Tigers 2019 Spring Training Thread

Does anyone think Miggy can hit 20 home runs any more? Not sure I do.

I think he still can, provided he plays a full season, which is a big question mark given his age and history. It seems like nagging injuries have affected his swing, but if time off has been good for him then I'm excited to see if he can bounce back.

If on, there is absolutely no reason for opposing pitchers to pitch to him. That by itself will reduce the number of HRs.

I'll assume Castellanos will bat behind him giving less reasons for opposing pitchers to pitch around him.

He'll get a lot of slack unless he's .900+OPS (more like .950OPS) just because he's making all that money.

Intentional Walks (A sign that they are being pitched around)

2009 = M. Cabrera 14, C. Granderson 4

2010 = M. Cabrera 32, B. Boesch 5

2011 = M. Cabrera 22, A. Avila 9

2012 = P. Fielder 18, M. Cabrera 17

2013 = M. Cabrera 19. V. Martinez 10

2014 = V. Martinez 28, M. Cabrera 10

2015 = M. Cabrera 15, V. Martinez 8

2016 = M. Cabrera 15, V. Martinez 8

2017 = M. Cabrera 6, J.D. Martinez 5

2018 = N. Castellanos 5, V. Martinez 4

Career High IBB by Player:
**BOLD = CURRENT TIGERS**

M. Cabrera = 32
P. Fielder = 32
V. Martinez = 28

N. Cash = 19
K. Gibson = 16
B. Freehan = 15
D. Evans = 14
J. Mercer = 13
A. Kaline = 12
W. Horton = 11
J.D. Martinez = 11
T. Hunter = 10

C. Lemon = 9
L. Whitaker = 9
J. Upton = 9
J. Northrup = 9
A. Avila = 9
Y. Cespedes = 8
A. Trammell = 8
D. McAuliffe = 8
M. Stanley = 8
L. Parrish = 7
D. Wert = 7
G. Brown = 6
L. Herndon = 6
J. Peralta = 6

N. Castellanos = 5
A. Jackson = 4
R. Oyler = 4
T. Brookens = 3
O. Infante = 3
J. Harrison = 2
I. Kinsler = 2
J. Iglesias = 2
C. Maybin = 2
J. Candelario = 1
N. Goodwin = 1
M. Mahtook = 1
J. Hicks = 0
J. Jones = 0
A. Gose = 0
J. McCann = 0

Mercer traditionally batted 8th in the NL, and they walked him to get to the pitcher.

If you actually think a pitcher is going to pitch to Cabrera because Castellanos is hitting behind him, then I think you are overvaluing Castellanos.

And yes, there is a correlation between IBB and whether a pitcher will pitch to someone. When Cabrera had 32 IBB in a season, the next on the team was Boesch. When he had V. Martinez, when he was good, hitting behind him, he still had high IBB, just not as many.

TOP 5 for 2018

1. M. Trout 25
2. K. Schwarber 20
3. M. Machado 18
4. M. Carpenter 17
5. B. Harper 16

I think you are overvaluing Cabrera if you think a pitcher is still afraid of him. My guess is teams will be equally "afraid" of both

You missed out here. I said "if on". Meaning, if he returns to even a modest resemblance to himself, assuming some age regression.

Assuming that, then there is virtually no one other than probably Stewart who could offer him some semblance of "protection" and even that is an unknown. No one is afraid to pitch to Castellanos, certainly not a Righthanded pitcher. Righthander will pitch around Cabrera to pitch to Castellanos. A lefty will have to choose his poison, but probably will still choose Castellanos.

The chance is slim. Imo, I believe Nick hits more home runs than Cabrera this season. I don't think he has the power or the gap hitting, esp. to right field anymore. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see it.

I hope Miggy sets a record for free passes. That would mean 1, he’s likely crushing the ball and 2, we’re actually in games lol

ahh...I guess I did miss your caveat.

I'm assuming that he will not go back in time to when he was 33. I'm assuming he will be the 36 year old version which will more likely be similar to his past 2 seasons.

But the one thing I do know for the money he's making he better be in MVP consideration.

In the last 10 years, his lowest OBP was not last year, but 2017 at .329. He has maintained an above .390 OBP for 8 of the last 10 years. Aside from the last 2 years, where it was documented that he was hurt, he had not had a slugging of under .500 since his rookie season.

His "hurt" .843 OPS for 2018 was just slightly below the "healthy" Castellanos' .854 OPS. And yet, some embrace Castellanos, but belittle Miguel. I don't get it. I guess I am negative towards every player.

If he is "on" (meaning healthy), and even with age regression, there should be no reason for high .800s or into the .900s OPS, cynicism aside.

I'm not one of those that embrace Nick...I was really hoping somebody would have traded for him at the trade deadline last year.

My point is that I see no reason to believe that Miggy will be feared by anybody this year.

.

It's because one is 36 and the other isn't.
