Penn St facing unprecedented penalties

Yeah that's confusing. Does that mean 30 in year one, and then 20 each year after?

Scholarship loss at SC confused ESPNsucks too. And they'll be back on LeDrama's tip by mid-week, ahead of the Olympics.

is that official? yikes.

I don't think PennSt is toast like some people do, but you are not going to hear much from them over the next few years.

I think I got the scholarships wrong. There's confusion on that point right now. I'll edit my previous post.

I think it's just 10 a year. Joe Schad wrote 20 a year just before Emmert said something like "A reduction of scholarships from 25 to 15 for 4 years".

I'm confused as to how to interpret the loss of scholarships, as well.

so they can only grant 15 per year, but they'll still be allowed to have 85 on scholarship? Obviously, we're not the only ones confused, as they aren't reporting it on the bottom line.

I don't really understand the vacating of wins from 1998-2011. Why 1998? Is that when this abuse is supposed to have begun?

Maybe they'll only be allowed to have 75 on scholarship for the next 4 years? And only recruit 15 players/yr?

CBS Sports - Penn State football was hit with a four-year postseason ban, the loss of 40 scholarships over four years and a $60 million fine as a result of the cover up in the Jerry Sandusky scandal

ESPN - Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period, the release said.

Yahoo - The details of the punishment:

Four year postseason ban
10 initial scholarship losses and 20 per year for four years
$60 million fine
All wins from 1998-2011 vacated
Five year probationary period

FoxSports - Other sanctions include a four-year ban on bowl games, the loss of 20 scholarships per year over four years and five years' probation. The NCAA also said that any current or incoming football players are free to immediately transfer and compete at another school.

???????

I'm thinking they can only recruit 15 a year. That's how I'm interpreting it, at least. If that's the case, they will have to be incredibly selective, and they will probably only be able to find the kids that have been lifelong PSU fans, and will play there even if it was infested with roaches. Other than that, their classes are going to be shit.

I think it's 15 a year for 4 years. 75 total the 1st year. 65 total for the next 3 years.

Also NCAA considering waiving scholarship limit for schools that accept Penn St transfers, but school would need to reduce scholarships proportionally the following year

I think they are limited to granting 15 scholarships a year for 4 years (reduced from 25) and will be allowed to have a total of 75 scholarship players the 1st year and 65 total for the next 3 years.

The rest is pretty clear.
$60 million fine~1 year's football revenue
4 year bowl ban
students can transfer
vacated wins 98-2011
5 year probation

Honestly, that seems pretty weak to me. I think they should have gone nuclear on them and banned the football program completely for at least 5yrs, if not forever. This one is gonna sting them, but it isn't anywhere near a death sentence.

By traditional counting (looking at max scholarships allowed) that's a hit of 70 scholarships over 4 years.

All the rhetoric is total BS. They say these penalties are to ensure that athletics are never put ahead of education...it's BS. As it was just pointed out on ESPN, creating the 4-team tournament for the National Championship is going to push this in the opposite direction and killing the Penn State program wouldn't be big enough to change that.

Also, Paterno's win count down to 298.

I couldn't imagine this happening at Michigan. Canham tried to get Paterno before Bo. Paterno already had a relationship with Sandusky at that point, in fact Sandusky relocated to re-join Paterno in '69, so relocating to Ann Arbor would have been a possibility.

This is essentially nuking the football program. The only reason I suspect it exists is to fund the other sports that rely on it's revenue to exist.

I do feel somewhat bad for PSU fans. I can't imagine knowing that my football team was going to suck for a good part of the next decade and be unable to compete in bowls or championships for 40% of the next decade.
