Tigers 2023-2024 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

In less than 3 weeks, players for the Detroit Tigers will start to gather in Lakeland for spring training.

Curiously, the Tigers have yet to release a full list of invitees who will join the regulars. They have announced a few players over the past week.

There will be a lot to watch this year. So many young players who are not currently on the roster but vying for a spot. And a number of them that fans are curious to see compete against MLB-level players for the first time.

Which brings me to which 5 players I am most interested in watching. Players who could be crucial to this year?s roster ? or next year?s.

I?m also curious about getting a better insight into the new player development program. I want to see which players are progressing faster and which ones have benefited from the new coaching programs.

It?s a very tough choice. I couldn?t get my list down from 6 to 5. One player had to go ? and it was the one I feel most confident about making the roster.

Colt Keith. He seems primed to make his debut.

I had to select the 5 with the most question marks, the biggest buzz and the greatest roster need......

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

During the off-season, PoBO Scott Harris has emphasized a number of times that a team can?t have too many pitchers. And since the 2023 season ended, the Tigers have been very busy dropping and acquiring pitchers more than any other type of player.

So far, they have eliminated 21 pitchers through an opt out, DFA, free agency and trades. A few of those players have chosen to come back. Most of those leaving were on the minor league rosters.

On the other end, the Tigers have acquired 8 new pitchers. Half of them are expected to be on this year?s roster.

Harris has also said he?ll be looking for new pitchers throughout the season.

What do you believe is the single biggest reason for such a significant change in the organization?s pitching prospects?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

What is the biggest reason for such a high turnover in the Tigers' pitching?

1. The new player development system has determined they have leveled out in their development.

2. The new Front Office is placing more focus on pitchers who control the strike zone, have a higher SO ratio and keep runners off the bases.

probably neither. Last year this same blogger was talking about how Harris "broomed" a huge number of players off of the 40 man, when in actuality, it was not any more than every other year. It's probably the same with pitching. There is always a lot of turnover in the league.

Big pre-debut deal: The Detroit Tigers have locked up top prospect Colt Keith through 2032, guaranteeing him $28.6M for six years with club options worth $10M, $13M and $15M. There are another $15M or so in potential escalators. He should be Detroit?s Opening Day second baseman.

Keith will make $28,642,500 over the first six years of the deal: $2.5M in 2024, $3.5M in 2025, $4M per season from 2026-27, and $5M per season from 2028-29. The deal also includes a $2M signing bonus, $10M club option for 2030 with a $2,642,500 buyout, $13M club option for 2031 with a $1M buyout, $15M club option for 2032 with a $2M buyout, and escalators for the club option salaries. If all options are escalated and exercised, the contract would be worth $82M over nine years.

My opinion: Fantastic deal. I like the move a lot.

I like this move too. It shows that the front office is looking at the team as a small to mid tier team and will want to have players who are ready to forego the big FA signing deal and stay with the team from an early age.
Other central division teams have done this through the years and tampa among many. Build from your own home grown players and sign them to a longer than one year contract if they accept passing on big FA after the 5/6 years is up. Greene has a better chance of doing this than Torkelson imo.

MONDAY MUSINGS ? WITH A TWIST.
Totally Tigers

Every once in awhile, we like to mix things up. Like today.

If you?re a regular reader, you?ve come to expect me to share 3 smaller stories that end up having lasting impact on Mondays. But today, I?m turning the tables.

You?re in charge.

Here?s your assignment:

What 1 story ? big or small ? caught your attention over the past week? It can be about the Tigers, another team or baseball in general.

Just one exclusion for today?. Please save your comments about Colt Keith for tomorrow when we will cover the topic extensively.

And for today only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to tell us about that topic.

I agree, it's a really good deal. If he's average or below average, they only invest $28.6M over 6 years. If he's good, they get a bargain for $64M over 9 years. If he is an all star type player, they get a bargain for $82M for 9 years (contract has escalators which we hope he achieves)

First time I remember when a team would do this was Cleveland when they had Kenny Lofton. I'm surprised it hasn't happened more often. First time that Detroit's ever done this that I recall. Just seems so simple.

Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training on February 14th.
Opening Day is March 28th @ White Sox.
Opening Day at Comerica Park is April 5th vs Athletics.

As a corresponding move for INF Colt Keith being added to the 40-man roster, RHP Devin Sweet has been designated for assignment.
