year it's just what he does.

And 4 is not most, last 3 years 4 twice, 5 once - and 7 in an earlier year. That's consistent.

Fumbles lost is all that matters though. He had 5 hit the turf and lost 4. Really 6 though as they count the Arizona game fumble to Stafford. He'll probably but 4-5 on the turf but that doesn't mean the Lions will lose 4 or 5 fumbles. Like I said, I'll be happy if we lose only 3 next year if he puts 5 on the ground. 60% loss rate is normal luck.

10 fumbles lost and like 16 picks from Stafford. Lions would be golden with only 26 turnovers allowed with how well they move the ball and make stops.

We were not lucky. 80% loss rate is not lucky. 75% for Bell.

Stafford's fumbles on snaps in the blizzard make the recovery rate look better than it actually was.

When the ball was in play and the Lions fumbled, 80% of the time they didn't get it back. Terrible luck.

Plus they had less than a 50% recovery rate when they forced a fumble on defense.

Detroit forced 14 only got 7. Bad luck again.

That 8 fumble swing can cause 3 extra losses.

We were lucky in 2011. 17 forced in 2011, recovered 13. So yes 3 more forced in 2011 compared to 2013. 76% recovery rate compared to 50%


12 forced against us in 2011, only lost 7. And 6 less put on the turf in 2011 compared to 2013. 58% loss rate compared to 83%


But much better recovery rates in 2011 on both sides.

I think the hires of Caldwell and Lombardi bode well for Stafford since I think Linehan didn't really force him to focus on fundamentals. IF (the key word) IF we get a truly focused Stafford like we had in 2011 (even though he had some knucklehead plays then too) this is a team that is a real playoff team. Take away the dumb stuff from this offense, like being to conservative with a lead, throwing off his back foot and fumbles then this team may have something. The defense showed it had real potential especially if we stop being so predictable and can add another playmaker either at OLB or Corner. I think this could be an 11 win team. But they need to clean up the mental part of it. Fumbles, drops and interceptions are mostly mental.
