Tigers 2022 Off Season for FA signings, trades, tender, nontender, Rule 5, to 2023

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

There is a new man in charge at Comerica and fans are desperately trying to learn as much about him as they can.

Ironically, after years of screaming at Al Avila to shut up and not broadcast his every thought, we?re now frustrated that Scott Harris plays everything close to his vest and gives us as few hints as possible.

How tight with info is he? I?m learning that there are hires he made weeks ago and people are only finding out now because someone inside leaked the info.

So what?s an anxious Tigers fan to do? What can we do to gain some idea about how well ? or not ? he is doing once the year starts?

I?ve got my first yardstick.

I?m going to be following the progress of 5 key players. Two of them trying to resuscitate their careers. Another two who were top draft choices but so far have shown poor to middlin? promise. And another prospect who was acquired in Harris? first trade.

It was a tough selection process. There are a lot of players we need to be following. A lot of young pitching, for example. An expensive, but problematic SS who is here for the long haul. And of course, the prominent holes at C, 1B and 3B.

But the 5 I?ve picked are significant markers for how well this new regime is performing.

And that?s because historically, the Tigers have never been able to give new life to pitchers (as the Astros did for JV).

Nor have they developed a top prospect to go on to remarkable success in over a decade.

And the last person to make a remarkable trade was Dave Dombrowski ? 10 years ago.

So here are the top 5 players I will be following the most closely this year??.

LHP Zach Logue, RHP Angel De Jesus, C Mario Feliciano and INF Andy Iba?ez have cleared waivers and have been outrighted to Triple A Toledo.

Tigers have signed C Julio E. Rodriguez to a minor league contract.

The Tigers are close to getting Nick Maton, Matt Vierling and Donny Sands from the Phillies in exchange for Gregory Soto and Kody Clemens

Maton likely starts at 3B..Vierling walks and runs like a deer has plenty of upside at the plate..Sands is catching depth..if you aren't seeing a trend in Harris deals you aren't paying attention.

The days of Tigers finishing bottom 3 in baseball in BB% have ended..younger scrappier and more athletic..with tons more of that to come..I'm liking it..

If you believe in Harris and his staff..they are making deals for players who are athletic...controllable...fit their profile and have upside..you see them as bench players..I promise the FO doesn't see them as bench players..

I get PHI side of the deal..Gregory Soto is almost a twin of Jose Alvarado..in age, velocity and repetoire..they fixed Alvarodo last summer and think they can tweak Soto..

I promise they have consulted both Hinch and Fetter on dealing Soto..and there are likely follow up deals coming to fortify the BP.

Maton is the guy I expected teams to be trying to pry away from the Phillies for a while now. He has legitimate big league tools and he has defensive flexibility that includes up the middle positions. That said?

He probably play sparingly against LHPs and he murders fastballs with a problem with offspeed heavy arms. Detroit probably should give him a chance to expand from that, but ideally you really need to deploy him correctly, and if you do you will get a good pay off.

Vierling obviously is a guy that should only face lefties and needs to get the ball in the air more. That also is the problem the Tigers have on a whole, so I guess if they have a plan for their top guys they could try to apply it down to him.

Instant reaction to the Tigers trading Gregory Soto to the Phillies:

Matt Vierling and Nick Maton have interesting profiles and some upside. We?ll see if they actually become productive regulars. Can see why Scott Harris likes them.

The Athletic

Scott Harris on Matt Vierling:

"There's a ton of power and raw speed, he has a 97th percentile sprint speed in the big leagues, that's hard to find."

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris on Matt Vierling, Nick Maton and Donny Sands, acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies:

Some other trickle-down effects of the deal:

* Alex Lange is now the presumptive closer. Update your fantasy draft rankings accordingly.

* Tyler Alexander is now the only lefty in the pen, so it wouldn't be shocking if the Tigers are on the lookout for another one.

Scott Harris didn?t move the needle in a big way, but the Tigers position player group has a lot more options to work with.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

It?s a given that Tiger fans are fed up with this rebuild that has now been going on in earnest since 2017. We want to see a team becoming competitive as soon as possible.

When reading the social media platforms, you see lots of comments from fans demanding that Scott Harris start signing legitimate MLB players now. For him to pull a ?Pudge? in order to kick start the team.

But is this the right thing to do? To throw money at the surface and not at the system where everything is incubated?

Is it right to spend money now on players before knowing the potential of your current players and prospects and at what levels they may contribute?
The Tigers now have spent millions on new brains, new ideas and new systems to maximize the talent they currently own and identify better talent down the road.

Is it right to sign new expensive talent to fill slots that eventually may block young, controllable talent? To bring players on board now but then find out a year later that a top prospect could fill the position better?

But of course, the new player development system and coaches now in place will not show immediate results. It may take a couple months. It may take a season before things change.

But we are currently seeing improvement in a number of prospects. And now the program is being accelerated.

The former strategy, while possibly being immediate, is non-sustainable. It is also not guaranteed to show results either. For all the money the Tigers spent under Mr. I, it never produced a ring and resulted in a painful, decade-long teardown/rebuild.

Spending big money on a well-known free agent isn?t a guarantee. Just look at the Tigers? acquisition of Javy Baez last year. If he doesn?t improve, the team will be stuck with him for another 5 years ? through 2028.

But the new system being developed is a sustainable one.

Which leads us to the question: Are you willing to wait a year to see better play or are you willing to take the risks associated with spending on free agents to possibly see better play this year?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Which risk are you willing to take in order to see the Tigers become competitive?

1. Sign players now for a temporary fix.

2. Wait 1 year while the new plan kicks in to create a sustainable talent pipeline.

The trade is fine but it doesn't help us win more games.

Tigers 2022 BP a mostly featured Jimenez Chafin Soto Lange Vest Cisnero Foley Fulmer in leverage? only 4 of them remain .. need at least one LH sand another dependable leverage arm .. Hinch/Fetter have specialized in building BP they?ve been great at developing arms.

It?s good to see the Tigers are finally doing the hard things that involve building a team.. there?s always risk involved trading assets..it?s good to see a commitment to a process and a profile rebalancing of assets to execute the vision..keep in mind it?s only the beginning.

Unlike the previous idiot regime..the Harris FO..understands how to make a deal and what players they have interest in..rather than getting walked into a horrible deal..like say Dawel Lugo.
