SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have expanded their MLB level coaching staff. Like most teams, they now have a double-digit number of coaches reporting to the manager. It is not unusual for some teams to have 13-14 coaches.

The Tigers now have 10, an increase from last year?s total of 6. Half of this year?s coaching staff are brand new to the organization. The other 5 came in under the Hinch regime.

The Tigers have added a third coach to both pitching and hitting. All coaches have different specialties and will be working with players in different ways and focusing in on different aspects. Some coaches will be working with players on the field while others will be focused on using and translating technology/video/stats. And then a couple with kinesiology/biomechanics backgrounds who will be addressing physical movement issues. There will be no overlap in their work but each department will be coordinating with each other.

They have also added a catching coach who will work directly with catchers and be involved in helping plan game strategy.

What do you think about the expansion of coaches? Do the players need all the help they can get? Do they need to keep up with what the rest of MLB is doing? Or is this too much?

What do you think about the Tigers now having 10 coaches?

1. About time they modernized and kept up with the rest of MLB.

2. Not sure. Need to see some of the season play out.

3. Not thrilled. Prefer a smaller number of coaches.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Now that the Detroit Tigers have a new man in charge, the team is spending this year re-evaluating its talent both at the major and minor league levels. Over the past couple years, the ranking of top prospects and the farm system have been falling.

Scott Harris has signed and invited several dozen new players to audition for every slot on the team. Excluding the outfield, there will be 5-9 players trying out for every infield position.

He has also stated that it?s important to give young players more time to play and get at-bats. It?s because there is a lot of talent that needs fresh eyes to re-assess it.

It would also mean that more experienced players will get less playing time.

But what is more important? Playing more experienced players for potentially a better record or taking this year to properly re-evaluate the younger players and see how they fit into the team?s future? Deciding which holes could be filled from inside that will also determine who to draft and which free agents to sign going forward?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Should the Tigers priority for the year be wins or assessing/developing talent for next year?

1. Focus on getting the best record possible.

2. Focus on assessing/developing talent.

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Throughout the week, there are so many smaller stories hitting the media. They may be bite-size, but often they are just as important as the headline-grabbing news. Sometimes, even more.

And that?s what brings me to today. A way to bring them out in the open and invite conversation about some of these subjects.

And that?s the plan for Mondays. Keeping track of these mighty little bits that hit my radar throughout the week and sharing them with you today because
I know one or more will also resonate with you. So, let?s kick off this week?s musings?

You don?t have to watch Ryan Garko in action to understand that there is a whopping difference in how he runs Player Development compared to his predecessor.

You never read any interviews with Dave Littlefield. He didn?t give updates or explain the team?s strategy and progress. Nada.

But now we?re reading lots of interviews with Garko about what is being done in the minors. And he goes into significant detail.

Much of what he discusses is about the Tigers changing how they work with their minor league hitters. He even goes through a list of prospects and details about what they were doing previously and how skills were refined. All very intelligently explained. And the amount of detail is reassuring to fans.

Makes one wonder what Littlefield was actually doing all those years?..

A CHANGE IN STRATEGY.
Totally Tigers

There are only 2 people who have a more daunting task than Scott Harris? attempt to rebuild the Tigers.

The heads of ticket sales and marketing.

Their jobs will be the most challenging since the end of 2003 when the team lost 119 games.

What exactly do they have to sell?

Other than Riley Greene, there?s really nothing else.

There are no promising rookies coming up. The buzz surrounding Spencer Torkelson is all gone and replaced with skepticism.

Miguel Cabrera is a shadow of the man he used to be and he won?t even be playing that much. He broke records last year which held fan interest but there?s nothing other than his retirement this year.

Even Lou Whitaker?s jersey number retirement was last year.

What?s ironic is that the Tigers made a lot of significant changes since the end of last season. The problem is that none of them will sell tickets.

No one?s coming to Comerica to watch Scott Harris or Dr. Lund.

And they?re not going to be inspired by the changes to the ballpark dimensions either.

Or by seeing A. J. Hinch who is now already familiar to fans.

This is gonna be one tough sell.

Since taking over, Detroit Tigers Scott Harris has signed 2 pitchers and acquired 17 new players. He has invited 22 non-roster players to spring training - 10 pitchers and 12 positional players.

Let's keep this figures handy and see who makes the roster for Opening Day. Also, which of these players - and how many - end up in Detroit for some or all of the 2023 season.

Isn't it interesting that so many Detroit Tiger fans are directing more of their anger towards an owner who isn't spending on the roster (but spending a lot on the infrastructure) this year instead of placing the majority of the blame on the former GM who blew the rebuild?

There's certainly enough blame to go around but this team started regressing again over the past year+ under Al Avila. A farm system that now once again ranks at #30 and is described as having no depth other than pitching. And fewer prospects showing up on top 100 lists.

Consider is that this team has taken 1-2 steps backwards and is not yet ready to invest in free agents until the new Front Office digs out of the mess created by the former GM. Will adding a couple new players actually make this team better when there are so many holes to fill?

OPEN MIKE.

Rumor has it that there is another sporting event happening today and that it may take away from the discussion of baseball. God forbid.

But just in case some of you need your baseball fix, we?re here to help.

Today is your day to discuss anything baseball-related, even if it?s not directly involving the Tigers. For this day only, please limit your comments to 6 sentences or less.

If you?re not paying attention Scott Harris is remaking the Tigers from the bottom up.. there?s a plan a profile band the caliber of players being fed into the system is markedly higher.. and the depth is considerably better.

The 2023 Tigers are not a rebuild..not even close..they are..like a house flip..a redesign..taking the good and optimizing it..building a new eco system within the space..then producing useful players within that org.. or using those pieces as assets to acquire better fits.
