Penn St facing unprecedented penalties

essentially turns them more to like a 1-aa school

4 year post season ban, cut schollies by 1/4 or so

I couldn't imagine this happening at Michigan. Canham tried to get Paterno before Bo. Paterno already had a relationship with Sandusky at that point, in fact Sandusky relocated to re-join Paterno in '69, so relocating to Ann Arbor would have been a possibility.

Yeah, righ now there could be the "2nd Mile of Ann Arbor".

I don't like that idea.

I don't either. I don't see how getting Penn State players justifies expanding the scholarship roster; they're just players now in the player pool to recruit or not. If a school wants to use schoolies for years going forward to get them, they can, if a school doesn't it doesn't have to.

Those schools (hypothetically including Michigan) are getting a chance to cherry pick good players already through this; why give anybody the chance to double dip?

Could you imagine if they wanted to stay together and all went to the same school?

The first thing Tweeted by Pat Forde and Bruce Feldman following the sanctions being announced was that a "feeding frenzy" for recruits and transfers would have just begun.

There may be some "lifelong PSU fans" out there who desperately want to play there, but then there are also the majority of talented kids who would view PSU as a conduit to the NFL or at least very reputable.

Now you lose the talented kids who will want to be in Bowls, play for Championships and be associated with a good program along with the sheer numbers that PSU had always enjoyed.

Prior to scholarship limits, JoePa would recruit kids and have them ride the pine just so they could say they "played for Penn State."

That's all gone. The program is essentially toast and I don't feel badly at all. I think a TV ban would have been appropriate too - at least for this upcoming year.

But we all know the only thing ESPNsucks cares about are its ratings and PSU will be a lightning rod for a while, beloved or detested.

on twitter:

@Ben_Jones88: Last quarterback to field a winning team for Penn State: Mike McQueary

Scholarship clarification: The program will be limited to 15 scholarships for the next four years beginning in 2013. The normal limit is 25 per year.

Also, B1G has called an 11am conference to discuss its own actions against Penn State.

This is essentially nuking the football program. The only reason I suspect it exists is to fund the other sports that rely on it's revenue to exist.

This was bigger than the football program. It was an institutional control issue and should be treated as such. They should nuke the entire athletics department for a while. It is a priviledge to have athletics, not a right.

I hope the Big Ten gives them some separate sanctions or the boot from the conference too.

Guess I'll tune into BTN to see what they're going to say at 11am. Something about more fines and censuring.

Question to NCAA: If the coverup goes back to the 1970s, why not vacate wins from that time frame?

I don't think it did go back to the 70's. I've only seen '98...and in '98 police were involved (seems like more investigation is needed to figure out how that got dropped.)

BigTen announces Penn St will lose its share of bowl revenue over next 4 years. Amounts to approx $13 million. They must payout that amount of money to childrens charities.

Yeah I think a victim(s)? has emerged from the 70's, byco, but I don't think there's any evidence that PSU or JoePa knew about Sandusky's shenanigans that far back. He's been molesting for quite some time, but PSU has not been aware of it that long.

Iowa rep keeps laughing. Why does she think this is funny?

Sounds like the Big Ten is going to allow members to accept PSU transfers.

Wisconsin is looking pretty good for the Leaders division representative in the B1G championship game...

The Big Ten conference condemned Penn State and its leaders on Monday and imposed additional sanctions that will run concurrently with the four-year postseason ban announced by the NCAA.

Penn State will not be eligible for any share of the Big Ten conference bowl revenue over the next four years. That is an estimated loss of approximately $13 million today, but with the new postseason bowl agreement, that loss is likely to grow considerably after the 2014 regular season.

Further, Penn State is not eligible to play in the Big Ten championship game during the same span.

PSU’s share will be donated to charities within Big Ten communities with a mission to protect children.

“Penn State University is a great institution and has been a valued member of the Big Ten Conference for more than 20 years,” a Big Ten statement read. “Since early November 2011, it has been working very hard to right a terrible wrong. There is more to be done.

“The intent of the sanctions imposed today is not to destroy a great university, but rather to seek justice and constructively assist a member institution with its efforts to reform. From this day forward, as Penn State continues to make amends the Big Ten Conference and its member institutions will continue to engage with them in every aspect of membership.”

yeah, I always thought trying to weight the divisions like they did was stupid & they should've just gone with a geographic division. Figured it would take some time though; didn't expect the divisions to blow up in the league's face like that, one year later, with ohio, and penn st going down one after the other with post-season bans.

my wisconsin coworker is happy.
