In softball you make the defense make the throw. That's what I told my girls in little league.
Yes - dude - in EVERY game of ball and stick...from MLB to entry level t-ball - or girl's little league softball - you make the defense make the throw!!!
Hutchins is such a great recruiter, hitting coach and pitching coach - so awful of a base running coach.
This should not be a teachable moment - this moment should be taught on the first game of practice.
Hell, this moment should have happened long before the runner got to Michigan.
You on a ball hit in play that hits the ground before it's caught...you run to the base you're headed to, and you don't stop until you get there get there.
This might be the 20th time I've pointed out unimaginably stupid base running screw ups under Hutch.
Fielding isn't much better.
I was down at Fullerton watching the girls play Notre Dame in the annual tournament; and Dorian Shaw fielded a ground ball at first base with a Notre Dame runner at second and made the play at the base - and looked up and the runner was hung up between second and third.
And it looked like Dorian had no idea what to do.
So I stood up and I screamed at the top of my lungs..."RUN HER DOWN!!!" Then Dorian did that and the runner broke for either third or second, and Dorian threw to the base and made the putout.
A number of years ago, there was this little girl, Alessandra Giampolo, who was the centerfielder on the national championship team as a freshman. Anyways, I used to see her parents at Fullerton every year; they live in Pasadena.
So, that play ended the inning, and Ali's dad came over to me, laughing, and said..."say...you got pretty excited on that play..."
