Tigers Hire A.J. Hinch As New Tigers Manager and New Coaches

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

As the game of baseball changes, so must the historical records. As in the beginning of the game, there has been an evolution in how America?s pastime has been played.

Today, analytics has shown that it is significantly harder to throw a complete game or no-hitter for many reasons. Players have become bigger and throw harder. There are more and different pitches. Baseballs have changed. Players train their entire lives starting as children and come into the game with much more mileage on their arms than previous generations.

But one of the most important stats is when a pitcher faces a lineup for the third time, the chances of a batter getting a hit goes up significantly. Every team now is much more likely to remove their pitcher before then.

This has cut down significantly on complete games and also singular pitcher no-hitters.

There is evidence that allowing a pitcher to throw an entire game significantly increases his chances of serious arm injury. We?ve seen it happen to a number of Tiger pitchers, including Spencer Turnbull who had Tommy John surgery shortly after throwing his no-hitter. It is appearing more and more likely that Turnbull will be missing close to 2 years.

Recently, the Tigers threw a combined no-hitter, which was only MLB?s 20th.

If you were the manager and your #1 or #2 pitcher was throwing a no-hitter, would you remove him in the 7th inning as he faced the lineup for the 3rd time and his pitch count was elevated?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

My opinions have changed over the years and the combined no-hitter that just happened was just as exciting if only 1 was involved. Maybe more exciting.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

The Detroit Tigers finished the 2023 season with 78 wins and 84 losses. They were 9 games out of 1st place, finishing in 2nd place.

However, they were also under .500 with a .481 win/loss record.

In the AL, they were the 9th best team out of 15. Overall, they were the 19th best team in all of MLB.

They won 12 more games this year than in 2022. They also lost 12 fewer games. For the month of September, they played over .500 baseball.

This was the Tigers best year since 2016 in terms of wins and losses. In the standings, this year?s finish in the standings was also the best since 2016.

In a recent Totally Tigers poll, 77% of fans believed the Tigers were a better team.

In another poll, 48% of readers believed the Tigers would finish with 85-90 losses.
In second place, 27% of fans thought the team would lose 91-95 losses.

Only 16% of fans thought the team would finish where they did. A full 75% believed the team would have a worse record at the end of this year.
So how do you feel about the Tigers? record now that the year is over? Which one of these opinions describes your feelings best?

How do you feel about the Tigers' record now that the year is over?

1. Not surprised that they performed better.

2. Very surprised that they played better this year.

3. Somewhat disappointed with the results.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

So far, we?ve addressed the Detroit Tigers? yearly performance as a whole and then graded each member of the roster.

Now, it?s time to evaluate the manager and coaches. They work as a team so it?s impossible to simply evaluate A. J. Hinch. We have to look at the entire group.

For the first time in history, the Tigers have modernized their coaching staff. While certain coaching categories have multiple members, each one brings their own focus and specialty to their work.

Joining Hinch are:
George Lombard ? bench coach who also in charge of base running, positioning, relays and signs. He also coaches in the outfield.
Keith Beauregard, Michael Bdar, James Rowson ? hitting coaches.
Chris Fetter, Robin Lund, Juan Nieves ? pitching coaches incl. kinesiology.
Alfredo Amazago ? first base coach.
Gary Jones ? third base coach.
Tim Federowicz ? catching coach.
Six of these coaches are new this year. In addition, the Tigers hired 2 new training/conditioning and performance coaches. And 2 new athletic trainers.

Overall, the team improved their performance over last year, winning 12 more games and losing 12 less. They went from finishing 4th to 2nd in the AL Central. It was the best win-loss result since 2016.

In 2022, they had no winning months. This year, 2 of them. But in both years, they started each season very slowly.

The 2023 season saw an improvement in every offensive category except for strikeouts. The team slash line was also improved and they halved their negative run differential. However, they still sit near the bottom.

The players hit 55 more HRs, 100 more RBIs and doubled their stolen bases.

In past years, the Tigers have ranked #29 or #30 in offensive stats. They have moved up but remain in the lower third of MLB.

Their defense has also improved. They now have 5 position players who are defensively strong and saved the team runs.

Pitching has also gotten stronger with the team moving from the lower third to the middle.

The Tigers have a pitcher who is in the discussion for Rookie of the Year as well as a Gold Glove finalist.

But in the end, the team again finished under .500. Another year with more losses than wins.

Given that this was the first year under new PoBO Scott Harris, combined with the priority of undoing the damage created by former GM, Al Avila, what is realistic to expect regarding how fast this team turns things around?

Were you expecting lesser results? Something similar to this year?s final standings? Or were you pleasantly surprised by what happened?

Do you see this team being stuck or are you currently seeing progression of the young players and the formation of the core of this team?
How would you grade those in charge ? A. J. Hinch and his coaching staff?

How would you grade A. J. Hinch and his coaching staff?

1. High marks

2. Decent marks.

3. Mixed reviews.

4. Disappointing marks.

Tigers first base coach Alfredo Am?zaga, others in organization won?t return in 2024.

The Tigers hired Chip Lawrence, who finished runner-up to Mark Conner for the scouting director job in October 2022, as a special assistant to scouting and global crosschecker.

The Tigers organization for the first time in a long time, maybe ever, is robust with talent in their scouting and development staff.
