It was a deathbed appeal from an AZ player in the 1920s to the coach ?Pop? McKale. ?Tell the boys to Bear Down.? Two years before the Gipper, which matters how, I don?t know.

Knute Rockne ever verify that George Gipp actually had said that?

Kind of sounds like something a Hollywood screenwriter might?ve come up with.

I'd be skeptical of most "death bed" utterances, and famous last words, especially when those still living can profit or use them in some way (such as creating an inspirational story to help a lackluster football program)
 
people on their deathbed are often delusional right? Heart failing, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and blood sugar all low...

The Arizona guy was probably ranting about the oppressive desert heat ("it's unbearable") or something like that, and they figured, "nah, let's go with 'Bear Down.'"
