Backus had surgery and will miss "significant" time, Best is symptom free and ready for 2012, and Birkett says Avril is Detroit's top priority.

I really hope the third one isn't true. But I trust Mayhew not to overpay him.

Re-signing Backus should be even cheaper now, $3 mil tops, but I hope he's ready for training camp.

I want Avril back but my gut is telling me its not going to happen, too much money

I'm content with Young and Jackson. I really am.

You guys are hilarious. Avril was our BEST DL this year. Who cares if he benefits from our other DL getting double-teamed? He played lights out this year...

Why break up that DL now? KVB is gone soon and we still have guys like Young and LoJack who could fill in.

I'd rather have a DE who gets half the sacks and pressures but is lights out against the run while still getting that kind of pressure on the QB. Avril hasn't done jack vs top teams when it counted most anyway, far better to have a guy who can stop the run as well as apply a good amount of pressure on QBs. If a team wants to trade for Avril, I'm down with that, especially if it bolsters the DBs. Just my opinion though.

From listening to Schwartz's remarks as well it does sound like signing Avril is a high priority.

1. I don't think he played lights out. He got a bunch of coverage sacks, and he (like most of our DL) got owned regularly against the run.
2. The worst time to pay someone is after a career year (stats wise, of course).

I don't want the Lions to simply let him walk, but slapping a tag on him and then shipping somewhere for a 2nd (or maybe even a 1st, pass rushers are always overvalued) seems like a better idea, especially when you take a look at our cap situation. A lot of players are gonna see a jump in salary. Re-signing Avril means theres little chance to improve the secondary.

Also, it hasn't been talked about much on here, but I don't think Corey Williams should be brought back with that high cap #. He has lost a step and we can't afford to pay him $5-6 mil IMO

i get that if he's worth too much you get rid of him..but you already have it in your mind that he's asking for a bunch..(a bunch of coverage sacks LOL) who cares that he has almost 20 sacks the last two years i guess...anyways...if you are worried about too much money in the DL..then you ship out kvb or corey williams first......you build a team with young talent..not old fading ones..

He played well and some of the best DE in the NFL don't stop the run well.

Never thought I'd say this, but I hope they re-sign Backus

Fox and whoever (Culbreath?) were injured all season (Fox can't stay healthy)

Good LTs rarely, if ever, see free agency

He's familiar with the rest of the O-line and the system

Not sure how comfortable I'd be with a rookie 1st or 2nd round LT protecting Stafford's blind side

True.

I like Cliff and I want him back but at the right price. It is more important that we keep CJ and Staff than Cliff.

But Staff isn't ready for an extension. And CJ still has a year left. So Avril is the guy.

Looks like my boy might've misheard Backus at the wedding...or perhaps being a playoff team rekindled the fire. Either way I think it's good news if he sticks around, but drafting his replacement is still a must.

He's talked about getting Tamba Hali money. Too much.

Trading KVB would create a lot of dead money, and he's not even making close to as much as what Avril wants.

Where was Cliff Saturday night? He was taken out with ease. And he still can't stop the run. We have younger talent that needs to see the field. Jackson and Young are actually our two most effective all around DEs.

If Avril wanted $6-7 mil per year, he would've already been re-signed. He wants $10-12 mil per year. You wanna give him that?

how does KVB create dead money ? all his guarantees are paid.

seriously some of you clowns talk outta your ass.

what is the current KVB contract? i forget what how many years he signed for. not opposed to keeping him until it expires, but he is obviously declining so i see him being re-signed but only for less money and playing as #3 or 4 DE. would be tough to lose his leadership and motivation skills though.

Coverage sacks??...lol. Bullshit he did. He was our best DL all year...bottomline. We know what we get in Avril. He's a one-trick pony, but he's a playmaker, a game-changer and he gets to the QB. We know he doesnt play the run well, but that's why we have guys like Jackson, Hill, Suh. Then they went out and acquired LB's like Tulloch and Durant to stuff the run. Pretty sad they failed at it this year though. Next year is a new year.

They need to re-sign Avril. It's a must.

4 years 26 million...10 of it guaranteed and paid in the 1st year.

he's set to make 5 million per in 2012 and 13...all salary , none of it guaranteed...he can be cut , traded , whatever with no cap hit.

getting rid of him would actually open up 5 million on the books for 2012.

is his leadership worth 5 mil per for 2 years? i'd say yes, but i still think he'll be dropped to #3 or 4 DE before the contract runs out. if freeing up that 5 mil helped result in a new #1 CB and Houston as #2 i'd jump at that chance and count on someone to step up as the new motivator and leader on D.
