Let?s cut through the nonsense here. The Detroit Tigers owner Chris Ilitch absolutely can afford Carlos Correa, especially when you consider Miguel Cabrera is off the books in two years, and when you consider the Tigers increased TV revenue. If they don?t sign him, it?s because they made a choice.

Side note: Carlos Correa would cost less than the total City of Detroit taxpayer dollars the Ilitches begged for to build LCA (nice arena) and District Detroit (nice renderings).

If the Tigers miss out on Carlos Correa because of cost, then Chris Ilitch should sell the team. End of story. Cost is not an issue.

And here?s the kicker: For all that Mike Ilitch was willing to do for his baseball team ? and he spent to the point where his team often operated at a deficit in its 2006-14 heyday ? Carlos Correa might just trump any signing that he ever green-lighted.

Look, you can sign Semien or Story and you?ll have yourself a very nice player. But Correa can become your franchise player offensively and defensively. Again, it?s their choice.

Niko Goodrum didn?t have to lose his spot if you?re going to sign anyone other than Carlos Correa or Corey Seager

Nobody has been more relentlessly critical and mocking of Chris Illitch and Al Avila than me..but the rumor that they will not spend 300M on Carlos Correa..is just blatant bullshit..I'd speculate they offered him more than that already..

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

This week, former Tiger Justin Verlander signed a contract to return to the Houston Astros. He will earn $25 million this year and if he so chooses, will earn another $25 mill next year as well. He will be 39 in a few short months and this contract could take him just months shy of age 41. He has expressed a desire to pitch until he is 45.

JV has only pitched 6 innings since 2019 during his former contract extension with Houston in which he earned $66 mill. He had Tommy John surgery during this time.

In Detroit, JV was sidelined for extensive periods with 2 major injuries to his core muscles and triceps.

In a pitching preview 10 days ago, Verlander was throwing 94-97 MPH. He last threw a complete season in 2019.

JV remains a Tiger fan favorite and former franchise face. The Tigers did attend his pitching showcase but it was reported that there was not serious interest.

If it were up to you, would you have offered JV a 2-year $50 million contract? Should he have returned as part of a reunion for fans? Do you feel that he could have been an important part of rebuilding this team to contention status?

Or is there too much risk involved? Is the contract too expensive? Or have the Tigers moved on and now need to be focused on other priorities?

What say you, fans?

Should the Tigers have made a 2-year $50 mill offer to Justin Verlander?

1. Yes

2. No

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

There are multiple reports that the Tigers are interested in adding an outfielder either via trade or free agency. This is a new ? and rather surprising ? addition to their stated list of 2 starting pitchers, a catcher and shortstop.

Currently, the Tigers have Akil Baddoo, Daz Cameron, Robbie Grossman (1 year left on his contract), Derek Hill and Victor Reyes. Riley Greene is expected to be promoted to Detroit at some point this year. Potentially, he could even make the Opening Day roster.

The Tigers could have 6 outfielders available when most teams have 4-5.
So why are they looking to add even more? What do you believe is the team?s strategy for adding yet another one?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

Why do you believe the Tigers want to add a new outfielder?

1. They need to improve defensive stats.

2. They don?t believe 1-2 of the current roster will perform well enough.

3. They are adding depth to help mitigate injuries.

4. They could be trading 1 or more OFers.

Given that the Tigers are still looking for a SS, Outfielder and at least 1 more starting pitcher, it never made sense for them to throw $300+ mill at just 1 player - Carlos Correa.

They have already added a catcher and SP for app. $23 mill. Arb eligible players are expected to add another $22 mill (app.) to the payroll.
That's $45 mill more than last year with still 3+ more players needing to be signed.

Which is why the rumors that the Tigers are focusing on Marcus Semien and Javier Baez make more sense. Signing the top SS isn't logical when there's at least 2 other gaping holes in the field.

At this point, the Yankees, Rangers, Dodgers, Giants, Blue Jays, White Sox, Cubs, Tigers, Astros and Mariners have been connected to Marcus Semien. One-third of the league. Immense market.

Don't be surprised if Marcus Semien's contract increases in number of years and $$$. Out of the top 5 shortstops available, his estimated dollars and years are much less eye-popping than the others.
