The truth behind the Lions switch to AM

I'm pretty sure that the radio station pays the Lions for the right to be the "flagship station"...not the other way around.

Nope, not actually accurate. It's a two-way street.

The Lions give additional access, and it become the outlet for the "official" interviews players are required to do.

But the Lions pay for advertising on the station as a return on that support.

Radio stations and TV stations actually get a pretty hefty stipend for being the official station.

And again, no one should pay for advertising to an opinion based network that trashes their product. It's just stupid business to do so.

Even the idea that fans won't turn away and the Lions won't lose business because of the things being said... anyone remember the blackout games the Lions used to have? When a radio personality uses their pulpit to tell fans to boycott games, yep... fans walk away in enough mass to damage the team's finances. It has happened, it is happening, and it will happen again.

No business owner is stupid enough to pay the station doing it.

That's the problem Mitch. It's not going to be real Lions talk. It's going to be slappy hour.

Huge difference between discussing the actual problems of the team on the field and encouraging fans to try to financially cripple the team to force a sale.

Lots of struggling teams have TV and Radio shows that discuss what they are going through and what they need to improve. No reason to pay these guys to damage your product in the public eye on top of it.

It's not the same thing.

I don't think they're going to sell. I think it stays with the Fords. Word is that the girls want to keep the football team in the family still.
Personally, i wouldn't mind a change of ownership, but thats unlikely because of the loss of money if they do so. Lets be honest though, the old man treated this team as a hobby. The way Martha is running things are clarifying that woth every move SHE makes. It seems that she cares about this football team and maybe it will be her wish to keep it in the family to someone that cares as well....
I don't think she really cares at the end of the day. She is selling her care in the media. My point is this... If she really cares, she should of selected a viable President.

Instead, she selected a family friend who runs their billion dollar estates asset. The president oversees the management and strategic planning of each department within the organization. They should be the driving force behind the rebuilding and rebranding of the franchise, bringing long-overdue stability to this failing organization. As fans, we deserve a remarkable transformation, both on and off the field.

Now, do you think she did this with her selection? I don't. This is why I think it's media masturbation, just like her husband did. We will never win with this circus organization.

Valenti is a tool. Thank God for XM radio.

I have read his name mentioned here. After listening to him in the link, I agree more than not.

Big reason I haven't listened to any of that stuff on the radio is because of that kind of drivel. Alot is done to boost ratings. If the station wanted the Lions, with money out of this equation, the station could have gotten rid of Valenti. By not doing that, speaks volumes.

My XM is always on Blues, Jazz, Rock, and Tigers baseball.

I agree mostly with Valenti on this issue, I just never cared for him. He has said some pretty bad things about real good people in the past. Keenist is not one of them people either, that guy has no idea what he is doing either.

If I have lived where you lived, I would be a Patriots fan all the way. Actually, I am following them now. I have thrown in the towel on the Lions. That Prez hiring did me in, I jumped off the ledge Ron.

Great job explaing things ink. I'm not a Valenti fan but he's good at what he does. His response was great and its a bit embarrassing for the Lions...but both parties are right in this case. Valenti should continue to tell the Lions to F off and the Lions shouldn't do business with them.

There you go manchild, you just perfectly summarized and overly long thread on a non-issue.

97.1 should be as harsh on the Lions as they want and give their opinions any way they want.

The Lions should turn their focus to a station that will be more friendly to their business interests.

End of story.

I'm honestly not sure what the Lions were expecting anyway. Surely they've had contract renewals with 97.1 within the last 5-7 years? It's not like anything is different now than it was back then.

Different owner bud. Old Man Ford would put up with a lot. Martha won't.

She seems like a "take no shit" old broad to me. And why not? She's the owner. If she doesn't like what's going on, heads will roll and changes will be made.

It sounds like the PR people were always complaining. So I take it Old Man Ford just didn't care?

I think he cared deeply, but just didn't axe people the way he should have.

His loyalty kept the team in Detroit even during an economic collapse when he could have bailed. He didn't.

That same loyalty lead to a lot of long stretches of bad teams.

Valenti can f off and die and the world would be better off. He is a cheap Stern-esque POS. I listened to him one time and will never again. WXYZ would be better off firing him.

Anyone has the right to be critical of the Lions or any team. Valenti is just a fucking waste of time to listen to. Seriously, he needs to be fired before I will even do WXYZ the privilege of clicking on their website again.

People like Valenti or Stern wouldn't be on the radio / TV if others didn't like them. As much as I can't stand either, plus all the reality TV shows.. They're still on because people watch them. Stupid people but I regress..

Hate sells. If you ever watched the Howard Stern movie they sum it up perfectly when they are discussing his ratings. His own station is trying to fire him but can't understand why he keeps getting ratings. They say they average Stern lover listen for 1.5 hours on average. Biggest reason they tune in and listen...to hear what he says next. The average Stern hater listens for 2.5 hours. Biggest reason they tune in to listen...to hear what he says next.

I feel sorry for those people but I'm here in a sports forum, they probably think the same about me.

I'd argue we're better off here.

Here we can share our own angry opinions, not be spoon-fed someone else's angry opinions.

We think for ourselves, because we're every bit as much the asshole Valenti is.

Solid point.
