Supreme Court strikes down same-sex marriage bans

Since the instances of inter-family marriage would be extremely rare, few if any would know about it, except for perhaps some of those who would oppose it b/c they are family, friends, associates, and/or relatives..so..no.

Consanguineous marriages are commonplace in parts of Africa, Asia and India. The notion makes me queasy. Am I a "Consanguineous-phobe?" Are you?

It won't, and you are comparing a bowl of apples to an orange grove.

I made my position on it upthread.

Love between siblings very, very, very rarely would escalate to marriage.

so...in your mind it is ok to deny some people the right to marry because it would rarely happen. Got it. It's not discrimination if you do it to a small group.

My younger sister was and still is stunningly attractive. In her heyday she was almost a clone of Jacklyn Smith, but even prettier. She once placed runner-up in the Miss Michigan pageant.

I used to take her and her two beautiful girlfriends out to discotheques on weekends. It was like my very own version of" "Charlie's Angels", but IRL. Guys used to yell "You're lucky!!" to me when I went out with her/them.

My sister was hit on almost constantly in these bars, and she would tell those who became too persistent or annoying that I was her bf.

I love my sister with all of my heart, and I know that she loves me too, but I would never and have never even considered "marrying" her.

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt had a consanguineous marriage.

Fifth cousins once removed.

And I realize you are not the same as every other Catholic/Christian. However, you are spouting off the stereotypical paranoia that I've seen. Also, it's pretty clear that political and social beliefs have changed drastically over the years so of course you wouldn't lump me with MMOH. I see you repeating the typical christian bigot talking points, so yes...i put you with them on that issue.

My point was not that people are hateful or mean. It is that you people (theists) are already turning on yourselves, persecuting each other for having different opinions on the subject. You cry about potentional persecution from pro lgbt people, but the real threat is from within.

Differentiating between theists and pro lgbt people in this way is doesn't seem right. It's not explicit, but it is implied. People don't fit in nice boxes like that. Atheists are a minority among lgbt people.

And? I understand that. I said theists are turning on each other.

Funny. My son is 8. I actually ran into this issue after he saw two guys kissing on TV a few days ago.

Him: A look of confusion.

Me: "What's wrong?"

Him: "I don't like to see kissing." - This is true. He doesn't even watch a boy and girl kiss.

Me: "You look confused"

Him: "They were both boys."

Me: "And? Do you think that boys shouldn't kiss?"

Him: "I don't want to kiss any boys."

Me: Jokingly I said, "But girls???"

Him: Turning red and doing the embarrassed face, "NO!"

That's when I asked him if he knew what "gay" meant. He said no and I calmly explained that some boys liked to kiss other boys and sometimes they would fall in love. The same with two girls.

Him: "And then they get married?"

Me: "Actually, that's why those two men were kissing. They were just told that they were able to get married."

Him: "Okay." And then he ran off to play Minecraft. And yesterday, we were in the mall and he saw two girls holding hands. When we left, he asked me if they were gay. I said yes, probably, but maybe they were just friends because sometimes girls will do that. Again, he said "Okay" and that was that.

It's a pretty simple thing if you have a brain.

And no, I won't be responding anymore to your comparison to incest. You are equating two very different things to push forward your agenda and it's not going to work.

Can't believe he is 8 already and freaking both of my kids have now graduated from High school... Seems like yesterday you started this board...

You said more than that, and I said differentiating between theists and pro lgbt people in that way is doesn't seem right. Obviously, theists oppose each other and that's the bulk of the opposition because that's the bulk of the people.

So "and?" what?

It's insane, man. Third grade in August. And he's already a better student than I ever was. Way ahead of national average in both math and reading. Those are the only subjects tested so far, but I'm proud. It's fun watching our kids outdo us.

Yeah, Catholics usually aren't as extreme as the Fundamentalist Christians.

Although, the Opus Dei types are.

this is more like tLiar's people. or jdilco's.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not an Opus Dei follower but I know many who are. They don't preach hate in any way, shape or form. It's about a greater level of devotion to the faith.

You do so by convenient error.

Bigot: "intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself."

or ... "stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own."

Intolerance: "unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one's own."

I could easily accuse you of the same, but I don't, because it is a tactic to end discussion. And that's the aim of many who support same-sex "marriages." Call it paranoia if you want when I claim that this is the mere continuation of the transformation of our society into one that is less tolerant and accepting rather than more so.

I actually put myself in this camp, and I don't see you in it:

Tolerance: the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with.

You are late to the party. That has been going on from the moment Christ uttered "it is finished." Yet the Church He established is still here.

who were the "Separationists?" Maybe they deserved to be called those names, and she wasn't that far off. I dunno. This squabble was a while ago.

The Society of Separationists is a pretty well known organization founded by Madelyn Murray O'Hair, who made news back in her day for bringing a number of lawsuits, primarily against public schools, who were making prayer in schools mandatory, and to get other types of religious symbols out of public institutions.

She was on TV a lot back in the '60s and '70s.

She died in 1995, and went straight to Hell, no doubt.

I didn't know the bitch had such a foul mouth though.

Although I've read that Phil Donahue thought she was a pig, and she mocked him off camera when she did his show because even though he was a big lefty, he was a pretty devout follower of his religion, which is (or was at the time, and probably still is) Catholic.

I don't see Phil on TV much anymore.

I guess he's still married to...um....what's that girl's name again?

Interesting that "recency" can be conveniently applied when it's helpful to minimize invective language.

maybe in the US they're not as extreme, but they're basically as Right Wing as you can get in the Catholic church internationally, no?

also, maybe I'm attributing actions of a few members to the whole; I assumed they were in lock-step organizationally like the Jesuits, but maybe they're more like a college frat, where you have the drunk guy, the stoner, the ladies man, the slob, the preppy guy, etc. and they're all connected in name only.
