Suh contract

Why is it too much? We paid him 40 guaranteed as a rookie, and he's lived up to his draft billing. Is there something inherently unimportant about DTs? Do we realistically have better options to spend that money?

Suh makes our defense work. He draws double and triple teams inside that open up lanes for the rest of the line. Our DBs are still not that great, but they benefit from the pressure our line creates (which again is something Suh has a huge part in). Suh is the best defensive player on the team by a wide margin, and losing him would not be easy to replace at all, even with multiple players.

Because it's a DT. You could add other reasons, like With two others who are making mega contracts, Or the fact our CB's "are still not great" (your words), etc. So he's not easy to replace, upgrade elsewhere.

In the end I don't think it really matters. He seems to want to go elsewhere. Maybe lots of wins can change that. I doubt it but you never know.

I didn't know if they have the personal or can get it - to switch to the 3-4 but if both DT are gone it'll be easier in my opinion.

Interior lineman don't make as much. There is a reason all of your money goes to OT and DE in the nfl. Guards and defensive tackles just don't impact the game as much.

Is there evidence to support that DTs don't impact the game as much or deserve as much money as other positions? You could have said the same about 3-4 DEs (rush OLB is where the money's at), but then Watt comes around and destroys offenses from that position.

I'm not saying Suh is as good as Watt. Nobody is as good as Watt. But to make such a narrative-based and uninformed argument as "it's a DT" seems very shallow. People said the same thing about a CB making 15 million when Revis first signed that huge contract. They said one CB just can't make a big enough impact. Revis had his problems with injuries, but he still played out a number of years on that huge contract because teams realized just how important shutting down the opponent's best receiver really is. Now any team with a truly elite CB is more than happy to dump huge money into him.

Suh is our version of a shutdown CB. You can't run on him, and he puts tons of pressure on opposing O-lines. Rather than looking at him like any old DT, look at him as the position-defying force he is.

He hasn't been dominant every year. Good but not dominate.. But you can't forget about the fact 3 guys making as much as Matt, Calvin and possibly Suh. And the Revis deal was stupid.. Maybe if he didn't get that deal they could have signed more guys to get better.. Because it's more than just having a shutdown CB.

DT's don't normally make what Suh could get, but DTs don't normally impact a game the way Suh does.

I'll be thrilled if they find a way to bring him back, but I'll be okay if they don't. He deserves the pay day. He should get more than McCoy did, and less than Watt did, which isn't a lot of wiggle room.

But he also knows he can make another 10M a year in endorsements in New York, so the money isn't in the cards.

I'm really hoping that we can find a way to bring Suh back. He may not put up the stats of his rookie year (or of a DE), but the guy is a force and someone other teams have to plan around. He also seems to have changed and become a very disciplined player who rarely gets penalties anymore. That's been impressive to see.

Based off his production the first half of the season what are the chances Bush is released. Between relasing him and Tulloch should give us some money towards offering Suh the contract he is looking for.

I hope it is 100%

I get rid of Bush, Broyles, Jason Jones and Tulloch to keep Suh. Let Fairley and Sims walk.

He impacts the game greatly with consistent pressure. Pressure similar to the top DEs actually other than sacks. But sacks are decent. And DT pressure is more disruptive than DE pressure. The pocket collapsing is huge. Plus Suh has become a beast in run defense too.

2011 is Suh's only down year really and that's mainly for run defense. 2010, 2012, 2013 and now 2014, very good durable impactful player. Backup plan should be Fairley back and go after Jared Odrick.

Alot depends on a 140 million cap or 135 million cap.

if were staying 4-3 you need to keep him. If we want to change to a 3-4 I actually think itd be a semi easy transition as long as we can find a space eater NT.....and wed have a TON of money to spend at other positions. Either way is fine....Austin just has to decide what he prefers to run. Obviously he doesn't mind running a 4-3 with one of the best DTs in football....but if hes gone, it might be time for a change. If suhs gone we don't need to resign fairley coming off an injury.

Totally agree on Bush. Time to go. He's 5.2 against the cap next year, 5.7 the year after. If I'm reading this right http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/detroit-lions/reggie-bush/ releasing him would save 3.2 in 2015 and 4.7 in 2016.

As far as the potential 3-4 goes. Do you guys think Suh could play the DE in a 3-4? Him, Ziggy and a space eater on the DL.

I think he would be a beast as a 3-4 DE.

I think he wants those endorsement deals. But the Giants are average and the Jets suck. Maybe Dallas?

JJ Watt is in Houston and he has been on some national brand commercials. I think if you are a true star you can get them anywhere. In the case of Suh....his image has taken a hit due to his dirty play and he is just a DT....not sure if he could get a major endorsement deal anywhere.

Those dirty plays were a lot time ago. And some were even a bad rap. He's personable so yeah I think he can get better deals than playing for Detroit.

2013 was not that long ago. He has not done anything this year...so far!

Either way...it's perception and he is perceived as one of the dirtiest players in the NFL.

And perception might be different in the commercial world than what other players think. Compared to players beating their GF/Wifes/Kids and the other crimes in the NFL he looks pretty good..
