Suh contract

That's just playing. NFL has chop blocks all the time.. They're not all dirty.

IMO...That one was. Levy was 10-15 yards in front of Sullivan...he was going to coast into the end zone untouched (which he did) and Suh went after Sullivan's knees.

JJ Watt is in Houston and he has been on some national brand commercials. I think if you are a true star you can get them anywhere. In the case of Suh....his image has taken a hit due to his dirty play and he is just a DT....not sure if he could get a major endorsement deal anywhere.

Calvin does OK in Detroit, as far as national exposure is concerned. I think Suh just wants to be more of a celebrity.

I think he'll go to a bigger market.....but more for the celebrity factor.

Chicago. Dallas. Even a shitty NY team. IMO, a winning team is his 3rd priority after celebrity and endorcements because he's going to get paid WHEREVER he goes.

I'd LOVE to have him back.....but unless we make a deep playoff run this year and he gets some serious media love for that run.....he's gone.

I think he will leave unless the Lions pay a LOT more than any other team is willing to pay...heck...even that may not keep him here!

I remember the play.. It was dumb. Levy was already past him but I don't see that one as intentional.

If he leaves for money or to be a "celebrity" that is the most egotistical thing I 've ever had. Lions can offer him a big deal. Suh had a huge first contract unlike Watt/Flacco/Kaep/Atkins etc but of course that doesn't factor in (even though it should with a normal non selfish human being).

We'll see what happens and how we replace him if needed. Leaving a number 1 defense that wins this year might be tough to do.

Players leave winning teams all the times.. This won't be the first.

I don't get why wanting more exposure and fame are now the dumbest thing anyone can imagine. Seriously, I know a dozen people that I work with that try out for reality shows every year. Fame is a real thing that motivates people. It also creates greater opportunities throughout their lives. Football makes up a small portion of these players' adult lives. Smart players know they need to do something to set themselves up afterwards.

The bigger the name, the easier it is to get a job as a broadcaster or get investors when starting up a company. Railing against a guy for doing something real world smart (as opposed to football smart) is ridiculous. If NY can realistically offer him greater exposure (I would disagree here since information is everywhere these days) and endorsement dollars (seriously, would anyone here give up 10% or more of their paycheck in order to stay longer in a decaying city/state?) then he SHOULD leave if he's smart.

I actually think he gets more exposure in Detroit, where he's one of just two nationally known players on the team. If he goes to NY or another big city, there's so much more news he'll be competing with and likely more well known faces. As for endorsements, I honestly don't know. He already has national endorsements, so it's all about local places for him. There are certainly more local businesses in NY and a larger local viewership, but is an extra commercial with mom and pop pizza chains out there going to be that big of a difference? I honestly can't say, but it seems that someone who can demand national endorsements doesn't gain a whole lot from local businesses.

To be a " bigger celebrity". Dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Then you've heard the dumbest thing you've ever heard plenty of times. An inordinate number of players in multiple sports have left for New York, because it's the largest city in America and offers the most endorsement deals that add to the on the field income.

It's not even unusual. I'd say it happens at least five times every season.

Michael Jordan made nearly 5 times the money in endorsement deals more than he made on the court. Peyton Manning has done the same. It's the reason you can't flip the channel for 5 minutes and not see a commercial with Peyton.

Guys who play in New York have more access to that kind of exposure, and more opportunities for money. Suh is easily worth $10m a year more in New York than anywhere else, so if the Lions hope to keep him, they are going to have to pay him MORE than $10m a year more than he would get on the open market, because all things being equal, Suh still prefers the bright lights and big city of New York.

Basically, if they sign him for less than $22m a year, they got a huge bargain.. and since there is no way they pay him that much... he's gone.

Have to resign him. Let Fairley walk unless good deal with incentives. Our defense revolves around his play.

Just hope we keep Austin and he doesn't get a head coaching offer

Lions need to call Illitch and ask him to offer Suh 10x what any player makes in salaries to endorse some Pizza Pizza.

Even that won't do it,but maybe he would think a second or two about staying.

Dumbest player to leave a team for fame IMHO was Shaq leaving Orlando to go to LA and pursue acting and rap.

Because then he won 3 championships in a row??? Doesn't sound so dumb to me

He didn't go there to win championships. I lived in Orlando at the time, the potential for championships was way down on his list. He wanted to act and rap, it just so happened the Lakers were good then too and wanted him. He would have gone to the Clippers if Lakers didn't want him, he just wanted out of Orlando's small limelight. Sure he made money from endorsements too, but as an actor and rap star which were his primary motivations....pathetic.

So does Suh want to act and rap? No LA team though. Must be NY, Jets I'm thinking. They need talent.

So a person should honor a team that drafted him vs pursuing what makes him happy? Just because playing basketball wasn't his #1 priority doesn't make him a bad person.

Who cares why someone leaves.

This.

There is no loyalty in sports, on EITHER side......so I have zero problem when guys leave for whatever reason......championships......money......fame......rap career......acting......I don't care.

A great case was Pudge Rodriguez. That guy ONLY came to Detroit because of money. That's it. PERIOD. We lost 119 games the year before he came and had ZERO shot of winning in the next 2 or 3 years. He wasn't going to get much national exposure in Detroit......but.......nobody else offered him what we did.

But he played hard as hell while he was here....recruited others to join (Magglio)....and did what he could over his 4+ years. I respect that.....even if his only attraction to the Tigers was $$$$.

If Suh leaves for WHATEVER reason......see ya. Hope it works out for you wherever you go. But you can't say he's cashed it in the year.....he is playing his ASS off and dominating games.....that's all I care about.

I agree 100%. If I were a player this would be the order of importance for me

1) $$
2) location/city
3) winning

Suh is different though. He already made over 60 million on contract 1 unlike most rookie contracts. How much money does he really need.

Winning and playing on the number 1 defense in the NFL better be the biggest factors for him. Lions will give him a fair offer I'm sure.

Wanting to be the highest paid defensive player or being in a big market (where he already gets a ton of exposure just being a stud player in the NFL) just a little selfish. Top 5 highest paid defenders is about right for him.
