Next Lions Coach

I don't think we could get Dungy, but I would love him.

I heard Dungy say on TV he has no interest in coaching again. If I were the Lions, I would go after John Gruden.

They all say that and it may be true but it may not. They can't exactly come out and say they want to leave their current job, like anyone else. Dungy isn't as involved in TV as Gruden who has the prime Monday Night gig. Dungy set up the Bucs to win and has won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning and should be able to help coach up Stafford. He brings instant respect as well. The Dungy family lived for years in Amherstburg Ontario, literally a half hour from Ford Field.

It was weird how Gruden was kind of acting like a homer when he called the Monday night lions game....like he had a betting interest....or a coaching interest. Other than that weird behavior all sign point to gruden staying in the booth as well.

I keep hearing reports that weve contacted whisenhunts agent. Hes my Dark horse.....not a HUGE name but I think hed do well here and would be an upgrade over Shorts.

My favorite has been Obrien....if the report is true /drool. Not a retread and known to be an offensive mind that gets QBs to perform. Notice I didn't say QB friendly.....he gives tough love (see the tom brady sideline rant) and to be honest I think that's what staff needs.....hes been coddled way too much by this organization and hes regressed because of it.

god I wish someone would do that to staff.....instead we cut to the sidelines to see linehan and staff looking at pictures he obviously never learns anything from.

The pictures are in crayon, its what Linehan's kids drew the other day at school.

Competition on the O'Brian front.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Penn State coach Bill O'Brien is "high" on the Texans' wish list, and that the sides are planning to meet in the near future.
ESPN's Adam Caplan confirms that Houston has been "doing work on" O'Brien this week. It's a bit of a surprise, as NFL head-coaching experience is believed to be near the top of owner Bob McNair's list of criteria, but O'Brien has proven his bonafides as an NFL coordinator and college head coach. At the very least, O'Brien is going to get another fat raise out of his latest dalliance with bolting State College.

I say nay for financial reasons. It's going to cost $6.7 million to buy out his contract from Penn State. Also, if Schwartz is fired they have to pay him the remaining amount on his contract which is about $12 million. PLUS they'd have to sign O'Brien to a contract. That's a ton of money ...

I really don't get the money argument

If they get rid of Schwartz, it's going to cost them $12 million anyway. The money you put into a new coach is probably going to cost around the same give or take a couple million per year, unless they go to the bargain bin for a head coach, which wouldn't at all surprise me. Obviously O'Brien will cost a little bit more when taking the buyout into account, but all things considered he will probably cost about ~$7 million more than the other top head coaching prospects.

Are the Fords more worried about saving money or winning? Are they willing to hire a subpar coach in order to save a few bucks?

It's not my money, so I have no say in the matter. But why not just go for it? If it doesn't work out then it's going to cost you, but it's going to cost you anyway even if you spend less and it fails. If it works out, then the extra money spent shouldn't matter.

Is that a quote or are you saying nay? cause we as fans shouldn't care, it doesn't count against the cap so its just money out of the owners pocket. And to touch on grandy's post they should look at it as an investment, a couple mil might seem wasted on a coach but it can bring you more millions if we start wining consistently.

Thats what I figured. Thats the difference between the fords and the better owners, they have no problem trying to buy a championship, the fords scoff at the idea cause fans will still buy tickets.

Maybe it's time fans stopped buying tickets or even watching it, boycott the final game they'll lose anyway

Give the fans a coach that plays to win instead of ones that play not to lose, that's what is needed

Not trying to screw with you but why?

I like the idea of him or O'brien. I hear people have credited Wisenhut and McCoy with helping Rivers turn his career around after last season. Maybe he could have that effect on Stafford. I definitely want an offensive minded head coach. I think that's the best way to go. Also it frees up the defensive coordinator to make their own game plans based on what they want. No more is it Gunther or Schwartz's fault or both lol.
