Reiff Slipping

I don't dislike the Reiff pick. Out of our entire draft, the Reiff pick made the most sense and seems the safest. I think he'll be a solid starter for years to come. That said, I'm not sure he's gonna be our stud LT of the future. In that spot, I think I probably would have taken DeCastro, but if Reiff becomes our LT it really won't matter how good DeCastro becomes because of the positional value difference between drafting an LT and a OG.

I agree, I wanted DeCastro as my top pick (though I never thought Reiff would fall that far until right before the draft). But the Lions desperately need tackle depth in case of injury and Reiff is more versatile. He played LT, RT, and Guard at Iowa. DeCastro is strictly a G.

it's funny how before we drafted him, everyone was ripping on Reiff, but now everyone is in love.

I never thought we had a shot at getting him, almost all mocks the past 3 months had him long gone before we picked. I have been one of those take an O-line guys for the past few years. I am glad they didn't in the past few because we got much better players in hindsight but Reiff should not have been there at 23 and was as much of a steal as DeCastro. I still wish they would have taken Konz to replace the line midget in round 2.

We have a support group. Welcome hoplite.

I havent hear much about Backus' rehab....is he going to be 100% to start the season. Reiff provides a huge boost to value if hes slotted in the LT position for any amount of time....obviously something Decastro would not have been able to do. Decastro is solid to say the least but replacing Peterman is less of a need than replacing Goz. Tackles should be set for a year or 2 when we will need to replace Backus. Now if we can only convince Mayhew that Crayola is garbage....i figured them watching tape every week of him on his ass or getting blown off the ball would be enough...but apparently its not.

I wonder what will come of Jason Fox too. I think he's finally healthy. Any chance he supplants Goz?

I have little hope for Fox but they need to know what he can do. Maybe by 2013, Reiff can be the LT and Fox can be a RT.

With the way his career has gone so far Fox will injure himself getting out of his car the first day of training camp and be done for the year. He may be the worst pick MM has made. At least D Will saw the field for a few plays.

Not sure why everyone hates fox, the kid turns 24 this month has 2 years in the system and is going into his first full offseason. He was a 4th round pick so his expectations are only to be a back up for the left and right tackle position.

To be fair some people's expectations were much higher. He has consistently failed to meet those expectations and now may fail to meet the expectations of a back up. He has been on IR for those "two years in the system" not exactly what I call quality development.

I know most of my hate stems from lack of attention paid to the Oline in the draft and FA over the past few years and many pointing to Fox as a viable option. Even the FO may have thought so, although I hope they are beginning to wise up to the fact that he's a bust.

Last year I was hoping he would step up but with injuries didn't get the chance, he played in 4 games his rookie year. with reiff, backus, and goz I dont see much pt again this year but hopefully he can make goz expendable.

He was drafted hurt. They knew he wouldn't be 100% his rookie year. And on top of that, he was raw.

Last year, he got hurt in training camp.

Its not a FACT that he's a bust. By that sense, Matthew Stafford was a bust last year since he could not stay healthy after two seasons as well (and if you remember, many people were ready to give up on him lol). Obviously, this year is his last chance. If he gets hurt again, he's done. But as far as his play is concerned, he hasn't even had a chance to show what he can do while 100% healthy. So, its not a FACT that he's a bust.

FACT Matt Stafford and Jason Fox should not be used in the same sentence unless in comparison of MM hits and misses. FACT if Fox showed the flashes of talent Stafford showed in years 1-2 I would be singing a different tune. FACT I hope he proves to be a great player but currently my expectations are set on fry cook.

Yeah, Big Difference. In season 1-2, I got wood when I saw Staff throw the ball. Much hope. Haven't seen it with Fox, injury or raw, or not. I sure hope he can make a contribution, just not expecting much.

When Stafford showed you something, he was healthy. Fox has never been healthy.

So, a raw, injured rookie struggles at *right* tackle for a couple games, and doesn't play in year 2. That means its a FACT that he's a bust?

You SAW him in year 2. Didn't see Fox in year 2. Actually, many people didn't like Stafford in year 1, minus the Cleveland game.

I never said you should expect anything. But he's not necessarily a bust either. You shouldn't just write him off, especially the staff expects things from him.

Its just like how some Lions fans claim Leshoure is already a bust. Total bullshit.

Who didn't like him in year 1? He was a rook, of course his stats were nothing to write home about but from the first time he got into a live game, you could tell he had it.

I don't count an injury to a bust, I doubt many do. He was drafted where he should have been and had an injury.

I don't know where you were, but I remember tons of fans hating him during his rookie season. People called into talk shows hating on him, the ESPN boards were filled with hate, ect. Not saying any of it was legit, but its what happened.
