Preseason Game 3: Patriots @ Lions Thread

The Patriots have allowed 40 or more points just 3 times in the regular season or playoffs in the Bill Belichick era.

I'm probably the only person within 100 miles of Foxboro Stadium that is happy with the final score.

Typical belichick post game presser....short and terse.

Not much to say even if he was a talker.

His touchdown pass wasn't a very good throw but a nice catch by Chef. The first string oline is still terrible in the run and slightly worse than last year in pass pro. To many penalties to Dline. 3 personal fouls and none of them to Suh, which is good but we need to cut down on those even if in my opinion they were weak calls. We should keep 4 TE's and 4 5 wr's instead of the usual six...if my count is correct perhaps 4 wr's. We just don't have anyone besides CJ playing well at that position so lets borrow the Patriots scheme of using size as an advantage. Chef and Fauria can run slot plus with Fauria 6'8" he is generally not guardable by a S or CB. Chef has shown he can get open if Staff could hit him. Grew is that quick hit and center zone buster and Williams is a very good blocker and big body for redzone. Burleson looks slow, Broyles didnt get much tonight but should be good to go and will be fine IMO. Edwards is overhyped and Durham hasn't gone to much or at all with 1's but I think could be a decent 4 or 5. Willis looks to be the best option right now but I dont see him as a 2 more like a slot.

Reggie Bush looked good. Liked a couple of his runs and cut backs eluding tacklers.
The other running back Bell? had some nice runs too.

Game started off with a couple of dumb penalties.

Oh the Lions receiver Fauria? his brother was doing some game play with the wbz guy.

WR's can't get separation and Staff has no confidence in them to make a throw where they can make a play. Mostly just check downs and underneath throws. Burleson looks done its just a matter of time before Broyles is starting.

Was hoping we could stash Fauria on the PS for when sheff goes down with a concussion, oh well.

Staff looked bad but wasn't helped by anyone but Bush. Sheffler's TD came off play action to Bush. Bush was the entire offensive team.

Was just hoping he'd do well without his top target..

It seems Staff doesn't go deep as much as he used to. He's becoming Chubby Check-down..

Yeah, Fauria from the Lions is the nephew of Christian Fauria...former TE and Patriot.

No deep threat with CJ on the bench. Besides, the offense should open up more during the regular season, right?

I don't know. With nothing on the line during preseason I'd think he'd just be chucking the ball down field left and right..But I didn't watch the game and didn't know if he was getting a lot of pass pressure..

lol........just because its preseason doesn't mean you treat it like a game of Madden. He's checking down so much for 2 reasons.

1. Bush is a GREAT receiver out of the backfield and without CJ, our most dangerous offensive weapon.

2. NOBODY else is open.

"Chucking the ball down field" is not a solution. Unless you want your QB to throw 40 INT's this season.

Based on what I've seen from the preseason, the WR depth chart should look like this when the season starts....

1. CJ
2. Willis
3. Broyles
4. Edwards
5. Burleson

Burleson just cannot get open against man coverage anymore. Edwards is a MASSIVE liability in the run game. Broyles has been ok. Willis has been the most impressive WR in the preseason. He is quick, gets separation, and has reliable hands. CJ is Miguel Cabrera in pads.

Once CJ is back the offense will be fine. You really need a true #1 WR in this league for your #2 and #3 guys to be able to get open.

The D line was the story. Jones looked like a beast, but a lot of that is do to man blocking because Fairly and Suh require 4 guys to block them. Every play, Suh and Fairly were standing their guys up, even when double teamed. It was violent to watch, those two are going to hurt people all year. Best DT tandem in Lion history? Most talented for sure.

Teams that don't have good OTs are going to get smoked vs us this year. If you start keeping a man in to double team one of the DEs you're basically using 7 guys to block 4 Lions at that point. That doesn't account for a LB or safety blitz and it leaves 3 receivers to try to get open vs the back 7 of the Lions, you can double team everyone.
