Tigers 2022 Off Season for FA signings, trades, tender, nontender, Rule 5, to 2023

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

Under the Tigers? old regime, the organization focused almost all of their attention on developing pitchers, not positional players. This resulted in a lack of depth throughout the team?s minor league system, especially with infielders.

Going into the 2023 season, there are more question marks than solutions for each position.

It remains to be seen if Jake Rogers can recapture his defensive form at catcher.

It is yet unknown if Spencer Torkelson will be able to hit enough in order to keep his job at 1B.

Jonathan Schoop had the best defensive stats in all of MLB at 2B but he had a horrible year offensively. His contract runs out after the 2023 season and potentially he may be traded before that.

After the non-tender of Jeimer Candelario, there is no heir apparent at 3B.

Javy Baez has 5 more years and $117 mill on his contract at SS. Last year, he led all of MLB with the most errors as a SS.

All of this is why such a large percentage of the players acquired by the Tigers this off-season were positional players.

Several of them are catchers. Most of them have experience at 2B, 3B and SS. One or two have just a smidge of experience at 1B.

A. J. Hinch has said that there will be tryouts for almost all positions this spring. And there are multiple candidates for almost every position.

Depending upon what they see, should the team focus on working around the 2B and SS positions held by Schoop and Baez or should they focus on creating the strongest infield possible? That may mean that Schoop plays 1B and 2B while Baez potentially moves to either 2B or 3B. That is if there are new players who have strong spring trainings working 2B and/or SS.
What do you think?

Should the Tigers consider re-arranging their infield depending upon what they see during spring training?

1. Yes, even if that means moving Schoop and/or Baez.

2. No, keep Schoop and Baez at 2B and SS.

The Detroit Tigers continue to sign infielders to minor league contracts with invites to spring training. Today, Cesar Hernandez. He is traditionally a 2Ber.

The strategy may be based around both Spencer Torkelson and Jonathan Schoop. Schoop's contract ends after this year but he may be traded at the deadline. The Tigers have no one else right now who could take over that spot if Schoop were to leave.

If Tork continues to struggle at the plate this spring training, the Tigers may send him down to Toledo to work with Anthony Iopoce. If that happens, then they would move Schoop to 1B and insert Hernandez at 2B. Stay tuned....

Tigers sign infielder Cesar Hernandez to minor league deal.
The long-time MLB infielder could earn $1.5 million if he makes the major league roster.

Financial Fixations.

Great read explaining what the Tigers are doing to build a competitive team and always ready major leaguers from the minors.

from her article:

"He spent the third most of all MLB owners last year. And what did it get him?"

He may have "committed" the 3rd most by total contract value ($243M) but he certainly didn't spend the most. Even "committed" is a loose term. He already shed $6.5M off of the total (Chafin), Baez can opt out (hopefully) which could shed another $98M, and Rodriguez also has a player option next off season ($49M) but it's more likely that they trade him this season.

CI actually spent $105M on ML players last year, which is 19th.

Spent and "committed" are two very different things!

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Scott Harris continues to dig and address all of the many issues surrounding the Tigers. Some of them more visible than others.

But the problems don?t stop once the 2023 season starts. In fact, many of them will become even more glaring and increasingly in need of a fix.

There have always been stories and examples of some of the problems they?ve never been able to address properly.

Until maybe now.
And that is today?s theme.

If we exclude discussion of the roster, what problems does Scott Harris need to solve that impact the roster the most?

I?ve got my top 5.

CORPORATE CULTURE.

DEPTH.

IDENTICAL HITTERS.

INJURIES.

LEADERSHIP.

Part of the depth could have been addressed by adding some decent free agents.

I'm fine with the new guy wanting to see what he has. Give as many of these young kids a chance and see if any of them stick. Then add veterans next season. Too many holes to just add veterans this year

He can see what he has with those guys in spring training and in the minor leagues. If he finds that he has something good with the players already in the system, he has trade bait with the free agent signings. If the guys that are being "evaluated" suck, he has serviceable ML players that he signed as FA.

I don't know what a couple of you posters want with the new guy Scott Harris? He is coming into a fucking dinosaur, with the way the team was run with so many parts to update to the 21st century.

He has replaced the stiffs in the minor leagues coaching and managers, Updated player development in the minors and majors, No more 400 pound strength and conditioning Doug Teter to get them into condition when he is busy planning his own next 30 course meal,

He has brought in many moving parts to get all the info of analytics to the coaching staff here in Detroit and when was the last time we had that many coaches on a Tigers team?

Right now, none of these trades are flashy, they are adding depth with the kinds of players we have wanted for years, which is to swing within the strike zone, work the count, take walks, the only caveat we have is there are no big names. so give him time to see who shakes out along with the pitching, I am sure we will be contending by 2024 or 2025.

You have to have patience after such a fucking mess and cluster fuck from Avila and his media goons writing glowing reports about his signings and trades which most all of them sucked.
