This week, the Detroit Tigers traded third base prospect Nick Quintana to the Reds for catcher Tucker Barnhart. Detroit is picking up his 1-year option for $7.5 mill.

Barnhart has won 2 Gold Gloves recently for his superb defense. He is a plus defender with double-digit defensive runs saved and the first Tiger since Pudge Rodriquez in 2008 to do that. In comparison, the 5 catchers in Detroit?s system last year cost the team 14 runs.

Barnhart is a leftie on a team that had trouble hitting RHP last year. His career slash line is .248/.324/.371/.696.

According to A. J. Hinch, he is a superb game manager with above-average pitch framing and the ability to consistently cut down base runners. He is also known for working well with pitchers and developing sound game plans.

How do you feel about this trade?

What do you think of the trade for Tucker Barnhart?

1. Love it!

2. Promising

3. Eh....

4. Disappointed

Teams have until five days after the World Series to extend a qualifying offer to their free agents. The players who receive the offer then have 10 days to decide whether or not to take it. If they reject it, they are immediately eligible to sign with another team.

Why were the Detroit Tigers so focused on adding a catcher with really strong defense? Maybe because Haase, Rogers, Greiner, Ramos and Garneau cost the team -14 Defensive Runs Saved. Last year Tucker Barnhart and #2 Reds catcher Stephenson saved 3 runs.

Last year, Barnhart had 9 DRS. In 2019, it was 14 and it earned him his second Gold Glove. He joined Johnny Edwards and Johnny Bench as the only Reds catchers with multiple Gold Gloves.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

Baseball owners and the Players? Union are ramping up their negotiations in advance of the December 1st deadline for a new CBA. Failure to agree to a new contract by then could result in a strike or lockout.

One of the hottest issues on the table is the increased practice of tanking by organizations that allows teams to save money (and even earn a profit) and rebuild faster and cheaper. The current rules reward the losers with money and higher draft picks.

Two of the issues being floated now are requiring teams to spend at least $100 million (a soft floor) with monetary penalties for those who don?t meet the spending requirements. (Think of it as the reverse for what the luxury tax does for teams that overspend.)

Another proposal suggests changing the draft system so that losing teams not be able be to pick in the top 5 more than 2 times in a row.

Which one of these proposals do you feel will do the most to prevent tanking?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Which change to the new CBA will have the biggest impact in preventing tanking?

1. Requiring teams to spend a minimum of $100 mill (soft floor w/penalties).

2. Changing the draft process so tanking teams can?t collect top draft picks every year.

Giants will sign Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, http://MLB.com predicts.

Whoever wrote the article didn't do their homework. No team is going to put these two together. They are oil and water. Way too much history that wouldn't make this an ideal reunion.

There were issues when they were together in Detroit. JV getting the Opening Day start after Max won the Cy Young for example. And there there was the mess with trying to re-sign Max. Reports that one reason he left was to get out from JV's shadow.

While JV has been diplomatic in his comments, Max hasn't, especially when it came to the juiced balls controversy.

For those confused:

The deadline for qualifying offers has officially passed. Players that received one now have 10 days to decide.

The quiet period is also now over. All free-agents may now talk to other teams.

Based on spotrac Tigers current payroll is at $82.35M.
Lets subtract:
Boyd 7.5M
Goodrum 3.0M
Garneau 1.5M
Greiner 850K

Total 12.8M
actual DET payroll 69.5M
Predicted 2022 budget 115M

45M to spend.

And this is why the Astros made him a QO yesterday.
Free agent Justin Verlander has reached 95-96 mph in recent bullpen sessions, as Harold Reynolds said this morning on MLBNetwork.
Verlander, who turns 39 before next season, has said he wants to pitch until age 45.
