Why is this so hard for him?
He needs to call a press conference and address the Walton, and Appling/Payne situation now, so it stops being a distraction: what he knew, and what he did about it.
it sounds like this all went down within a 1yr period beginning August 2010. I forget was the 2010 season critical for him? was he on the hot seat or something?
At least he can try to spin it as a bad period, and a couple bad apples on his team, and a learning experience for him as to recruiting better character or something. Appling is obviously just a "bad apple" as he's shown since then.
I guess if anyone asks him "What about Draymond then?" he can say "He was good when he was here. I never coached him to punch guys in the balls, okay? that was the next guy."

You implied none of the post was a fact yet are now backpedalling and saying my hypothetical situation isn't a fact - well, that's brilliant - hypotheticals aren't factual. Although in this case it's a near certainty that MC would do exactly what I said.

No, but the pressure could be signficant, especially if the BOT continues to thumb their nose at the faculty, and important or well-regarded faculty start leaving.
Look at the r?sum?s of the BOT members... going by credentials, all these doofuses are easily replaceable.

Address the Appling and Payne situation? This was addressed by the Ingham county prosecutor, Title IX office, and the office of civil rights when all of them exonerated Appling and Payne. Why would Izzo have to address that? Just to say that he abides by the findings of 3 independent departments 8 years ago?
As for Walton, I'm sure he will address that, he did say after each game that there will be a time when he talks about it but he won't during an investigation. I'm sure they're looking into each claim more closely to make sure there are no surprises, also, it wouldn't be a surprise if maybe there are more accusations since the OTL report that they need to look into.
Even though Izzo didn't say anything about the Walton battery case, the former assistant city attorney in East Lansing did have some things to say this weekend

I am submitting this statement to clarify and respond to the false allegations and misleading insinuations that were made relating to my role as the Asst. City Attorney for East Lansing as it relates to a 2010 criminal prosecution of Travis Walton. I have not been privy to any reports on this matter since 2010 and the statements made herein are only those which I know to be accurate, as opposed to putting forth anything based upon speculation and assumptions.
?I had always been of the mindset that my position was in service to the public and warranted transparency, so when Paula Lavigne of ESPN contacted me last year, I spoke to her about what I could recall from a case which was resolved almost 8 years prior.
?I can affirm that I did review the initial report, took the allegations of the accusing witness seriously and recommended criminal assault charges be issued. The defense counsel did produce at least two independent witness statements that directly contradicted the allegations made by the accuser; however at this time, I do not recall the exact details of those statements. I do not recall any other evidence other than witness statements.
?The case was fully reviewed and a determination was made that while the case wouldn?t be fully dismissed, a plea offer would be made. Unlike a county prosecutor, city attorneys can only charge 90 day misdemeanors which are the lowest level charge that are still criminal, and due to that, most pleas offers result in some type of civil infraction, typically a litter.
?I can affirm that the plea offer was approved by my supervising attorney and was within our normal guidelines. The actual plea offer, similar to many offered in thousands of cases I was involved with, was to reduce the criminal charge to a civil infraction with a condition that the defendant not be charged with any new charges for a subsequent 6 month period. The offer was accepted by the defendant.
?If I had not taken the accuser and her accusations seriously, I would not have recommended the original charges at the outset and subsequently, I would have just dismissed the charges without mandating some type of plea agreement. Any decision made on this case, and all the cases I was involved with, were made based upon the legalities of the case and that is it. Despite that, these were difficult decisions and I was fully aware that the decisions made by the City Attorney?s office affected both sides.
?At no point in my role as Asst. City Attorney did Travis Walton or any other person receive preferential treatment from me as to their criminal proceedings. East Lansing City prosecutions had previously been cleared of preferential treatment in a 2015 article by ESPN and Ms. Levine [sic].
?At no point in my career have I ever spoken to administration from MSU, Tom Izzo, Mark Dantonio, or their staff regarding any of the criminal cases which I prosecuted. In fact, at no point in my life have I spoken to Tom Izzo or Mark Dantonio.

There are inconsistencies in both stories, the woman admitted to lunging at Walton and telling him to F off, but I'm sure Walton was at fault for instigating this and likely shoved here, her injuries were consistent with falling off of a barstool but not of getting punched in the face by a man who benched almost 500lbs. Again, I'm sure Walton did something wrong here, he started it, it escalated, bad situation.
My question to you is what was Izzo supposed to do? he let the legal process play out and didn't interfere. There were conflicting reports and it was plead down to a litter which is common with assault charges in EL, not just for athletes, paid a $500 fine and went on with his life.
And once again, this is all about a"volunteer student manager, not a player or someone drawing a paycheck. The judge said that he could travel with the team.
I'm not trying to minimize the charges and I do not claim to know exactly what happened. But I do not understand what IZZO was supposed to do differently than letting the legal process play out and take their word on the outcome

Well, not a perfect equivalent, but let's look at the Grant Perry incident. Harbaugh immediately suspended him from all team activities pending the investigation. Perry missed the bowl trip, the Italy trip, and regular season games, then was reinstated after the legal process had reached its conclusion. That could've been how Izzo handled it, but no, he kept Walton on full go...
