Preseason Game 2: Lions @ Texans Thread

I see it is having Stafford is a luxury. You can try to draft his replacement well still having a quarterback in place that, if you build a team good enough around him, you can still win.

I still have a sliver of hope that Stafford can take a big step this year. Some guys take late career jumps. Young. Warner. Elway. Maybe #9 can be one of those guys. But even my patience is wearing thin.

Warner was 28 but his first year starting, 2nd in league. Elway? Remember stats and rating were different back then. They didn't have players rated 100. Steve Young was at the age but it was his first year as the guy and he was a stud. Outside the early year win TB.

Stafford has had 141 starts.. Maybe there are some legit late bloomers but the ones you listed not sure is a good comparison.

Elway was so bad in 90, 91 and 92 they drafted Tommy Maddox in the first round. Different era or not he was bad. 14th, 19th and 20th in ratings in those years. Look at the stats.

Warner wasn?t a CFL/XFL guy because he was great. He was on the Rams the year before his breakout but was BEHIND Tony Banks and Steve Bono.

Young was TERRIBLE his first stint in the NFL in Tampa.

Like i said.....sliver of hope. Maybe things click with Bevell. Sometimes, a situation just fits and things take off.

any examples of someone who has over 100 career starts (matt has 141) and then gets significantly better?

It's about the starts. It's about being the guy and when those others became the guy they were much better much quicker. Young had 1 season in TB where he was full time starter. When Warner got his shot he was awesome right away. Elway, please. 8 straight seasons for Matt, the only starter .. He's not going to suddenly get better.

Trent Williams May be available from Washington! He hates Washington and wants to leave. . Should we go out and try and get him ?

Stafford is everything you want as a leader...everyone respects him, always says the right thing, works his ass off, always puts the team first and is GREAT in the community. Everyone knows he has a great arm. Years of bad oline play has engrained happy feet into how he composes himself in the pocket...or lack there of. Sometimes it just simply needs to be a business decision....is he worth 20+ mil when your team is middle of the road year after year. If you can afford it maybe...maybe not.

John Elway was pretty much the same guy from year 3 to the end of his career. Not really an example of someone who dramatically improved after about 100 starts.

Apparently, there are these things called stats you haven't heard of. You should check them out.

I'll help ya.

Those are his ranks (only qualified starters) in his own era. Different game than now or not.....he wasn't that good throwing the ball in his own era until his 11th year. Only top 15 three times in 10 years (28 teams). Never cracked a top 10. Not once. Then does it 5 times in the last 6 years.....with 4 top 5 finishes?

I'd say that's a dramatic improvement.

I guess you are right. On a side note, I always thought Elway was WAY over rated. I don't even think he is a HOF QB.

I don't disagree with that. He played on some really good teams. Teams that likely win at least 1 if not 2 more Super Bowls with a better QB.

Anyway, my point is NOT that Stafford is great and it's all the OC's fault every year (I think he is good/very good but he was NOT good for the last 10 games last year)......just that I still have a SMALL SLIVER of hope that maybe he clicks with Bevell. And as I mentioned before, if it doesn't work......then I think it's time to get the next "franchise" guy in here in 2020.

Its very rare for a 10+ year guy to really improve....it does happen....but not often. In todays salary cap era.....you simply cannot waste that much cap space on one guy if he isn't a top 5 player at his position.
