Tigers close to signing Rajai Davis

Ever think of just stating that instead? Or even private messaging me?

Most of the time it is a "discussion" between myself and another poster.

Fair enough, and I apologize for airing that in the thread instead of a PM. I do think you are a very good poster, so please don't take my simple critique as a personal attack. Everybody is entitled to their opinion here, and opinions are always going to vary greatly regardless of the data behind them. All I'm trying to say is that you're gonna drive yourself and everybody else here crazy if you make it your life's mission to try to convert everybody else over to your side.

Also, what the heck does bookmarking a thread to revisit later do for anybody? Are you gonna feel vindicated if your opinion plays out as fact? What's the timeline for that anyhow? Are future generations going to come to these message boards and say, "Wow, that Rebbiv guy sure was smart when he said that Rajai Davis was a bad signing."? I couldn't care less if my opinions on sports hold true in time because they really don't matter to me that much. There are bigger and more important things in life than this stuff.

Regardless of the PT Davis gets, I can't wait until you guys see how bad his defense is. It's mind blowing how bad he misplays fly balls off the bat. It's comical.

Tom basically said I was jumping the gun for disliking this move. If that is the case, the bookmark it and show me later where I was jumping the gun.

We trade Fister to "free up" $7 Mil and then give Davis $5 Mil to play in 30% of the games. I know he is fast and hits lefties well. But everything else does not fit this team.

Got it, and I can't disagree with you in that regard, Rebbiv. I really didn't like the Fister trade, but it's done and over with. I just hope that time proves it to be a good deal for us like the Granderson trade ultimately was. I don't recall anybody drooling over Scherzer coming here in that trade, so maybe one of these guys we got back turns into a stud for us. In all honesty, that trade may not be able to be accurately gauged for 3-5yrs, so getting too upset about it now is probably a bit premature.

Just for the record, I don't see where the Granderson/E. Jackson trade was significantly better for DET. But that would have to be for another thread.

I'm not a big fan of this move either. They must really think Dirks is going to have a bounce back year I suppose.

The only thing I'm hopeful for is if the Tigers can somehow make the playoffs (not so sure about that anymore), then Davis can be a great asset in a playoff series. Maybe we don't lose all those 1-0 games anymore if we can get a pinch runner in there late in the game. If his defense is as bad as everyone as saying, I don't like the move even more.

Which is why he averages less than 2.5 errors per season.

You said you didn't like the signing before you knew how much they signed him for, how long of a contract and in what capacity they are going to utilize him....that was what I meant by jumping the gun. He may suck but if he is used as a platoon OF, produces vs. LH like he has over the past 3 seasons plus a great pinch runner it might work out fine.

Dirks Defensive value via Fangraphs in 2013? +5.3 runs. Davis? -6.

Davis doesn't get an error when he doesn't even get to a ball when he ran left instead of running right. Yes, it's that bad.

He's a good 4th OF, maybe one of the best in MLB because of he crushes lefties and has speed on the bases. But don't kid yourself into thinking he has good or even average defense.

I'm glad someone else responded to that post about the errors, I was trying REALLY hard not to be a dick.

but I was about at the end of my rope.

I just logged on, if it was 8 hours later in the day I'd be in the same boat as you.

I like the data you provide here, and generally find/found your posts to be good, but you have become a real Debbie Downer and thread killer lately. You don't just state your opinion and move on, you restate it again, and again, and again... page after page. We get it, you hate the move, and you have legitimate reasons why. Simply seeing you say the same thing over and over is what I was criticizing.

I agree 100%. This guy is all about rooting against the team and the to try and prove his point and make himself look good and DD and Detroit Fans look bad, He will do what ever it takes over any stupid little thing you say.

Example - He POSTS A SCOUTING REPORT SAYING Lombardozzi has Average/ Above average speed.

I used his last minor league season when he was a full time player in 2011 as an example.

I was using SB's/Runs categories only. Posted where this would rank in the 2013 season.

Ellsbury R/SB 92/52
Andrus 91/42
Trout 109/33
Kipnis 86/30
Lombarzozzi 86/30

I put the stop watch to Lombardozzi going from 1st to 2nd stealing a base 3.57 seconds. Proving he has above average speed from a dead stop. Next thing I know Thumb( who I think is Rebbiv's 2nd I.D. USING A SMART PHONE WITH A DIFFERENT I.P. ADDRESS) jumps in with a formula from Fan graphs Than includes Triples I never said one time the guy hits triples. So using this formula is not fair. I was using Lombo's 2011 season, u used a season where he pinch hit 47 games and only had a half season worth the AB'S. All I was trying to say is the guy can steal bases and score runs and has above average speed and that is all.

Stolen Base Percentage = (((SB + 3)/(SB + CS + 7)) – .4) x 20

Frequency of Attempts = Square root of ((SB + CS)/(1B + BB)) / .07

Percentage of Triples = 3B/(AB-HR-SO) and then put on a scale based on this chart:

< .001 = 0
.001 - .00231 = 1
.00231 - .00392 = 2
.00392 - .00583 = 3
.00583 - .00804 = 4
.00804 - .01055 = 5
.01055 - .0136 = 6
.0136 - .01587 = 7
.01587 - .01898 = 8
.01898 - .02239 = 9
> .02239 = 10

Runs Scored Percentage = (((R – HR)/(H + BB – HR)) – .1) / .04

Then anything one of the components that is below 0 you make 0, anything about 10 you make 10. Then take the mean of the 4 components

If that's really what you think I have to seriously LOL at you. Me and Rebbiv have had our differences of opinion plenty of times.

Also can you link me to a post where I jumped in with an article from FanGraphs? Because I think you have your facts pretty messed up.
