Tigers 2024-2025 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Awards

Jack Flaherty Returns to Detroit on Two-Year Deal.
Fangraphs

This really took me by surprise, we have been getting trolled by "Flaherty returning to the tigers" fake news stories for months. Figured he was from LA, & he would want to stay there. He just won a 'ship with them, and LA seems to have unlimited funding to sign everyone and anyone. Must be a story behind this. But oh well, if he pitches like he did last year, this rotation just got better.

"There were no desperate early deals that we saw with Al Avila who was usually the first GM each year to start signing players. In almost every deal he made, the Tigers grossly overpaid."

Alex Cobb???

Days of Roar Tigers Podcast: Can Detroit Tigers contend for 2025 World Series if Alex Bregman signs? 63 minutes.

The countdown is on: Detroit Tigers pitchers and catchers report in nine days to spring training in Lakeland, Florida. This past week, the Tigers signed starting pitcher Jack Flaherty to a two-year, $35 million contract and relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle to a one-year, $7.75 million contract, but third baseman Alex Bregman remains a free agent. The Tigers are still interested in signing Bregman, even after signing Flaherty, but what are the odds the Tigers will land him? After Bregman talk, Evan and Mark discuss the player they're most excited to watch throughout spring training. Evan selected a player who needs to hit for more power; Mark selected a potential MVP candidate.
For our guest, LaMond Pope — the Chicago White Sox beat writer for the Chicago Tribune — joins "Days of Roar" to explain the latest happenings on the South Side, from covering the worst team in modern MLB history last season to a new manager in Will Venable this season. Pope also discusses the Garrett Crochet trade, several big-name prospects in the White Sox farm system and the general direction of the organization under general manager Chris Getz.
To wrap up, Evan and Mark talk more about Jack Flaherty signing with the Tigers.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

Several days ago, the Detroit Tigers signed Jack Flaherty to a 2-year contract. He can opt out after the 2025 season.
This now changes the dynamics of the starting rotation and leaves only 1 slot open. The starting rotation will be Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Alex Cobb and Reese Olson.
For the remaining spot, there are almost a dozen pitchers who will be competing but only a handful who have the best chances of earning that last slot.
These players have the best chance:
JACKSON JOBE – He has only pitched 4 innings so far at the MLB level. Will the Tigers be hesitant to throw him in too early given what happened to Spencer Torkelson when he was promoted prematurely?
KENTA MAEDA – His salary will earn him every chance to have a come back year after his winter routine was overhauled by Chris Fetter and Robin Lund.
MATT MANNING – He started 5 games last year before being sent down for the rest of the season. A. J. Hinch said there were a number of things he needed to address.
CASEY MIZE – He missed 2 full years due to arm and back surgeries. He did not pitch well last year and was left off the playoff roster. He had the rotation’s highest WHIP and the Tigers rescinded their team option on his 2025 salary.
KEIDER MONTERO – In his first year at the MLB level, his stats matched or exceeded Casey Mize’s. He threw a complete game shut-out and throws 95 MPH, however there are issues with control at times.
Who would be the best starting pitcher to get the nod?

Which pitcher would be the best choice for filling the final spot in the rotation?

1. Jackson Jobe

2. Kenta Maeda

3. Matt Manning

4. Casey Mize

5. Keider Montero

I was shocked that Jobe got 66% of the votes. I certainly think that he will be up at some point next year, but to fill out the rotation, my preference would be whoever has the best spring out of Mize, Maeda, or Montero

We will see which pitcher has the best spring and go with him. Most fans are not excited at having maeda, mize, or montero, as the 5th pitcher in the rotation as they are about Jobe.

I hear ya. I would still rather have him start slowly in FL, then maybe Toledo. He will be on an innings limit, so if you are serious about thinking that you are a contender, and you feel Jobe is the real deal, I would think you would want to "save" him so he would be available at the end of the season.

Talking about Jobe on an innings limit, makes sense, and also Olson and Cobb will probably be on innings pitched limits, which makes me wonder how many of these pitchers in the list with Jobe will wind up pitching as starters. I think Hinch Fetter and Lund will mix and match to perfection like last year when that time comes. This Fetter might be the best PC they have had since Johnny Sain with the 68 Tigers for getting the best out of each pitcher.

Olson pitched about 150 innings in 2023. I know he got hurt last year, but I would expect that he should be good for 160 or so this year.

I don't expect that they will limit Cobb. One year deal and he came back from injury last year. At age 37, I would use him up as long as he is effective.

I am crossing my fingers that Mize or Maeda come to spring training and really impress. That gives the two young guys (Jobe and Montero) a chance to pitch in FL then in Toledo.

Looking forward to spring!!!
