Locked On Detroit Tigers Podcast: Lloyd McClendon's Audition Tape. 20 minutes.

Episode Info:
The Tigers lost a tough game last night to the Twinkies. Chris recaps that game and in segment two, discusses Jeff Passan?s report that the 2021 draft order will be based solely off of the 2020 records. He talks about why that sucks for the Tigers. And of course he previews tonight?s game.

RAPID FIRE.
Totally Tigers

The biggest news recently had nothing to do with the roster, but with the suddenly-created managerial opening. Today?s version of Rapid Fire is focused on managers past and present.
As always, Kurt and Holly don?t share their opinions in advance of publishing. So let?s see if they are on the same page.
With the departure of Ron Gardenhire, are the Tigers preparing to take that next step in returning to competitiveness? Are we starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel as it concerns the rebuild? Or is the team still in a holding pattern as they await the further development of prospects?
All of this should factor into the new skipper that the Tigers chose. Kurt and Holly will share their thoughts ? and answers ? to everything managerial. But they only have 2 sentences each in order to make their points heard. Let?s get to it??.

1. Whether you believe the Tigers weren?t going to renew Ron Gardenhire?s contract or whether Gardy decided to call it quits on his own, were you surprised at his departure?

2. Do you believe that Lloyd McClendon has a serious shot at the managerial position?

3. Do you believe that Don Kelly has a solid chance in returning to Detroit?

4. Do you believe that the Tigers will seriously consider AJ Hinch, former manager of the Houston Astros?

5. Other than those listed above, name another candidate you believe has a solid shot at being seriously considered for the Tigers new managerial opening.

WHEN DID HE KNOW?
Totally Tigers

Ron Gardenhire walked in to Comerica Park in the morning like it was just another day and finished it retired, before the game was played that afternoon.

Everyone has presented their position on what happened. But none of us will know for sure. So many are questioning what was really happening when Al and Ron stood before the virtual press and explained the day and how it culminated in Gardy?s retirement.

So I have some things I wonder about.

What is it like to work for Al Avila? What is it like to work for an owner like Chris Ilitch?

How quickly did Gardy notice that things were off in Detroit?

He was the manager in Minnesota for several years during a time when the Twins organization was successful in putting winners on the field.

BUYER BEWARE. Must read.
Totally Tigers

Goodness, more than a week later, the Detroit Tigers continue to beat the Ron-Gardenhire-had-to-retire-for-health-reasons drum. Any Warhol had a famous comment about everyone getting their 15 minutes of fame, but geez, this is ridiculous.

When Brad Ausmus left, absolutely zippo was written about him.

But now we?ve got daily stories oozing from friends, family and assorted pets about how Ron told them he was leaving. Just waiting for that interview with his kindergarten teacher to hit.

The problem is, these same newspapers printed identical articles one week before his departure quoting Ron about his plan to sit down with Al Avila at the end of the year to discuss a possible contract extension.

Oops.

The Tigers are hoping you will have forgotten all about those pieces.

Whether Gardy was told this would be his last year and he decided to leave before that last road trip or whether he was fed up and simply made the decision to leave, we?ll likely never know. But we do know something happened. And if you don?t believe that, simply watch the presser from his last day. He and Al Avila were definitely not on friendly terms ? or even close.

But this blog is not about that event. It?s about the continuous effort by this organization to spin story after story so the team always looks good. It?s to quell the controversy that hasn?t been going away fast enough. It?s to keep the stain from sticking.

As someone who works regularly with pr and crisis management companies, this flood of stories looks familiar. It?s called a saturation campaign.

The first question that should be asked. How do you think the Tigers can improve there 3-12 finish to the 2020 season. Not sure how many can answer 8-7. Tigers high water mark was 16-16 and finished 23-35, so there last 26 games went 7- 19. They had a strange schedule with the postponements double headers and rainouts. Like after they went 14-15, they went 23-34, and then 15-15 then 16-15. Again how do you change the losing numbers to winning numbers, mr. new manager. I mean three years of Ron was to be rebuild years right.

Not sure but I think there's still more water in the boat than out of it!

They were fortunate the season was only 58 games. They have a habit of being average early to bad later with a junk finish.

ANGEL VS. DEVIL: WHO?S WHO?
Totally Tigers

Remember the old point-counterpoint skit on SNL with Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd? Well, imagine Holly and Kurt in their spots instead?
The off-season offers a good opportunity to relax a little and have some fun but this Angel vs. Devil segment might scare you a little, depending on the topic.
Expect to get more for your entertainment dollar, maybe even a little more than you bargained for. Don?t take it too seriously though ? it?s all in good fun.
As always, feel free to share your response to the question and have some fun with it. We sure did.

Should the Tigers hire AJ Hinch as Manager?
