Tigers 2024-2025 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Awards

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers just participated in the International Draft and selected 6 players. This is the first year that Detroit has seriously involved itself in signing international players after brooming and rebuilding the departments involved. The new program is overseen by Rob Metzler who came from the Tampa Bay Rays.
They signed Cris Rodriguez who is the #4 international prospect as well as another player hitting the top 100 prospect list.
Rodriguez will turn 17 in a couple weeks. It could be at least 4 years before he would make his debut in Detroit.
The Tigers have completely rebuilt their player development program and are turning out some impressive talent. Their farm system continues to maintain a top ranking from #1 to #3 depending upon the group doing the evaluation.
However, the international players signed are so very young and the wait for them to develop is longer than the regular MLB Draft. During their minor league time, so many things about them can change.

How do you feel about the new players coming into the Tigers’ system?
How do you feel about the Tigers' International Draft results?

1. Excited about the future w/Rodriguez and Jose Ramirez (#54 ranked).

2. Wake me when they hit AA.

3. Not thrilled with the International Draft.

Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki picks the Dodgers. The rich get richer.

this is really disappointing. I was hoping that the guy would have picked some other team since it "wasn't about money". This is the last thing the Dodgers need...a young controlable pitcher that cost them virtually nothing.

This was a no brainer. Almost guarantee they knew months ago and the interviews, narrowing of time was just all BS. He was always going to the west, they always do - and LA was always tops. I never say this about players but I hope he completely blows.

I understand why they would want to play on the west coast. I was just hoping it wouldn't be the Dodgers.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have a starting pitcher dilemma to solve.
It is an almost certainty that they will lose Tarik Skubal after the 2026 season (2 years). They have tried to extend him but his agent, Scott Boras, said the team wasn’t even close in their offer. Boras takes almost 100% of his clients to free agency.
This means that the Tigers will most likely need to trade him next winter while there is still trade value. They remember when the 2014 Front Office kept Max Scherzer until he became a free agent and got Christin Stewart as their draft pick for losing him.
But the Tigers can’t take a step backward in their competitive level and certainly don’t want to risk not reaching the playoffs.
After the 2025 season, they lose both Kenta Maeda and Alex Cobb, leaving young inexperienced pitchers to fill the void. We can assume that Reese Olson will be a solid part of the rotation but who else?
Casey Mize? Keider Montero?
Jackson Jobe is expected to be a top SP but will he make this year’s roster out of spring training? If he does, that means the Tigers will potentially only have 2 sure bets on the mound when Skubal becomes a free agent in 2 years.
They do have quite a few resources in the minors who saw a brief glimpse of Detroit in 2024. But this team needs to put together a rotation with some solid experience in less than 2 years if they want to take that next step.
They have 2 options:
Spend the majority of this year (until early August at least) working with the expected rotation of Skubal, Cobb, Olson, Mize and presumably Montero. Potentially even Maeda depending how well he trains this winter.
Start bringing up the youth before the summer trade deadline so they can gain the necessary experience: Jobe, Brieske and Hanifee. (A. J. Hinch said there’s a chance Brieske gets moved back to SP.) Maybe others. Between ’25 and ’26, they could have a total of a full year of MLB experience by the time Skubal departs.
What would you do?

What should the Tigers do about their starting rotation this seaon?

1. Keep the experienced pitchers together for most of the year.

2. Start replacing some experienced pitchers mid-summer with rookies so they may gain experience.

what a dumb article. That's like asking a beautiful woman on a date, she says no, and you say that you didn't really want to date her anyway, and you are glad you didn't "waste your time" :)

I think you just see how things play out. There will be injuries, poor performers, etc. When that happens, bring up young guys.

I’m of the opinion that mcbtb puts stories like this out there so they have something on their site every day. Like I mentioned a while ago I post everything I can find on our Tigers.

If he won't sign, Skubal, trade him. I would hate to lose him for nothing. He's as high as ever for a trade.
