Did The Tigers Make The Right Choice At 1-1?
MLBTR

The Tigers made what most have deemed the right call in selecting Arizona State slugger Spencer Torkelson with the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft. However, the team caught many off-guard when commissioner Rob Manfred announced Torkelson, a college first baseman/outfielder, as a third baseman. Even Torkelson didn’t see it coming. “The first time I knew they were drafting me as a third baseman was when the commissioner said, ‘Spencer Torkelson, third base,'” he revealed Thursday. But Torkelson’s a former high school third baseman who has taken reps at third at ASU, so the position’s not foreign to him. Even if he’s unable to stick at the hot corner as a professional, the Tigers are confident the big hitter will make a significant impact at either first or in the outfield.

3 college bats that were all best available when they were picked. I like this way of picking.

77. Gage Workman (3B, Arizona State Univ. | Video)
Workman has a chance to be an impact defender at third and some feel he deserves a chance to hold down the six spot at the pro ranks, thanks to his plus-or-better arm, solid hands and above-average range. At the plate, Workman can put a charge into the ball and has 30 home run upside, but there is a fair amount of swing-and-miss to his game and there are concerns as to whether or not the big raw power makes it to 7pm at the highest levels. He profiles as a second or third round dev play.

Wierd note, the tigers drafted Arizona State's current 3rd basemen, their incoming freshman 3rd basemen and their current 1st baseman who they plan on playing at, you guessed it, 3rd base.

Workman’s needs to cut his k’s down if that is even possible with the Tigers coaching staff sadly. 138 K’d and only 48 walks in college. Not sure about picking this guy for 3rd base when they want Spencer to play there.

His first Cape Cod season was terrible ( his first with wood). He improved in his second season with wood. Like his size 6’4 195 and only 20 years old. He k’d 72 times and walked only 19 in his 2 Cod seasons. Like switch hitters !

So are we happy if 2 of the 5 stick or do we have to hit at a better rate ? Baseball is so hard. Tigers get hurt by only having 5 rounds. Does this mean they can sign other guys ?

At least they took a bunch of sticks instead of arms. This team could really use a uptick in power hitters ! Or maybe some gap to gap hitters to take advantage of Comerica s big outfield.

BYBTB Podcast 78: Draft aftermath with Vinnie Cervino and Brian Sakowski of Perfect Game. 44 minutes.
That feels like quite a draft for our Detroit Tigers.

Well, that was something! The Detroit Tigers, the team we know and love so well, had quite a fairly fascinating night for themselves on day two of the draft. Somehow, they took not one pitcher, spent a high pick on a catcher, and still managed to procure a nice array of players without reaching an inch. Instead, Al Avila and company just lay in the cut while interesting players dropped into their laps over and over.

Vinnie Cervino and Brian Sakowski, the top evaluators for Perfect Game USA, were gracious enough to join hosts Brandon Day of the BYB Podcast, and Mark Gorosh of the Don?t Call it a Rebuild, it?s a Team Build Podcast, for another podcast summit, recorded as the fifth and final round wound down.

Together, as our two intrepid guests covered the final picks, (you?re going to hear some rustling and typing in the background, sorry), we reflected on the overall picture from the past two days. In particular, we were broke down a wild day for the Tigers, and our generally positive impressions of the results.

1. IF Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State)

38. C Dillon Dingler (Ohio State)

62. OF Daniel Cabrera (LSU)

73. IF Trei Cruz (Rice)

102. IF Gage Workman (Arizona State)

132. IF Colt Keith (Biloxi HS)

They can sign as many as they want, but the most that any team can give is a $20K. My guess is the only players that will be signing are college seniors that have no eligibility left. Since the players that weren't drafted are essentially free agents, I don't know if the Tigers are in a good position or bad. On one hand, the path to the big leagues may be easier since they have virtually nobody in the big leagues that has any talent at all. On the other hand, do you want to play for a dis-functional organization that has a history of not developing talent. My guess is it's the latter...the best undrafted talent will sign with the better organizations.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29300041/best-players-not-taken-abbreviated-2020-mlb-draft

Here is an article listing the best available talent. Notice all of them are HS players. My guess is none of them sign with teams and they all go to college. Under normal circumstances, unless they have all made it clear that they want to go to college, these guys would have been drafted in rounds 5-9. Last year, the players that the Tigers signed in rounds 5-9 range between $182K - $398,000. Those players missed out on a lot of potential money.
