Tigers 2024-2025 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Awards

Teams have a hard time dumping $25 million players. Platoons aren't so bad but Sweeney, in little time, seems to be able to hit LHP.
Baez projected 2025 numbers: (OFF: Offensive Runs Above Average; DEF Defensive Runs Above Average. Dismal. CI won't part with him, though, IMO.
BA. OBP Slugging wOBA wRC+ OFF. DEF. WAR
.235.278.375.28384-5.2-0.50.4

I'm not saying I want him. Just saying teams don't like to dump big contracts. Those are facts, it rarely happens. He's under contract until '27 is over so its money.

I'm only pointing out the cost of keeping him. I think that the Tigers would be better off paying him not to play. Or trading him and agreeing to pay some of his salary. Platooning a guy who makes $25,000,000 is an insult to Baez, Sweeney, you, me, Ed Brinkman, Tom Veryzer, Deivi Cruz, Dick McAuliffe, and Ken Szotkiewicz.

Actually I don't think Deivi Cruz would be offended. In reality though its not our money. I wanted them to get rid of lots of guys over the years. They don't seem to listen to me.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

Earlier this week, Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott Harris met briefly with the press, answering questions about payroll, a Tarik Skubal contract extension, Alex Bregman and Javier Baez.
Tiger fans were not thrilled. In fact, many read the comments as less than inspiring.
But Harris plays his cards close to the vest. He doesn’t give anything away. Even when he knows that fans really want to know the details on some of the team’s hottest issues.

For the record, he answered no questions about Skubal’s contract extension. Boras injected his own opinion. Nor did Scott explain why the Tigers are not pursuing (at the moment) Alex Bregman. As for Baez, he outlined what the Tigers need to see from him while adding qualifiers for what may happen at SS.
In the business world, it is said that the more you talk, the more leverage you lose. Identifying anything about your strategy gives others an advantage.

Harris’ predecessor, Al Avila, had problems keeping his mouth shut. And the results were reflected in his struggles to trade and sign free agents. Dave Dombrowski was very similar to Harris in keeping everything secret until transactions became official. He usually surprised us with moves no fans saw coming.

So how do you feel about Harris’ method of communicating?
How do you feel about Scott Harris' style of communication?

1. I understand and support the need for a lack of details.

2. He needs to give fans more details.

3. I miss Al Avila.

The Detroit Tigers may be looking for a longer-term (3+ years) free agent this off-season. But what type of a commitment should they make?
In general, the higher the profile of the free agent, the longer and more expensive contract he will want. They always favor the number of years over the yearly salary.
The starting point for a top 20 free agent contract is 6 years. For a top 10 player, contracts start at 8 years. There are currently 30 players in MLB under contract for 10 years or more.
Once that contract is given, it becomes extremely hard to trade that player down the road as the team falls out of contention or as the player ages.
The Tigers have certainly had their share of long, expensive contracts that included Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander. Currently, Javier Baez just completed one-half of his 6-year contract with the Tigers. They are paying him $140 mill and it will end in 3 years when he is 35 years old.
Even with the signing of Miguel Cabrera, none of these contracts aged well in the end for the Tigers.

So should the Tigers once again get serious about the top free agents? Is it too soon to determine where their greatest need is considering all of the talent in their farm system who are getting close to their MLB debuts?
There are lots of factors to consider:
position and age of player (when contract ends)
blocking of top young talent who may have to be traded away as a result
significant financial gap between free agent’s contract and current top talent (ex.: Tarik Skubal, expected to earn $8 mill in 2025) that may create friction
long multi-year commitment
timing with the ripening of the roster for serious contention

So if the Tigers want to sign this type of free agent, who should they target? We’ve got 3 options for you to choose in the following poll.
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

3 year would be my choice.

Tigers offseason trade targets: Brent Rooker would be a big boost to the offense.
Free agency looks like a tough market to shop in for hitters once again. So let’s look at alternate paths, starting with the A’s slugger.
