Royals @ Tigers game thread 7/7/12

hey that's right. what are they now 4 from tie and 5 to break the yankees staff record?

710 is the Yanks record from 2001. Hopefully Max can break it tomorrow, and more importantly, deliver another Tigers victory!!

4 in a row and we're over .500, a win tomorrow and it's a good end to the 1st half.

Going by number of games technically the first half ended July 3rd, the Tigers finished the first half 39-42. Now 4-0 to start the second half (again # of games wise) say didn't they start the first half 9-3. hmmm I sense a pattern developing here.

Now JV is done for Sunday...

JIM USE MOP UP GUY UP 4 OR MORE

You say this a lot? Do you know a mop up guy is considered the worst BP guy this is? I know JV stinks in non saves but don't put in a mop in guy.

Yeah Mitch i know a mop up guy is a bottom feeder on the staff... But Not many teams in baseball history come back from 4, 5, 6 or more runs in the ninth.. Just play the odds and you save you better relief pitchers for the next day... I will give you the 4 run mark... Maybe you could use a better guy then a so called 'mop up guy" But with 3 out of 10 considered a great hitter in baseball, and 2.5 out of 10 consider a marginal Hitter.. Just about anybody you put in up 4 runs or more in the 9th will hold on to that lead...

How can anyone who knows that three outs retire the side not comprehend that Fister is the WP?

Eh, a pitcher has to be able to pitch when his number is called.

I blame Valverde far more than Leyland, a manager has to be able to call on his stopper at any time.

Why is it half the time Valverde has pinpoint control and others he cant throw a strike to save his life without it being a soft cookie?

Valverde gets the money to close games, even when there is not a save situation. He has to figure out the reason why he turns into a combination of Steve Blass and Willie Hernandez circa 1989 with more than a three-run lead to start an inning.

Just came from the game...was a blast except for the 9th.

Valverde simply has to get the job done.

I understand Leyland using Valverde, there's 5 days off after todays game, why not throw out your so-called best reliever.

I thought I heard prince say something in the post game interviews about the fans not being in it much for JV in the 9th as in disappointed, did I hear that right?

The fans turned on him...and quick too.

It just seems that Papa Grande always struggles in non save situations. I am not sure why but he does. I wish they would stop using him in non save situations but Leland makes all kinds of moves that drive me crazy. Like playing Raburn every chance he can. I swear he does it just to piss us off.

Valverde had actually been lights out in his last few non save situation appearances, this was a little bit of a surprise.

I'm still wondering why he burned 3 pitchers in the 7th inning.

I'm not sure what the numbers are but CL tend to have worse stats in non-save situations.

where the boo's for JV or for Leyland for bringing him in to begin with in a non save situation? I thought it odd he got more boo's than Raburn, I mean shxt man maybe we fans are becoming just a bit too eager to spread the negative joy lately? It's been a long hard disappointing first half, let's try to start showing a bit more support for these guys maybe. Kinda feel bad for Raburn it's not like he isn't humble about it all like Inge wasn't. Raburn knows he's been a disappointment and doesn't make any excuses at least. Maybe if fans showed him more support it would help him turn it around?

From yesterday's thread...

In his last 6 appearances, 3 of which weren't save situations, Valverde has given up 0 ERs, 2 hits, and walked no one. He's looking very good as is the rest of our BP.

Can't really fault Leyland for this one. He's been pitching as well as he has all year long until today.
