Spartans vs. terps at home

Not sure if it's true but I heard trice called the timeout before the layup. The one that baffles me is the one after the Costello make, why call it up 3 with 12 seconds if you're not going to foul? Maryland didn't have any left.

It's also safe to say that Ellis was a recruiting mistake and that Nairn was not deserving of a 4 star ranking

You know MSU basketball has hit an all time low when they go to a guy like Costello when they need a bucket...fucking Costello.

After the game Jay Williams said something like "...and Michigan State was playing through Matt Costello. No offense to Matt Costello but Michigan State is not going to win many games playing through Matt Costello."

I bet that's the first and lat time Matt Costello hears his name on ESPN 3 times in 10 seconds. Unfortunately for him they were talking about how much he sucks.

Yep and it hurts even more when analysts and fans are already saying that Ulis should be running Kentucky's offense and Harrison should be backing him up.

Stagnant offense aside, there's a certain softness with this group. Maryland punished us on the boards and seemed to get the majority of the loose balls, other than those that Trice got to.

Not only did they not foul at the end of regulation, they let Wells come down and get a pretty good look at the basket without even having to give the ball up or have them work it around at all. Just horrendous all the way around. Then they were up 4 in the first OT with a little over a minute left and had the ball and let that get away too.

And of course opponents have all figured out since about the middle of last year that the way to attack MSU is just go at them off the dribble and they'll get themselves into foul trouble and put you in the double bonus midway through a half.

Not sure I'd say Ellis was a mistake. He fell into their lap after they thought they were done with their recruiting. I definitely expected more out of him this year though. The ankle injury seems to have set him back quite a bit as far as getting into the flow of things. He offers more defensive potential than Forbes though so they're going to need him.

Nairn may be fast and all, but good God. He flat-out cannot make a shot from anywhere. His shooting mechanics don't look bad, but he has zero confidence and needs to calm down when he's out there.

a lot of MSU fans on rivals were talking about how they'd rather have Tum than Ulis, I couldn't disagree more after watching their high school tapes. I think Ulis may have been a bigger recruiting miss than Alexander, Jones, Okafor, Looney, Travis, booker, or bluiett. Ulis is a great playmaker and he'll stick for 4 years due to his height most likely.

I'm not closing the door on Nairn being a good player but he was not one of the top 60 players in this class and he's far from our best freshman. I am comparing him to Travis Walton as a freshman, a guy who could handle the ball, play some D and wasn't a threat to shoot the ball at all. Nairn may end up being a Walton type player by the end of his career, he could still be very productive but he was vastly overrated and the Ulis miss will haunt this program.

just getting to read up on the game now, maryland had 0 free throws in the first half and 32 in the second, that's insane.

it also would have been nice to have the izzone for this one, 6 of the 16 home games this year come when classes weren't in session

Izzo said Trice called the timeout because he had told him too if Schilling got the rebound. He also said that he's open to criticism about it.

I don't think the timeout call is any big deal. For all we know Maryland heard the whistle and stopped playing and that's how we ended up with a breakaway. If a 75% shooter hits both free throws after that instead of 1, then the 3 at the end doesn't even matter.

And again as for the 3. If you're not going to foul in that situation, you need to extend out even further with the defense and dare them to either drive by you, give up the ball, or take a 28 footer, not take a couple of dribbles, get your feet right and measure the thing.

That wasn't through timeout I was talking about, it was the one after the second Costello free throw. Why give them time to set something up?
