Well McCoy just signed a 7 year 98 million extension. How much more are teams willing to pay for Suh.

Well, we just found out the exact number that Suh is worth. McCoy was actually the better player last year, but they are very comparable over their careers. I don't see another team offering more than 14 per year now, the market has been set.

So now it should be a pretty simple process. Here's how much a top DT is worth. Either we offer the same or we don't.

Suh doesn't want to play in Detroit. They will have to offer more to keep him.

makes you wonder why we didn't take Nix III in the 3rd rd over a back up center.

Either Suh or Fairley are getting re-signed. And Mosely and Reid are still on the roster. Draft another DT next year to compete. That's why...

Mosley's contract is up next year too and he just got kicked off the team for two weeks. Reid is a mid round rookie project from an Ivy school, if he is our replacement for Suh or Fairley expecting a slight drop off would be an understatement. It's like calling the Marrianas Trench a water logged ditch. If you were going to resign Fairley you would have done it before this season or at least picked up his option for next season, since it is a massively cheap rookie deal. Now your leverage is zero and you are guaranteed to pay at least as high as the high bidder to keep him. Suh will get more than $100 mil from someone which I said months ago and was called crazy. Mayhew and friends are, will, and have always been complete fuck ups. This one is just has the glare of a million suns on it.

wait...we don't have our all pro DT signed??? We have a rookie contract penciled in as our other starter at DT. meh....don't pick up his cheap option. Let him play it out and ask for the world. Mayhew hates cheap deals with guys that actually produce....such a nice guy.

mayhew problems.

mayhew is either really this dumb...

or he had no plans to resign either of them at DT and should have planned ahead for his 3-4 NT. Nix would have been a perfect project in rd 3. Doing none of the above is just moronic...

Xanders had to introduce him to Excel spreadsheets. I said it a thousand times and I'll say it again, if we ever do win (and I believe in Ink's Nicholas Cage Nextesque Super Bowl dream) it will be in spite of these idiots.

And had we drafted Nix you idiots would be bitching because he is now on IR and we shouldnt have drafted a player that would get injured and contribute nothing when instead we drafted Reid who has played well.

Suh is gone after the year I think we all know that. I wouldnt mind signing Fairley if we can get a good deal done. For as good as Suh is you just cant pay a DT 16-17 mil a year on a long term deal. Tampa can risk it because they arent already paying Staff and Calvin like we are.

Eric Ebron is a thing.

Well we were 4-2 and 6-3 last season.. Just sayin'

I hear ya, and a let down isn't out the picture...But come on, don't complain when the team is playing good football and finding ways to gut out wins. Everybody thought our D was going to be horrid and we're playing as a top D in the NFL right now(led by Suh).

Give the man a 7yr $105mil contract and call it good. He's a leader of a top D and 3yrs from now 5+ other defensive players will be making more then him in the league. It's not every day or every draft you find a player of Suh's caliber. When you land a talent like that, you can't let it walk.

This. Everyone is talking about how we can't invest that much money into the DT position, but Suh's presence also improves our DEs, LBs, and CBs. The market has already shown that yes, at DT is worth 14 million a year. Further, the cap is only going up. 5 years from now, 15 million won't be squat for a truly elite DT.

Suh will be 28 next year. If we sign him to a 7 year contract, the likelihood is that he'll be cut at the end of year 3 or 5. Since we'll likely backload the base pay in those later years, the contract won't really be counting 14+ million against the cap in the years we actually have him.

Over 50m guarantee for a DT too much. Good or great it doesn't matter it can be used for so much..

5-2 and still bitching about GM moves. LOL...

Where does the props go to the early season success?

Pretty much this entire conversation is about next season/the future. I don't see how the Lion's record BEFORE the half way point this season is relevant at all to a conversation about what the Lions will do at DT during the off season and how the previous draft might have made it easier.

Why is it too much? We paid him 40 guaranteed as a rookie, and he's lived up to his draft billing. Is there something inherently unimportant about DTs? Do we realistically have better options to spend that money?

Suh makes our defense work. He draws double and triple teams inside that open up lanes for the rest of the line. Our DBs are still not that great, but they benefit from the pressure our line creates (which again is something Suh has a huge part in). Suh is the best defensive player on the team by a wide margin, and losing him would not be easy to replace at all, even with multiple players.
