The annual Way to early but not really 2021 Draft Thread!

Lol you dont even know who the coach is going to be. This is why lions fans suck so much

Cant wait to see people blame Wilson or Fields for losing a game and two throws Lions fans think somebody was open when they dont observe the pressur or progrrssions. Then completely ignore injurirs, bad defense and bullshit unlucky fumbles
I rather blame a cheaper younger QB than an expensive old fart.

that's pretty funny. Kind of Lionsque

looking at the overall standings, the Lions currently would have the 13th pick but have the 4th worst point differential. They are definitely the 4th worst team.

Thats the concern right now looking ahead for the lions. I dont think you can go wrong with a new GM. The one we had was brutal. But then he picks a new coach. He also has a big QB decision. Its a fair decision....but he needs to get a great return for it to make sense. All things considered you could have a new gm, new coach, new QB and end up being the Jets very quickly if the right decisions arent made.

5 win team with our ELITE QB. A rookie QB and a couple defensive picks arent going to make you a better team. That would just be the start. Way too many holes on this roster. New GM has ALOT of work to do.

Keep the elite QB and the new GM makes good defensive and run game picks in FA/draft and the correct decision on the WRs as well. You keep Stafford and you aren't using a 1st on a QB. And that way you win quicker. Plenty of picks with Stafford on the roster and plenty of cap space. Don't want to go wild in FA either spending money (that doesn't really work out too well). It's always about the draft.

Trade Stafford for a 1st only would be bad. Use the early one on QB (instead of defensive stud early) and then a later 1st on defense (so the defense addition might not be as good). A 1st and a 2nd for Stafford, well its risky. Is that second round pick really worth taking a gamble on a QB and 10 million more in cap space (really 6.3 since other 1st rounder will take up that cap space) and 23 million in 2022? If you are going to pick Shelton, Jessie James and Nick Williams and Trufant and Vaitai with that extra cap space then it really doesn't matter. As you can see, you can add FAs with Stafford on the roster with a big cap number. Just pick the right guys

What if they added 2020 FAs
Shaq Lawson for 10 per instead of Collins
And Linval Joseph for 8.5 per instead of Vaitai 9 per
And Jack Conklin 14 per instead of Trufant/Amendola resign
Josh Norman for 6 per instead of 5 per from Nick Williams
3 per for Darby instead of 4 per for Shelton
Draft Simmons or Brown over Okudah

There are ways to build if you pick the right guys
Collins was solid but Patricia had Quinn pick some problems over the years in Round 2 and FA

And what if KG and Flowers never got hurt

A Stafford trade isn't necessary for a rebuild on defense quickly

So how can you blame Quinn then if his hands are tied.
Also you have no clue if they would or wouldn't come here for that price.
Also Patricias scheme fit is a big thing
And they wanted the Patriots culture fit so Shelton, Harmon, Collins are added. The last two are solid to good players. Shelton started well then battled injuries and stunk then put on IR

The point is, which you clearly missed, is the Lions have the cap space to add big dollar free agents with Stafford on the roster. Then you can win now with Stafford instead of having to take a risk and develop a rookie QB. A rookie QB that will fail hard if he gets no run support or defensive support.

yes...and a lot of them went the other way for TDs

Stafford has 23 pick sixes which is tied or 7th all time.

you don't have to take a QB with either first. They can build the team, sign a cheap vet and look for a QB to develop or look for one in 2022.

Also, you are talking about the next 2 years with Matt. He is going to want $35-40M a year when his contract is up. Then you have an aging vet with a top 5 contract.

The Lions have almost no talent. They need 7 new starters on D and probably 5 on the offensive side of the ball. They don't have a single "difference maker" on either side of the ball...especially on the defensive side.

They have one difference maker. His name is Matthew Stafford and you are trying to get rid of him.

And Flowers is a really really good player. Let's see who they can add in FA/draft to build.

Flowers, Hand, Okudah, Coleman. Build around that with 7 new starters. Walker probably stays on a cheap final year too but he needs to get back to 2018/2019 form in a hurry. Hand needs to stay healthy but that may not happen. AO sticks around too as depth on cheap contract. Tavai and Harris are cheap but they suck and Tavai won't fit the new scheme most likely.

Offense is in really good shape but 3 WRs are FAs. Need to figure that out. Marvin back cheap in an option. Figure out the right price for KG. Or hit the FA market. Good WR class again too.

Oline they could roll with Decker, Jackson, Ragnow, Vaitai, Crosby again. That is a solid starting Oline especially if Vaitai (health) and Jackson year 2 improve. Dahl/Stenberg as depth. Add a good young tackle (depth and Crosby about to be a FA). You can win with that Oline and a cheap power back to pair with Swift and KJ again.

FA can solve some, Draft can solve some. We can get 10 new starters and compete in 2021 with Stafford.

Other option is to blow it all up including QB and compete in 3 years

Because the guys he did get suck, and his drafts suck. Mayhew had it bad to but by comparison he was a FA guru.

I don't think Stafford is a difference maker. If he were truly a difference maker they would have had some success over the past 12 years. A difference maker at the QB position can carry an average team to the playoffs. He hasn't done that. Don't get me wrong...he is an above average QB, but certainly not a difference maker.

Other than not all of these players would sign here it?s a really good plan for one season where the Lions go 9-7 and may or not make the playoffs.

I have to wonder why anyone would want to be a head coach here. Money I guess.

There are only 32 NFL teams and more than 32 coaches that want to be a head coach in the NFL. Being the head coach of the 32nd best NFL franchise is still a great job.

Its a money job. And ego, they think they can be the one to turn it around finally.

If we move on from Stafford, I’d like to trade up for Fields. If we keep Stafford, best player on the board. Too many holes to fill and not enough talent on the roster to focus on one side of the ball or position.
