Lions working out Champ Bailey

I'm kind of surprised no one has tried doing the standard thing and try converting Bailey into a safety. guess he doesn't want to go that direction to prolong his career.

I honestly like that they are bringing him in even if it is to provide veteran depth. if they can pay him vet minimum, not a bad deal if he can help coach up the other guys.

That's what we have a secondary coach, a defensive coordinator and a head coach for. The saints kept undrafted rookie Brian Dixon over Champ.

Says a lot.

He got a 2 year deal in NO.....but was cut in the preseason. He AGAIN has the option to pick his team and he's working out for the Lions....who aren't really even trying to sign him??

That tells me he has FEW to no other options. That means he has little left in terms of talent.

Pass.

He was hurt last year. Foot/plantar problem ...idk. He's apparantley over it now. Kick the tires on him and see what he's got. It doesn't hurt to try...

Exactly tony...nothing to lose by giving him a chance. Worst case scenario, he doesn't work out and the Lions cut him. Happens all the time. But if he proves to be better than an existing option, then adding him is an upgrade...albeit one that other teams released, but any improvement is better than none.

IMO this shows me that the Lions secondary is going to be a problem again this year.

This shows me that the Lions know the Lions secondary is going to be a problem this year.

So they know they need help but they'll wait til next week to save a couple pennies and give other teams the chance to pick up the guys they are interested in. Brilliant!

Digest these salary cap numbers for a moment:

Suh: http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/detroit-lions - $22,412,500

Seahawks entire secondary: http://overthecap.com/positional-spending - S: $16,088,511 CB: $6,025,173

So Suh costs more than the entire Seahawks secondary this year. It's a damn good thing we have Suh, eh?!?!?

Hey, I know!!! LKP will come on and correct these numbers and show me the truth!!!! I must have gone to a bad website for that data or something, right? Right??? PLEASE TELL ME I WENT TO A BAD WEBSITE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I said it last year. I still say it. He isnt worth the cap hit.....even the new deal he'll eventually sign. As you pointed out, in the NFL....it seems that the formula for success is pay your QB, draft well, and trade your young talent before their megadeals for more draft picks.

Detroit should have traded Suh before the draft. It's hard to see him signing here next year. Hope he does.....but I doubt it.

That CB number's gonna go WAY up next year.

WAY up.

Totally agree. I hope Ebron turns into a great player for us. And he might. But the BPA strategy is a lot less effective when it's not 2009 and your roster represents a standard issue dumpster fire. There are far less holes now than there were then.

The why your team sucks thing was really funny, but also kinda true. "The Lions draft strategy is that they are one offensive weapon away from the Super Bowl." I don't understand it.

I started in Mayhew's corner and argued with hughes about it. If this team doesn't achieve this year. He's got to go. He's decent at FA and trade acquisitions, but he can't draft.at.all.

If the plan is to keep Suh long term, I have zero issue with how they are going about things. To keep deferring and deferring this money just delays the inevitable. The Lions were very much a victim of the old rookie structure. Calvin, Stafford and Suh were all top 2 picks and got HUGE money. That is no one's fault.

If, however, they end up letting him walk for nothing, then this is the most horribly mismanaged contract I can remember. He should have been traded or cut this year and then you concentrate on Fairley, Who knows, if he knew he was going to be the man he'd stop smoking, stop eating, and stop getting into trouble.

key to success is finding a good (not great) young qb that's cheap and winning before he gets his new deal. SF and SEA will be ruined after their young productive qbs make their new money. If youre forced to pay a qb matt Stafford money you better hope he plays like peyton manning...not like Brandon weeden.

SEA is a different animal all together. Sepifically in their secondary which is ALLLL mid round picks. They changed the game with the height/length they have in their secondary. Even that doesn't work out if they didn't have the pass rush they have. Throw in the fact their mid round lbs that play like super bowl mvps. Yaaa...not going to expect mayhew to ever draft like that. So the best thing we can hope for in the future is to spread the money around a bit more because as ive stated several times....calvin is the only mega star worth his money.

Id agree with you about the trade thing if this was 2011.....Houston/sims....he made some decent deals getting talent here for cheap. But he hasn't done that in years. FA has been better the last couple years. Bush and Tate should help redefine this offense. Quin was a good signing but we will never see his potential because we surround him with crap.

You figured that out all by yourself or what? Genius. It is what is. Bring him in and kick the tires....they did that.....he supposedly looked good. He'll be a Lion by Tuesday.
