Tigers 2024-2025 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Awards

QUICK HITS.
Totally Tigers

It’s the end of the year and while Detroit Tiger fans have very few updates via the media, their Front Office is working behind the scenes to make news. It just may take awhile for us to read about them.
In the meantime, as we head into our second holiday week, I’ve collected bits of news and thoughts to keep you going until that first big(gish) signing comes along.
Here’s what hit my radar recently………
She keeps talking about Bregman becoming a Tiger. I just don't see that happening.

Skubal's value right now is probably as high as any traded player in mlb history. Coming off a cy young with a couple years of control would be unprecedented imo. I honestly feel they could pull a young proven position player on the verge of all star status and 2-3 top 50 prospects at a minimum.

If we aren't planning on adding 100m per year to the salary then trading Skubal is the only thing that makes sense.

I fully expect this team to take a step back as far as their record goes. I wouldn't be surprised if the are sellers again at the trade deadline.
Maybe but we made it last season and even won a series. I'm pumped. Regardless what eventually happens I'm looking forward to the season. Most in maybe a long time.

I'm looking forward to the season as well. I am hoping for another season where they are competing for a playoff spot. I just feel that they overachieved a bit at the end of last season. I'm not impressed with the Cobb or Torres signings. I don't mind the money and the short contracts...they both make sense. It's adding the one 2B in the entire league that is worse defensively than Keith, and adding a 37 year old starting pitcher coming off TJ and kind of sucked last year. They have an entire year to prove me wrong...and I hope they do!

They basically talked Cobb out of retirement with the $15 mill offer. I didn't like that. I don't mind Torres. I think in the end he'll improve the offense. Torres instead of Tork. But another guy who should probably be DH'ing.

Tigers Rumors: Yankees emerge as trade candidate after Gleyber Torres signing.
Of all the Tigers trade proposals, this is certainly one of them. No thanks.

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY.
Totally Tigers

Just before the New Year, the Detroit Tigers signed Gleyber Torres to a 1-year contract. He will play 2B for the Tigers, replacing Colt Keith who will move to 1B. At this time, it remains unclear what will happen to Spencer Torkelson.

The purpose of the signing is multifold:
Torres is a stopgap solution until 1 or more top prospects are promoted. He will not block anyone.
It is believed that Keith may be stronger defensively at 1B. As well, switching to 1B may protect his previously-injured arm to a greater extent.
After last season’s tryout for Keith, Jung and Sweeney, the Tigers may be shifting players to stronger positions, putting the first pieces into play allowing new prospects to slide more efficiently into their positions when they are promoted to Detroit.
Other than Javy Baez, Torres is the only infield veteran. Potentially, replacing a veteran with another would allow the Tigers to release Baez while promoting Trey Sweeney, a rookie. Teams cannot have an all-rookie infield (or outfield).
Torres hits Comerica park extremely well. In 2024, he hit over 1.000 OPS and had 5 HRs in 15 games.

Currently, the only downside seen is that Torres is weak defensively. Both he and Colt Keith ranked at the bottom of DRS in 2024.
However, replacing Baez with Sweeney would insert a plus defender at SS and offer Keith a chance to improve his defense at 1B. Up the middle, Jake Rogers ranks as 1 of the top defenders at C. Parker Meadows is also a solid plus defender which would put plus defenders at 3 of the 4 positions.
What do you think of this signing?

What do you think about the signing of Gleyber Torres?

1. Great move!

2. Looks promising in theory.

3. Still scratching my head.

4. Disappointing move.

I was torn between 3 & 4. I chose 3. Now, they still have a bad defensive 2B, and a guy that is bad defensively, playing a brand new position. (n)
