DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers
A recent story involving the Mets has us looking back at an identical situation in Detroit. Ironically, for both teams, it involves the same 2 players.
Back in 2013, both Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer were starting pitchers for the Detroit Tigers. That year, JV went 13-12 with an ERA of 3.46. Max earned a Cy Young Award with 21 wins.
However, for the 2014 Opening Day, JV was given the honor of being the starting pitcher, as he had in many years previously. Max left for free agency after that year.
For 2023, both men are reunited on the same team. This time, the Mets. And the roles are now reversed.
Last year, Scherzer pitched approximately half a season. JV won the Cy Young Award.
And Manager Buck Showalter named Max as the Opening Day starter.
Are these 2 instances fair?
Being given the nod as the Opening Day starting pitcher is an honor. But how should it be rewarded?
Should it go to the guy with the best stats and/or awards received? Or should it be based upon seniority with the team and/or tradition? For the record, Scherzer had only played with the Mets for part of 1 year.
Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can continue the discussion by responding to other readers.
TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

How should the Opening Day starting pitcher be selected?
1. By previous year stats and/or awards.
2. Seniority w/the team and/or team tradition.
