The Official MTSU vs ][V][ichigan Game Thread

Except for the fact that it hasn't led to a conference title in 15 years. Maybe more. Who gives a shit at this point.

Yeah it must be fun being a fan of some other big ten schools then us. Like Ohio st, MSU, Penn st, Wisconsin, Northwestern. Sure would be nice to make it to Indy once lol .

Jaylen Kelly-Powell who is a borderline starter gets burned. He was the starter until Thomas came back from illness

But it has its place. Like when the ball is inside the 1.

That's all good and well, but every team that's ever played football knows how to line up and say "push as hard as you can, we're going to run the biggest body we have as fast as possible right into the middle of the line to pick up a few inches". The issue is that this team has been far too one-dimensional in those situations for years and that's the only trick they have for them. They have got to stop pissing away opportunities to try another approach in short yardage situations. If for no other reason than to give their opponents something else to think about when they want to get into those situations.

This team knows that they are there to get paid to get an ass whipping. Stop taking your foot off the gas in the third quarter. Use it to get your team experience with the play book. I hate the whole "don't show more than you have to" approach. Just fucking play your game and be really good at executing it. OSU hasn't done anything against Michigan that they hadn't done 1000 times before, they still shred the defense because they're really fucking good at what they do.

Well that seems to me to be a little unimpressive and anti-climatic.

But Michigan wins so woo hoo! Michigan wins!

Did anyone else think the QBs were a bit greedy with the read options? Seemed like several times the RBs had a clear path to run but then either McCaffrey or Patterson took it back at the last second. Couple times they even dropped it.

I get that they can run but I'd much rather see Charbonnet or the other boys in the open field.

Why is Harbaugh not wearing his spectacles?

He’s gotta make up his mind.

Is he Clark Kent?

Or is he Superman?

I know they're up big in the 4th but run your fucking offense. This is the shit that hurt them last year. Beat the shit out of inferior teams all year playing it safe, then play a team with equal talent and have no experience with 75% of your play book. Get the goddamn game reps now!

I agree.

I also don't see what's so great about this offense.

I've heard the same line "Everybody runs it these days, about time we got with the scene" etc. etc. etc.

Well, great so, everyone knows how to fucking defend it, and plays it every week!

And to bphillips point above, if we're not opening up the playbook, we're not running these plays to get experienced running them. And from the looks of how sloppy we are, we need reps more than anything else. Keeping your playbook under wraps doesn't matter if you run it like shit when you open it up.

I guess at least this is a better result than last year, when we looked awful in Game 1, and lost to ND. We turned it around quick then, and had a nice win streak going (until we entered the twilight zone).

I also hope we see less Ronnie Bell going forward. Maybe with DPJ back?

Yes. Not only on keeping it, but getting to greedy for yards, instead of going down or sliding after a decent pickup. No need to stretch and try to make things happen in a game like this, you're just going to fumble or get hurt.

shouldn't need to play hero ball to gain yards when we're running an offense that's predicated on efficient passing.

Our routes are similar to Bama's. I see that. The difference today was patience by the quarterbacks, but at the same time not having all day like Bama always gives their guy. MTSU was blitzing all day and it seemed like we weren't ready for that. Way too much pressure because of the routes called. If this is what teams are going to do, call the appropriate quick slants like we did a couple times on the play fakes. This offense can be dangerous, but they need to be patient like Bama and not look for the homerun every play. To be clear I think Shea looks for the homerun ball 1st before hitting the clear open guy like Tagavaloia does. That is why Tagavaloia is usually 14 of 16 to start his games. He'll scan too long and end up eating it.

Ronnie Bell reminds me of Steve Breaston's freshman year. Breaston was so fast, but looked so damn awkward because his body couldnt keep up with his feet. He fell down a lot. Bell just looks awkward without the speed. He was suppose to be an agile hands guy. I'm not seeing it.

I think most of the times you saw Ronnie Bell tonight would've been DJP otherwise. Seemed like all the routes and roles he would play.

Everyone runs it because it's really hard to defend. It gets your best players in positions to make explosive plays. It consistently puts the opposing LBs in conflict and that will allow for many chunk plays this season. This offense will be awesome. Just need to iron out the kinks and get Runyan and DPJ healthy.

I agree that holding back the playbook is borderline idiotic. You need game reps and the more you put on film, the more the opposition has to prepare for. I'd much rather make opposing DCs miserable by forcing them to go over a shitload of film and having them still second guessing themselves bc we have so many options out of each of our different offensive sets.
