2018 NFL draft: Lions use final pick on San Diego State fullback Nick Bawden.

The Lions had eliminated the fullback under Jim Bob Cooter in recent years, but are amidst a total overhaul of their run game. They drafted tailback Kerryon Johnson in the second round, signed LeGarrette Blount in free agency and hired Jeff Davidson to retool the blocking concepts.

Everything's going to be different in 2018. And that includes bringing back the fullback.

The moves are in reaction to Detroit falling back into last place in rushing for the second time in three years. They were especially bad in short-yardage situations, too, moving the chains just 45 percent of the time on third- and fourth-and short. That was worst in the league.

They also had 27 percent of their runs dropped behind the line of scrimmage, which was 31st.

Some of that was on the blocking, of course, and general manager Bob Quinn tried to address that by adding prized interior lineman Frank Ragnow in the first round of the draft. But a lack of physicality in the backfield hurt too.

So the Lions signed Blount, who remains one of the best power backs in the league. And now they've brought back the fullback to help protect him.

Lead blocker, draft follower: Penny, who rushed for 2,248 yards with Bawden helping lead the way, was drafted 27th overall by the Seattle Seahawks. That was 2,201 more yards gained in his career than by Bawden, who was drafted 210 picks after Penny.

Analysts take: An unidentified scout from Bobmcginnfootball.com: “He’s a little bit of a throwback. Just a tough guy. Also has some skill out of the backfield. He’s really tough.”

Mike O’Hara’s take: “The Lions eliminated the fullback from the offense last year. Drafting Bawden means they’re either returning the fullback to the offense, or they like Bawden’s toughness enough to think he can help on special teams, or perhaps learn another position. Time will tell.”

Tim Twentyman’s take: “Bob Quinn really wasn’t kidding when he said he wanted to bolster the run game. The team added an interior offensive lineman, running back and now fullback. The Lions didn’t have a fullback on the roster after releasing Michael Burton last season. The seventh round is a good spot to fill a position of need that fits the value in this case. Bawden led the way for the nation’s top two rushers in 2016 and 2017.”

Rather than employing a linebacker who has never done the job, the Lions have chosen the path of employing a qualified professional. The mistakes of the past are being rectified. Jeff Davidson has been brought in to replace Prince. The team has signed and drafted a plethora of offensive linemen and running backs.

The Detroit Lions have learned that while the NFL is a passing league, the good teams can run the ball when they have to. Denial of comeback opportunities matters. Winning the time of possession battle matters. Limiting the number of snaps that your 300 lb defensive linemen have to play in a season matters. The team cannot rely on Matthew Stafford to drag them kicking and screaming to every victory.

It’s clear that the Detroit Lions want to be a tough-nose rushing team in 2018. That, after struggling in short-yardage situations last season. Beefing up their offensive line, adding tough runners like LeGarrette Blount and Kerryon Johnson plus a fullback in Nick Bawden should vastly improve what was one of the worst areas on the team last season.

I suddenly remembered that DaShawn isn't the first DE named Hand who will/has played for the Lions:

Larry Hand was playing DE/DT for the Lions back when I first started following/watching the Lions in '70.

If the run game still sucks cause cooter blows then this draft is a solid D.

If we lose a bunch of games cause we can't get to the qb.... draft is a D-

Fixing the run game doesn't necessarily translate into wins.... We win double digit games, make the playoffs and win a game...feel free to bookmark all my negative draft comments and make me eat crow. I bet were still a bottom half run team.

GTFO Mr. Negative!!!!!!!!!

I like it! I hate giving up a 3rd next year but Hand at one time was the top player in high school. He almost went to Michigan so I followed him a bit.

And didn't live up to it at Alabama. He was a disappoint in college. Also had a DUI and something else.. He's probably a guy who might take a couple years to figure it out.

Quinn explaining the change in Lions' defense: Old defensive front was very much one-gap, very much get up the field. This year will be much more conscious of technique, holding gaps ... Quinn said Lions are a mix of 1- and 2-gap on defense.
In the Year of Our Lord 2018, the Lions will no longer run Jim Schwartz's defense.
Dave Birkett

Who fkn cares?! lol

Graded out (by people that know wtf they're not talking about) as an ELITE Interior OLineman. No sacks given up in his collegiate career, wins in the run game, played against great competition.

We drafted a beast!! STFU
