Pete Rose should never be a HoFer

1. Sports gambling is illegal in all states except except in Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana. So it would figure, Rose must have committed an illegal act at some point when he made a bet, if not thousands.

2. Rose pleaded guilty of Tax Evasion in 1991.

3. Rose denied betting on baseball at first, but then admitted to just baseball, but not betting on or against the Reds. That allegation ends up being true as well.

Ty Cobb was an asshole. He didn't commit an offense and he didn't lie. Rose committed criminal acts and lied about them. End of story.

There are a lot of people that think speed / greenies that were taken back in the day helped the performance of baseball players.

It was not a banned substance at the time. And was commonly given out by team trainers to combat fatigue brought on by long road trips and the fact they took trains/buses everywhere.

I'm not making light of the fact, but they didn't break any rules.

Criteria

Voting baseball writers are instructed to judge each candidate on ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to the team or teams on which he played -- as well as to baseball in general.

Assult and a racist.

I really don't care...I think he and Rose should be in. It is the hall of fame...I don't care that he bet on baseball...when he played he was great and he is the all time hit leader. I want Bonds and Clemens in as well. If you were a great baseball player you should be in.

we can start with the most famous Tiger of all time...Ty Cobb

You have to remember the attitude of when he played and was inducted. He was a racist at a time when it was practically a social norm. Especially in the south.

The only real strike against him (using the attitude of the time) is when he went in to the stands and assaulted a fan.

How much was great, and how much was enhanced?

How is it fair to have their stats compared by great players who didn't violate the rules and laws?

The kind of attitude you have about it Tom is why Eastern Bloc nations used to pump their athletes (especially women) full of testosterone and steroids before the Olympics. Be great at any cost.

the problem is we don't know who did or didn't violate the rules. There are guys in the HOF now that used PEDs. Also, the use of "greenies" helped the guys back in the day with their stats.

sggatecl, Would you explain about Whitey Ford.

He took "doctoring" a baseball to a whole different level. He would actually deface the baseball with his wedding ring.

He also would create mud spots out on the mound to load up the ball. A direct quote from Ford concerning a game in the 1963 World Series vs the Dodgers: "I used enough mud to build a dam."

There actually is for some of them. A simple Google search would easily turn things up for Mantle, probably others as well.

Okay thanks.

I still think if ESPN was around back then some of those guys might not be in.

Back in the 70's I was out playing all day everyday. Nowadays kids are inside on their PS4's and tablets and on their cell phones. Different time.

Can't find it now, but someone looked into this and pretty much cleared Cobb and Speaker. The complaint coming from Leonard did not exactly bolster the case.

One star of the game trying to take 2 others out.. Very cut throat.

When he is dead

Pete Rose the player should go into the Baseball Hall of Fame for his on the field accomplishments.
But, because of his off the field activity that should only be after his death.

If Shoeless Joe isn't in Pete should never get in as well.

Look they may have been cleared way back when but a lot of those guys in the early years were always trying to make a extra buck. You read that gambling was so prevalent back then that I am sure it was easy to get involved with something.. Any keep rose out of the hall. I could care less with the Tigers not playing right now. It pains me to watch playoff baseball without the tigers..

He looks like a guy who should be running an 1890s soda fountain with his stupid bow tie on the Fox World Series coverage.
