Tigers 2024-2025 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Awards

Scott Harris said the Tigers are still looking for position player and bullpen upgrades this offseason.Harris: "We're not done. We're going to try to find new ways to make this team better. There are a number of ways we can do it — free agency, trade, waiver claims."

so signing Keith to be your long term 2B and move him to 1B after only one year is a win? Spending $15M on a stopgap 2B that is just as bad defensively as the guy you removed from 2B because his D sucks, is a win? I just read that the TB Rays signed that gold glove SS/2B Kim to a 2 year deal for $29M. He is recovering from an injury and will likely be delayed until May, but that sure sounds like a better plan than Torres. There were a bunch of pitchers that signed over the winter that I liked better than Cobb. That said, I'm not paid the huge salary that Harris is getting, nor do I have the time or resources at my disposal to give you a good answer to what and who do I want...that's his job. I just think he has done a poor job this off season.
Because defense doesn't change, bad for bad. It gets Tork of the lineup, that's the win. We didn't sign Keith to be a 2B but a ML player. Weather he's at 1B, 2B or LF it doesn't really matter. You also assume Kim would come here, why? Because of Detroit, maybe our history? And you say the RP is a terrible sign because he has injury history yet you want to sign a 2B who can't play right away? And who are these pitchers that would all come here? It's fkn Detroit. I mean I don't live in Michigan anymore but where's the appeal of playing in Detroit? The whole sports town has always had trouble attracting good players, Lions-Wings-Pistons-Tigers. Either overpay, which you hate or you trade for them and they don't have a choice. Stars are not coming here, mids are not coming here. We have to get a 1 year guys or risk reward or overpay.

I tried to answer your question. Like I said, I'm not the GM and I don't have the resources that he has. All we can do is react to what he does, and I think he has done a shitty job this off season.

You keep up with this "nobody wants to come to detroit" nonsense. Where is your proof to this???

Didn't mean any offense. I just got carried away, sorry,

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Spring training begins in just 12 days. Teams have had a full 3 months to edit and add to their rosters.
Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott outlined the team’s needs at the end of the World Series:

add offensive power (team ranked #24 in MLB for 2024)
add a RH bat (with some offensive power)
add 1-2 starting pitchers

Without identifying it, he addressed the problems in the infield by changing the positional players at 1B and 2B. And by going after Alex Bregman, he acknowledged that the Tigers aren’t satisfied with their 2025 options for 3B.
The Tigers remain in the mix for Bregman, along with 2-4 other teams. But so far, they have added only 3 new players to the roster with time running out and most of their other player options coming off the board and signing with other teams.
All 3 new players are on 1-year contracts:

Alex Cobb (RHP) – pitched in only 3 games in 2024
Gleyber Torres (RHH) – .257/.330/.378/.709 and -11 DRS
Tommy Kahnle (RHR) – 2.11 ERA and 1.148 WHIP

Total payroll spent on these three is $37,750,000 mill, bringing the total 2025 starting payroll (active roster) to $103 mill. The Tigers rank #21 in payroll currently.
Detroit stated that it is their intent on returning to the playoffs in 2025. They also mentioned that they are not looking to return to last year’s pitching chaos strategy.
Harris has emphasized that the club will not block the young guys from playing however the unexpected playoff appearance has changed their direction to some degree. And hanging over the Front Office is the expectation that they will have Tarik Skubal for a maximum of 2 more years before he becomes a free agent.
At this point, how would you grade the Tigers’ Front Office moves?
Have they done enough to improve their performance?
Have they filled their stated needs?
Were you expecting more changes or additions to be made? Or do you believe that being cautious about additions is the best way forward?
Are you happy with how they progressed last year and hope it continues in 2025 with just a tweaking?
Or are you cutting them a little slack because of their youth and prospects expected to make their debuts?
Today, we’re asking you to grade the off-season moves based upon what the Tigers have now. And because it’s Friday, we’ve got 5 grades from which to choose.

What grade would you give the Tigers for their off-season roster moves?

I voted D, although there is still time to get it to a C. I don't see any way possible to get it to a B or above.

Guys, Ilitch ain't never not gonna spend no more money on this team. I'm still shocked he splurged on Baez, but that was the final object lesson. And that "lightning in a bottle" streak of last season, demonstrates that you can win 86 games and get into the post season without breaking the bank. It's been that way for years now, so I speculate that CI won't sign big-name FAs in any event. Also, there's a record of teams that win 100 games failing in the post season as well.

I kinda see it from CI's viewpoint for the first time. I just wish he'd come out and say so.
