The Official Minnesota vs ][V][ichigan Game Thread

I'm not talking about the difference between osu and msu. And I think you're taking this too literally and being far too nit picky. I interpreted Byco's original statement as a comment on the overall sportsmanship of MSU fans with respect to uofm - not just the number that want to see uofm falter. There are plenty of ways to express unsportsmanlike behavior among rivals, whether it's arrogant disdain or an express desire to see the other fail, or taunting opposing fans, etc. Said differently, there are plenty of ways to be a "jerk" and both fan bases have those people in equal measure - or at least close enough.

Then you misinterpreted. This is the actual post you responded to with your 'equal measure' thing:

I have expressed that I have no interest in MSU other than when it plays Michigan. My experience is that MSU fans as a general rule delight in seeing Michigan falter. That is the ethos I have perceived.

Jerks and taunting had nothing to do with it. It was about MSU fans enjoying seeing Michigan lose. Since you've held the wrong interpretation through this thread, you probably have the wrong impression of what I've been saying.

I don't see anything wrong with enjoying a rival losing. I'd assume the same thing goes on between Auburn and Bama fans, Florida and FSU, etc. When you watch a game and take a rooting interest, you either cheer for a team that you like or against one that you don't. I assume that the majority on this board cheer against MSU and OSU, that's fine, that's what a rivalry is. Of course there's Byco's take on the matter where he makes it a priority to point out his indifference towards MSU, which is simply being dismissive with the intent of irritating MSU fans, that's fine too, fair game.

I think two things have made the UM-MSU relationship more acrimonious: 1.) the internet message board, which gives greater voice, visibility and persistence to the "Cedar Village" element of MSU's fanbase, and 2.) Mark Dantonio.

prior to 2000, I think there were enough ties between the programs at higher levels that it was run of the mill rivalry stuff.

I know what I was replying to. Maybe I did misinterpret it, but how do you know? Maybe you're taking it too literally and you're the one misinterpreting.

And what if I am misinterpreting? My point still stands - there are a lot of unsportsmanlike fans in each fan base that are just looking for a reason to hate everything about the other team. And it's probably roughly equal.

Wow, even turd is able to overcome his bias to see that it's clearly MSU fan's that have made the rivalry more acrimonious. Amazing, eh Gulo?

Is this trolling, or are you actually hoping to argue over whose fault it is that you failed to understand what I posted?

I don't care. Blame me for being too literal. Either way, it should be clear now.

Different point:

I agree with MC that Dantonio is in part to blame for there being something different between Spartans, and normal rival fan bases. I can't think of any other coach that's said anything like his "You can only be diplomatic for so long" thing.

I can't either. In the pantheon of football coaches who let other teams get to them, I can only think of Bielema. It's a bush league mentality; not common in the Big Ten.

No it's not trolling and I'm not arguing over failing to understand you - i'm arguing that you took Byco's post too literally and because of it, you misunderstood my point.

As for blaming Dantonio for this increased acrimony in the rivalry, that's clearly an overreaction due to a pro-uofm bias. Nothing MD has done is all that inflammatory. None of it the great insult some uofm fans have made it out to be. The same can be said for most of what MSU fans are saying about Harbaugh. But like I said, some people on one side of the rivalry are just looking for a reason to hate everything about the other side. And I don't think there's any real increase in acrimony anyway. Maybe you're just noticing uofm fans more engaged in the rivalry - part of what you pointed out with respect to the cyclical ups and downs based on who is winning games.

I think it's actually bad for the things we think are good about sports and rivalry. Good sportmanship requires respect. Disrespecting your opponent is bad, but only slightly less bad is pitching a story about how disrespectful your opponents are. It gives all the bad sports out there an excuse to be bad sports.

It's one thing to do it in the locker room, but Dontonio does it with the press.

Going back to game

Coach zordich told us at lunch that they have submitted to B iG Ten the penalty call on the double fair catch call. They aren't disputing it but want clarification

Thomas ran away from The player who originally called fair catch

LOL

Joe Bolden tied for the team lead in tackles in the Minnesota game the Ross with 9..
I guess he is pretty decent..

It's pretty clear that it took an unprecedented miracle for state to beat Harbaugh and that going forward, things will be very different in terms of outcome.

sorry sbee

fuck you, bitch
The battle cry of Michigan football

We'll beat you next year!

I guess that's all you can say when you've lost 7 of 8 to msu and 10 of 11 to osu.

68–35–5 ... even after winning seven of eight. .338 WP for MSU. Outstanding. Just need to win the next 33 straight to even the series.

921 - 332 - 38

It's typical that you try to argue that you're going to win the future, then pivot to your record including the leather helmet era. You really can't argue about the present, since you lost....again. that's what you've been reduced to.

Pfffft. Ha.

Get out of here with that lame-ass trolling. Do you have any idea how great it is to be a Michigan fan this year?

We're actually only 6 games below .500 since 1950 when MSU joined the big ten. Michigan was a juggernaut back before television, you dominated the series before we were in the big ten and we played the overwhelming majority of games in Ann Arbor. it's relatively close since then.

It's just a response to napoleon calling me a bitch and telling me to fuck off.
