Tigers 2021-2022 Free Agents Trades Rule 5 Arbitration Moves

https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2226571
MLB's minimum wage has fallen behind. Players ought to fight to lift it up.
The Score

Players union disappointment stems from no change from where MLB was on the luxury tax (thresholds or penalties), free agency or revenue sharing. They also prefer to see a greater increase in minimum player salary than MLB has offered. A?s said dudes remain far apart.
This shouldn't be a surprise. This is all about brinksmanship and little will happen until there's a real threat that spring training and the start of the season will be delayed. That timeline is the only motivation to get something done.

MLB remans dead set against lowering free agency from 6 years to 5. Part of the concern stems from the history of the big stars jumping from smaller markets to big markets when they hit free agency and belief this would hurt competitive balance.
And if you are rebuilding like the Detroit Tigers, shortening the timeline also shortens the window of contention when you are trying to develop your young players into experienced ones.

Until owners and players develop and ratify a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), baseball is on pause for the moment. No moves or even conversations between the 2 sides about trades or signings can take place.

But at some point, the Tigers need to finish polishing their roster. They?ve done a lot this off-season and are considered by most analysts to have had one of MLB?s best off-seasons so far.

They have unfinished business that needs addressing before Opening Day. There are still holes in the roster that need to be filled. This, despite the fact that the team will see the arrival of Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene at some point this year.

In the meantime, the biggest concerns involve pitching, defense (sub-par defensive metrics in the outfield) and the lack of a real offensive bat for the 3 or 4 lineup slot. All 3 areas could stand some improvement. Which of the following needs do you believe will help create the biggest improvement for the team?

Which acquisition will contribute the most to improving the team's record?

1. Veteran starting pitcher.

2. Solid defensive outfielder.

3. Established offensive hitter.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

MLB?s owners and players are currently discussing a number of issues as they negotiate a new CBA.
One is the adopting of the universal DH rule in the NL. This would mean no more boring at-bats by pitchers and the potential for them to get injured at the plate.

Another is the suggestion of a minimum and maximum payroll budget that would prevent teams from putting a non-competitive product on the field and keeping the financial ? and thus competitive ? gap from widening.

The last involves removing the incentives for tanking by revamping the draft order and taking away the financial rewards teams receive for being bad.

If you could select only one, which of these 3 would you like to see implemented?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

Which change to the CBA would you most like to see implemented?

1. Universal DH.

2. Minimum/maximum payroll limits.

3. Remove tanking incentives.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic. For this blog only, a maximum of 6 sentences please.

One of the biggest subjects surrounding the new CBA is the issue of when players should be appropriately paid for their performance.

Currently, a team has complete control over a player for their first 6 (and often 7 years if they manipulate the service time clock) years. For some players, not accepting a multi-year contract from the team has resulted in punishment for the player, who ends up being kept in the minors and extending the time his organization over him beyond 6 years.

These years of team-control are often a player?s best and most productive years. And during this time, they are earning minimal salary.

This rule usually takes a player to their late 20?s and sometimes to their early 30?s before hitting free agency. At that time, many athletes have already hit their peak performance and thus become less valuable in free agency.

Over the past 5 years, what this timing has done is to reduce or eliminate the desirability of the average 30+ year old players. An increasing number of them are finding it harder to get another contract. And if they do, it is much shorter in length and less in pay than it was 5 years ago.

As a result, player salaries on average have gone down each year since 2017. Top players, with multi-year expensive contracts, make up approximately 8% of MLB?s contracts.

The current system highly favors owners who receive maximum talent for minimal pay.

The end result is that baseball is increasingly made up of both young players who are inexpensive and superstar athletes. Those in the middle who are older and solid players are increasingly being spurned.

A suggested new proposal has players reaching free agency earlier in their careers. Maybe as much as 1- 2 years earlier when they are still in their late 20?s. This would allow them to earn better contracts that are commensurate with their performance before reaching 30 when they are often being phased out from playing.

The downside of this option is that the younger athletes would probably spend fewer years with their original team before leaving.

Which side would you pick?

We?re making this hard today. No fence-straddling on this one. One vote and 1 argument for the side you picked and why.

Are you ready?

Should MLB keep the same free agency system?

1. Yes, keep the players under team control for 6-7 years. Add another catcher.

2. No, allow players to reach free agency earlier.
