THE BIGGEST CLUE.
Totally Tigers
The Tigers are about to make their biggest decision since Dave Dombrowski left this organization.
No, it has nothing to do with top draft pick selection.
And no, it has nothing to do with the call-up of top prospects.
It has to do with their managerial selection. And it actually has little to do with how this new skipper will manage.
It has everything to do with the vision and direction of this team.
Think about it.
This team says it?s in a rebuild. A lot of teams say that and for many, it?s code for ?saving money? and oops, enhancing the bottom line. And it?s such a big topic that the MLBPA has it as a top issue for the upcoming CBA negotiation.
The Tigers have an owner who hasn?t been seen or heard from since early spring. So much so, that it?s not unreasonable to want to put his face on the side of a milk carton.
He ain?t talkin?.
And then there?s the GM he extended in absentia in a surprise announcement late on a Friday afternoon of the July 4th weekend. The extension remains a mystery as Chris Ilitch refuses to share the length of the contract. It is the only GM contract in baseball that does not offer that information.
And you have to ask why. None of the plausible reasons are reassuring.
Not exactly any votes of confidence here.
And you wouldn?t be wrong if you believe that this team is sleep-walking from season to season.
The issue is that people, and teams, can say whatever they want. But just because they say that they are rebuilding the Tigers into a competitive team doesn?t mean it?s actually true.
At least not yet.
