Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

Tigers hire former Cubs hitting coach Anthony Iapoce as Triple-A Toledo manager, per multiple sources. The agreement has been in place since at least early December.
Maybe Harris signed a 3B back in November and just hasn't told us yet.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

There is a new man in charge at Comerica and fans are desperately trying to learn as much about him as they can.

Ironically, after years of screaming at Al Avila to shut up and not broadcast his every thought, we?re now frustrated that Scott Harris plays everything close to his vest and gives us as few hints as possible.

How tight with info is he? I?m learning that there are hires he made weeks ago and people are only finding out now because someone inside leaked the info.

So what?s an anxious Tigers fan to do? What can we do to gain some idea about how well ? or not ? he is doing once the year starts?

I?ve got my first yardstick.

I?m going to be following the progress of 5 key players. Two of them trying to resuscitate their careers. Another two who were top draft choices but so far have shown poor to middlin? promise. And another prospect who was acquired in Harris? first trade.

It was a tough selection process. There are a lot of players we need to be following. A lot of young pitching, for example. An expensive, but problematic SS who is here for the long haul. And of course, the prominent holes at C, 1B and 3B.

But the 5 I?ve picked are significant markers for how well this new regime is performing.

And that?s because historically, the Tigers have never been able to give new life to pitchers (as the Astros did for JV).

Nor have they developed a top prospect to go on to remarkable success in over a decade.

And the last person to make a remarkable trade was Dave Dombrowski ? 10 years ago.

So here are the top 5 players I will be following the most closely this year??.

We are learning just how tight-lipped President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, is. Ever the diplomat, he is loathe to criticize or reveal negative information about former executives and current players. While he has offered general details about the direction and action of the team, he sidesteps questions that ask for more information.

We are also learning that he has been very busy hiring but that the announcements are not made for weeks.

Harris is reminiscent of Dave Dombrowksi when he was the GM.
Al Avila, Dave?s successor, was anything but. He would regularly reveal exactly what was on his mind, what he was doing and shared details of failures and strategies for the world ? and other teams ? to hear.

Fans were upset with Avila?s desire to broadcast everything but now they are frustrated with Harris playing everything so close to the vest.
As a fan, which leader?s style do you prefer?

Which communication style do you prefer?

1. Harris ? Sharing as little as possible gives him leverage and helps make for better deals.

2. Avila ? I wanted to know as much as possible about what he was doing.

3. Neither - I guess I should be careful about what I wish for....

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

It?s a given that Tiger fans are fed up with this rebuild that has now been going on in earnest since 2017. We want to see a team becoming competitive as soon as possible.

When reading the social media platforms, you see lots of comments from fans demanding that Scott Harris start signing legitimate MLB players now. For him to pull a ?Pudge? in order to kick start the team.

But is this the right thing to do? To throw money at the surface and not at the system where everything is incubated?

Is it right to spend money now on players before knowing the potential of your current players and prospects and at what levels they may contribute?
The Tigers now have spent millions on new brains, new ideas and new systems to maximize the talent they currently own and identify better talent down the road.

Is it right to sign new expensive talent to fill slots that eventually may block young, controllable talent? To bring players on board now but then find out a year later that a top prospect could fill the position better?

But of course, the new player development system and coaches now in place will not show immediate results. It may take a couple months. It may take a season before things change.

But we are currently seeing improvement in a number of prospects. And now the program is being accelerated.

The former strategy, while possibly being immediate, is non-sustainable. It is also not guaranteed to show results either. For all the money the Tigers spent under Mr. I, it never produced a ring and resulted in a painful, decade-long teardown/rebuild.

Spending big money on a well-known free agent isn?t a guarantee. Just look at the Tigers? acquisition of Javy Baez last year. If he doesn?t improve, the team will be stuck with him for another 5 years ? through 2028.

But the new system being developed is a sustainable one.

Which leads us to the question: Are you willing to wait a year to see better play or are you willing to take the risks associated with spending on free agents to possibly see better play this year?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Which risk are you willing to take in order to see the Tigers become competitive?

1. Sign players now for a temporary fix.

2. Wait 1 year while the new plan kicks in to create a sustainable talent pipeline.

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Throughout the week, there are so many smaller stories hitting the media. They may be bite-size, but often they are just as important as the headline-grabbing news. Sometimes, even more.

And that?s what brings me to today. A way to bring them out in the open and invite conversation about some of these subjects.

And that?s the plan for Mondays. Keeping track of these mighty little bits that hit my radar throughout the week and sharing them with you today because
I know one or more will also resonate with you. So, let?s kick off this week?s musings?

PoBO Scott Harris certainly inherited a mess from his predecessor. Despite former GM Al Avila?s comments about the rebuild being over, and getting Chris Ilitch to spend $235 mill on the roster last year, the team regressed in almost every facet but pitching.

Harris? job is to right the ship and even he has said this will be a process. There are no quick fixes. It?s premature to say that the Tigers are undergoing another rebuild. It?s more likely that this year is focused on reassessment.

Given all of this, Harris is dramatically remaking the roster. No exciting moves but an effort to remake as much of the roster instead of focusing in on just a couple areas.

The Tigers cut 16 players and only 2 of them have found new homes in MLB. The rest are either unsigned or have received new minor league contracts. It is a telling statement about the low level of talent this organization had last year.

As far as trade chips, Detroit has few and they are all pitchers. So far, 2 relievers have left in exchange for multiple players and top prospects.

Which brings us to the only other logical trade piece.

Eduardo Rodriguez.

He started only 17 games last year and missed almost 2 months from an undisclosed family emergency while ghosting his team the entire time. He had the team?s best record as a starter at 5-5 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.

E-Rod was signed to a 5-year contract for $77 mill. His salary for 2023 is now considered to be a very reasonable $14 mill that goes up to $18 mill/year in 2024.

Rodriguez has an opt-out after the 2023 season.

Should the Tigers hang onto him or should they take advantage of the inflated market for starting pitchers and try to trade him? Conceivably, they could get a multi-player haul in return.

Or do they need his experience and depth as a starter for a team that used 17 different SPs last year?

Should the Tigers trade Eduardo Rodriguez?

1. Yes

2. No
