Penn St facing unprecedented penalties

read this article last week. not sure if someone posted this here, but it's an article of the former head of student affairs for Penn St. She was forced out (and her career temporarily ruined) because she stood up to Paterno and the rest of the penn state administration.

doesn't sound like Paterno was just a figurehead at that point. he was still firmly in charge.

things came to a head in '07 in the notorious mob incident when a bunch of players beat people senseless in an apartment. supposedly paterno went apeshit on her at a meeting, and Spanier told her she had seen "the dark side of Joe Paterno."

actual quote:
"Well, Vicky, you are one of a handful of people, four or five people, who have seen the dark side of Joe Paterno. We're going to have to do something about it."
creepy stuff, eh?

the happy ending to the story is that after all the assholes went down at Penn St., people called her up and said she was vindicated, and her career was revived.

Sadly, it doesn't look like Penn State will get penalized for this.

Horrible timing to take the statue down though. It looks like they're only motivation is placating the NCAA.

well, it is the summer. we'll see what happens when most of the idiots get back in the fall.

It's a very political move -- just like John Edwards' affair or any other news being broken on a Friday night when nobody is paying attention. I agree with removing the statue simply because it's an obstacle to the healing. Paterno may not have raped all those boys, but one of his best friends did and he helped him do it.

And to be honest, erecting a statue for a current coach or player is incredibly arrogant.

Perhaps in that light the statue should have remained, but been open to desecration by anyone in any form.

sadly? that's what you wanted, right?

Paterno preventing his students from facing the law so they can keep playing is covered by NCAA rules. They should be penalized for that (also, and more importantly, the people that broke the law need to have assault added to their record). Trying to say 45 counts of child rape = 6 years of bowl bans and 40 scholarships or a TV ban or the death penalty is BS (meaning there is no way to weigh football penalties to child rape). If the NCAA has anything to say about this, they should have had something to say about that kid that was killed at ND.

Crazy that the NCAA was able to make a decision so quickly. Wasn't Penn State supposed to report to them this weekend?

The NCAA isnt following their normal protocal at all here. Usually they let the school respond then hold a hearing then release their findings then let the school sanction themselves then they sanction the school. Here they seem to be using the Freeh report as the schools investigation then instead of going through all the hearings they are just moving forward.

Is there time for students to transfer this year? Maybe that has something to do with the quickness.

“corrective and punitive measures” suggests that money to victims is at least part of the penalty.

I just wish the Paterno family would be quiet and let things play out. They keep defending him like he did nothing wrong when its clear now he did.

more from schad

PSU case, experts say, could set slippery slope/dangerous precedent but NCAA can cite extreme uniqueness and extensivess of cover-up

and espn:

The purpose of the NCAA is to keep a level playing field among schools and to make sure they use proper methods through scholarships and etcetera. This is not a case that would normally go through the process. It has nothing to do with a level playing field.

In the letter explaining why they are removing the statue, they say they are keeping the name "Paterno" on the library.

Anyone on Penn State worth poaching if they can play right away?

I think the strangeness of the situation outweighs any benefits for us.

Such a ****ed up situation. Would be better for most of them to transfer out of the conference.

I know it may sound a little dramatic, and I know the current Penn St. players aren't to blame... still I don't want anything Penn State-related coming near Michigan. glad we don't play them this season either.

Like... yuck.

Part of me feels guilty think about the football repercussions...but I still think it. Looks like the only members of the other division eligible for post season play will be Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois, and Indiana. After Ohio* is back it will still be a weaker division for a long time.

man... these Penn St trustees are the lowest-of-the-low. from the espn article:
The Penn State trustees' hope that the statue's removal might send a positive message was trumped by the NCAA, which had already decided.

"Emmert has been given full reign by the
pansy presidents (at other universities) to make his own decision," said the trustee, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "He has been given the authority to impose these unprecedented sanctions. It's horrible."
what kind of trustee-level administrator says things like that at a time like this? that place really was out-of-control, and it's no surprise when you have shitheads like that in positions of power.

Another quote in the same article from somebody like Red who still doesn't get it:
"The purpose of the NCAA is to keep a level playing field among schools and to make sure they use proper methods through scholarships and etcetera," the chair said. "This is not a case that would normally go through the process. It has nothing to do with a level playing field. It has nothing to do with whether Penn State gets advantages over other schools in recruiting or in the number of coaches or things that we normally deal with."

The former chair said as an example the NCAA didn't get involved in the murder of Yeardley Love, a women's lacrosse player at Virginia, by her former boyfriend, a male lacrosse player at Virginia.

YEAH, but at UVa, the administration didn't cover up the crime, it wasn't a repeat offense, it didn't involve campus property, and they didn't keep it buried for years to protect coaches' reputations so that they could keep playing lacrosse without scaring off recruits.
