He gets it immediately. Hence the name "signing bonus". The advantage for Detroit is that the cap hit is spread out. So, he gets all $3.69 mil right away (he basically doesn't lose anything), but it only counts for 1/3 of that each year on the cap. So Detroit saved $2.46 mil last year. If we cut him, we still have to take on that cap hit, but all $2.46 mil counts this year.

my bad , I missed the 2010 restructure only saw the original 10 million signing bonus.

so he's a 2 million dollar hit if cut....which he won't be either way anyway in 2012.

won't be here in "13 though.

I think, by '13, he'll be asked to take a pay cut before he's cut. Remember, we'd still have 1.2 mil hit if we cut him then.

I can see him being willing to do that if he feels it is his last good shot at a ring. At the end of a long career is when many players start thinking more about the ring than $$$, and I think he is that type.

You guys are hilarious. Avril was our BEST DL this year. Who cares if he benefits from our other DL getting double-teamed? He played lights out this year...

Why break up that DL now? KVB is gone soon and we still have guys like Young and LoJack who could fill in.

This. Build for long term success, avril is part of that. You guys talk about money too much, when in reality, Mayhew can probably do things with the cap you guys have no idea about, if he wants to keep these players, he will.

Whatever he does with the cap hurts us in future years.

Anyways, its pretty simple: Avril wants $12 million per year. Thats Jared Allen money. Thats top 5 DE in the NFL money. For a guy who's best year was only 11 sacks. This year, Jared Allen doubled Avril in sacks. They definitely deserve to get paid the same amount.

And btw, he disappeared in some big games (like Saturday night). He's not worth 10% of the cap.

avril is not JPP, who does deserve top de money. avril is barely above average at best no matter who wants to hype him up to be greater.

someone provide me with a link where Avril say's he wants 12 million a year....all I've ever read him say was that he wants to stay here long term and hoped it could be worked out.

the Lions were the one's who tagged him last year , I think hoping someone would bite on a trade for him.

Either way, Avril is in line for a big deal this off-season. Charles Johnson set the market for defensive ends last summer, when he signed a six-year, $72-million deal, and Avril said that contract and one signed by Tamba Hali for $60 million over five years have caught his attention.

Avril definitely wants his money. He wanted it last year but it did not happen. He is not going to get the money that he is hoping for, but he should get a nice bump in pay anyway. After Charles Johnson signed Ray Edwards signed for much less. It is really all about finding a team desperate for a DE and being the first to sign the fat contract. If there are limited teams searching then less money has to be taken if you want to play. There were a lot of 1 year deals that players signed last year in hopes of netting a larger contract this year. With the salary cap to remain at 120 million the players may not be getting the large contracts they were hoping for this year either. Should make for some decent FA movement this offseason though.
