MSU pres. Resigns

I'm absolutely baffled by the timeline with Walton. He was sitting on Izzo's bench in a suit and tie. We are to believe that he wasn't coaching in any way, shape or form? He was just a civilian dressed to the nines helping to be nice?

Did all of this stuff happen AFTER his duties on the bench? I honestly am asking truthfully. Because in his statement, he said "I was never hired or fired by MSU in any way." I just find that absolutely hard to believe. Maybe he wasn't PAID, but he was on that bench coaching.

As I said in my previous post - he was basically a student manager - he was still finishing his undergrad degree so he wasn't a grad assistant or in a paid position. I knew a guy who had the same position under Jud when I was at MSU. He was an unathletic, chubby dork that was in some of my accounting classes. It was a volunteer, unpaid position (there are usually a couple, maybe 3 of them) but he got to put on a suit and sit at the end of the bench during games doing menial tasks like moving chairs for TOs, tracking stats, handing out towels/water, etc - I believe but don't recall for sure that he travelled with the team too and did other menial work at practice. Walton is probably a little different since he played for 4 years and was able to contribute more than the fat kid from my accounting class but that is basically the position he held. Why they wear a suit for that job is anybody's guess but they do.

As for the timeline, I'm not sure. I believe both incidents occurred during that time - I'm not clear on the reporting of the bar incident but I think sbee or johnny2x2x talked about the timeline around that here or on the MSU board. My understanding of the sexual assault was that even Walton didn't know of that until recently and the reason he left was he had finished his degree and went to play professional ball in Europe. There's currently no evidence he fled to avoid any scandal or that Izzo or anyone else knew about the alleged sexual assault. Does anyone seriously think if he was under investigation he'd be allowed to leave the country and if he did and was a fugitive that this is the first time anyone would be hearing about it?

again, just come out and admit you're okay with MSU administration covering for guys who rape and beat women in bars, instead of arguing all this bullshit.

we get it. you want your team to win basketball games. whatever they do off the court doesn't matter.

I love the victim blaming with Walton. Stirred to perfection.

The victim isn't credible. Good fucking god. I'm sure she got a concussion from Walton littering. There are two separate hospital reports that shows Walton gave her a concussion, plus a bar full of witnesses.

Go fuck yourself with your retarded victim blaming.

Boom, walton is a rapist and Izzo covered for him.

He was a student manager. He wasn't even a grad assistant because he was still finishing his undergrad degree. He was unpaid, never hired or fired and his bio on the school site never indicated he was a coach of any kind.

You're missing the point, he wore a suit! That means that Izzo is the devil, he condones rape in and beating women, just like Lauren Allswede said

Facts have always been a pesky little inconvenience that you have to ignore while making wildly absurd accusations to "win" an argument, haven't they? I guess it comes with the territory in your profession, particularly among the childish hacks like yourself who pick a side based on jersey colors or political affiliation and make snap judgements before the evidence is known.

Do you have any evidence that no one else has including ESPN that indicates Izzo knew about any or all of this and is just hoping it all blows over? Of course not, it's just much easier to make even more absurd accusations and impugn someone's character to get a pat on the back from bob and hungry and probably make your miserable self feel better.

from court yesterday:
Randall Margraves [father of three daughters assaulted by Nassar] asked the judge, as part of her sentencing, to give him five minutes alone with Nassar. When the judge said she couldn?t do that, he then asked for one minute. When she said no again, he rushed at the defendant?s table, but was quickly subdued by bailiffs.

this is great spin... yes, the important thing here is whether or not a grad assistant is technically part of the coaching staff. if not, he might as well be a random guy on the street.

They should have let him beat him senseless. I know they technically can't, but it would be a lot cooler if they did.

Maybe it's just me, and that's fine. But I don't really care if he's a water boy, student assistant, or head coach. That means that person works for the university and the team, paid or unpaid. We are getting WAY too technical about who is or isn't an employee for the purposes of covering Izzo's ass. He's on that bench in a suit yelling instructors, getting water, or patting guys on the back, he works for that team. That chubby guy you described, he worked for the team.

I'm not blaming the victim for anything, and I'm not saying Walton didn't hit her. I'm just saying there are conflicting stories and yes, the accuser is a bit of a nut job. She's been ranting online about how Izzo runs East Lansing and the school, the cops, the bar and everyone else are conspiring against her because of him. That's a bit over the top.

All we know for sure about this case was she had witnesses who said he punched and he had witnesses who said he didn't and it was pleaded down. I've never said Walton was innocent because I don't know. Her claim is that Walton punched her in the face because she told him to leave seems a bit unlikely. Maybe Walton was drunk and he hit her and maybe she was drunk and tried to hit him and injured herself falling off her bar stool. If you think that sounds outrageous, go ask any emergency room doctor, particularly on a college campus how often they see drunk people who injured themselves in a year. My college roommate got a concussion when he fell trying to get out the loft - oddly enough, he was going to fight another one of our roommates (he thought he was anyway). that was a fun night. Anyway, I highly doubt the hospital reports say Walton gave her a concussion. They may have said she had a concussion but it would be pretty irresponsible of them to say Walton gave it to her if they weren't there to witness it - good spin though.

Again, I'm not saying Walton is innocent and I'm not saying he's guilty. I wasn't there and I don't know - there are plausible conflicting stories. What I am saying is there's no evidence Izzo did anything to cover up or influence the investigation in any way. And there's also no evidence he knew anything about the alleged sexual assault accusation involving Walton either.

Everything else aside it would have made zero sense for Izzo to cover for Walton even if he had any kind of knowledge at all about any incidents. There was nothing to be gained. His eligibility was over as a player and he wasn't even technically on the coaching staff. Just a guy getting a little introduction to the world of coaching while he finished his degree. Certainly a little bad publicity perhaps if any of it happened the way some alleged and it comes out, but again I doubt worth covering anything up to avoid it.

You are usually spot on with posts, but I have to fully disagree with you. Coaches will always think the best of their players, from start to finish. They become like father figures for these athletes, and will always give them the benefit of the doubt, no matter what.

They stand behind their players until they can stand behind them no longer.

In fact, I'd be more surprised if Walton did something, it was confirmed and went to trial, and Izzo DIDN'T stand up for him. That would surprise me.

I think there's a distinction between a volunteer position with little or no responsibility and a paid position. Even if there's not, I also think you have to look at this in the context of what was known at the time. Nassar wasn't on the radar, it was a case of a he-said-she-said. How much of a failure is it on Izzo's part to wait until the investigation is complete to take action? should he have suspended him? Even if it's a definite yes, is something he should lose his career over?

If it comes out that he knew more about that and was aware of the sexual assault allegation and still did nothing, then that's a different story. But given what we know now, the worst you can say he should have suspended Walton - given the way it was resolved with no charges other than littering, would Izzo have been wrong to reinstate him in his volunteer postion?

I'd rant online if someone assaulted me and it was buried for a fucking decade.

I saw her posts in the responses to the ESPN article hungry posted yesterday.

they didn't seem like "rants" to me. she seemed pretty calm and straightforward in her statements.

Yeah, I've read through the posts. Nothing about what she said seemed ranty at all.

Even if they were ranty, she has every right.

I can't imagine how much anger and frustration she went through when that was swept under the rug.

Buried? It's easy to get court records, I guess MSU didn't issue a press release about it but it's hard to say it was buried.

There are conflicting accounts of the incident, my guess is that Walton approached the woman, got rebuffed, then started acting like an asshole, she upped the ante, told him (in her words) "not so politely to F off," Walton said she threw a drink, etc. There were witnesses that had very different accounts of the incident.

Did Izzo really stand up for him? The incident was handled through the legal process, Izzo wasn't involved, attorneys plead it down to littering, not Izzo. He did allow him to travel with the team while it was pending, I don't think that's worth condemning someone, not that big of a deal.
